Book excerpt: The purpose of the inspection was to make an assessment of the general condition of the dam with respect to safety, based upon available data and visual inspection, in order to determine if the dam poses hazards to human life or property. The inspection and evaluation indicates that the spillways do not meet the criteria set forth in the recommended guidelines for a small dam having a high hazard potential. Considering the small volume of water impounded and the large floodplain downstream one-half of the Probable Maximum Flood is the appropriate spillway design flood. The spillways will not pass the 100-year flood (flood having a one percent chance of being exceeded in any year) without overtopping the dam. The spillways will pass 7% of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam. The Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) is defined as the flood that may be expected from the most severe combination of critical meteorologic and hydrologic conditions that are reasonably possible in the region.

Book excerpt: Golden Eagle Lake Dam was inspected by an interdisciplinary team of engineers. The purpose of the inspection was to make an assessment of the general condition of the dam with respect to safety, based upon available data and visual inspection, in order to determine if the dam poses hazards to human life or property. Our inspection and evaluation indicates that the spillways do not meet the criteria set forth in the recommended guidelines for an intermediate dam having a high hazard potential. The Probable Maximum Flood is the appropriate spillway design flood. The spillways will pas the 100-year flood (flood having a one percent chance of being exceeded in any year) without overtopping the dam. The spillways will pass 29% of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping of the dam. The Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) is defined as the flood that may be expected from the most severe combination of critical meteorologic and hydrologic conditions that are reasonably possible in the region.

Book excerpt: The dam is an earthfill about 600 feet long and 33.6 feet in height located in gently rolling hills of central Missouri. All discharges at the dam site are through an uncontrolled earthen spillway at the left end of the dam. The spillway has no uniform shape and has very poor vegetative cover. Our inspection and evaluation indicates that the spillway does not meet the criteria set forth in the recommended guidelines for a small size dam having a high hazard potential. The spillway has the capacity to pass 9% of the Probable Maximum Flood without overtopping the dam.

Book excerpt: The Pierce Lake Dam, Missouri Inventory Number 30999, was inspected. This dam is classified as small due to its 37 ft height and storage capacity of 681 ac-ft. A small dam is one which is less than 40 ft in height and impounds less than 1000 ac-ft of storage. The St. Louis District, Corps of Engineers, has classified this dam high hazard; we concur with this classification. The estimated damage zone, as determined by the St. Louis District, Corps of Engineers, extends approximately five miles downstream. The community of Richwoods and several other occupied structures are located within the estimated damage zone. The inspection and evaluation indicate that the dam is in generally poor condition. Specific deficiencies that were noted are insufficient spillway capacity, very steep downstream slope, high erodibility of the embankment materials and lack of maintenance and periodic inspections. Also deemed as a deficiency is the lack of any stability or seepage analyses.

Book excerpt: Woodridge Lake Dam is situated on a small intermittant stream about 1000 feet upstream of its confluence with the intermittant Dry Fork. The main purpose of the dam is to impound water for recreational use for landowners adjacent to the dam. The following problems were observed which could affect the safety of the dam or which will require maintenance within a reasonable period of time. Deep erosion gulley along the downstream left abutment contact, and erosion gullies at the right abutment contact; Wave erosion on the upstream embankment slope; Poorly channelized exit for the emergency spillway discharges which causes ponded water at downstream toe and erosion along the left abutment contact; and Undercutting on the discharge end of the service spillway pipe, and the ponded water found downstream of this pipe.

Based on the criteria in the guidelines, the dam is in the high hazard potential classification, which means that loss of life and appreciable property loss could occur in the event of failure of the dam. The estimated damage zone extends approximately three miles downstream of the dam. Within the first two miles of the damage zone are nine dwellings, Highway NN and bridge which may be subjected to flooding, with possible damage and/or destruction, and possible loss of life. Lynch Lake Dam is in the small size classification since it is less than 40 feet high and impounds less than 1,000 acre-feet of water.

Berggreen and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The St Louis District (SLD), Corps of Engineers, has classified this dam as having a high hazard potential. The dam is classified intermediate size based on its height of about 45 to 50 feet. The downstream face is steep, on the order of 33 to 35 degrees, is constructed of cohesionless sand gravel, and could be severely eroded if overtopped. Scattered large trees up to 12 in. diameter are growing on the downstream face of the dam. The reservoir storage volume is completely filled with fine tailings and storage of water is limited to two small ponds at the upstream end of the impoundment, and shallow, intermittent ponds on the surface of the tailings. Hydraulic/hydrologic analyses indicate the dam and informal spillway will pass the 1 percent probability-of-occurrence event (100-year flood) without overtopping the embankment. These analyses further indicate the dam will be overtopped by a storm which produces greater than 55 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Based on the inspection of the Dam, it is recommended that further study be conducted without undue delay, under the guidance of an engineer experienced in the design and construction of tailings dams.
