This book was released on 1981 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of Brown's Lake Dam is based upon visual observations made at the time of inspection, hydraulic and hydrologic computations and past operational performance. The inspection and review of data of the Brown's Lake Dam did not reveal any problems which would require emergency action. The dam appears to be in good condition and adequately maintained. Brown's Lake Dam is a high hazard-small size dam. The spillway design flood (SDF) for a dam of this size and classification is 1/2 PMF to the PMF. the PMF has been selected as the spillway design flood based on downstream potential for loss of life. The spillway and reservoir are capable of controlling the spillway design flood (PMF). Based on criteria established by the Corps of Engineers, the spillway is termed adequate. The following recommendations and remedial measures should be instituted as soon as possible. (1) A regularly scheduled maintenance program should be developed and implemented. (2) A warning system should be developed to warn downstream residents of large spillway discharges or imminent failure of the dam. (3) A safety inspection program should be implemented with inspections at regular intervals by qualified personnel. (4) The drainline valve should be operated on a regular basis.

Book excerpt: Lake Walter Dam is located on Spring Run, approximately one mile upstream of its confluence with Meshoppen Creek in Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The condition of Lake Walter Dam is considered to be good. The only significant condition noted which requires further attention is the lack of erosion protection in the emergency spillway discharge channel. The swampy condition at the toe of the dam is not considered to be significant at this time; however, the condition should be monitored to document if seepage is developing.

Book excerpt: Maple Lake Dam is an earthfill embankment 14.4 feet high and 283 feet long, excluding spillway. The emergency spillway is located at the left abutment, consisting of an earth channel having a trapezoidal cross section. The bottom width of the spillway at the reservoir outlet is 56 feet. A service spillway, consisting of a 12-inch riser pipe and an 8-inch diameter outlet pipe, is located approximately 100 feet from the right abutment. The outlet works was reported to consist of an 8-inch diameter asbestos cement pipe, extending upstream of the riser pipe to the reservoir and terminating with two sections of an 8-inch diameter vitrified clay pipe, having a concrete plug at the inlet. Based on visual inspection, the Maple Lake Dam is judged to be in good condition. Under the present conditions, the spillway will pass approximately 37 percent of the PMF. Should the top of the dam be restored to its design elevation, the spillway could pass the SDF without overtopping the dam.

Book excerpt: Forest Lake Dam is located on Forest Lake Creek in Forest Lake Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The original purpose of the impounded water was for ice harvesting and recreation. Additionally, water releases from the impoundment activated a saw mill. Presently, the lake is being used for recreation. The overall appearance of the dam is poor. Location of observed deficiencies are shown on the General Plan. The profile and typical sections of the dam are presented and are based on field survey made on the day of inspection. The survey datum for this inspection is elevation 1527 feet above mean sea level which is stamped on the USGS Bench Mark (No. TT15K, 1931) on the large sandstone slab, upstream of the service spillway. On the inspection date (12/10/1980), the lake was being drawn down for the winter. The lake level was approximately at elevation 1523.6, or 2.8 feet below its normal level. Deficiencies observed during the field inspection are described. Visible features are depicted in photographs.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the inspection is to determine if the dam constitutes a hazard to human life or property. The dam consists of a homogeneous earthfill embankment that is 680 feet long and 64 feet high at its maximum section. The main spillway is a drop spillway located near the left abutment of the dam. It consists of a concrete riser connected to a 30-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe under the embankment. One 12-inch by 21-inch uncontrolled orifice is located in the upstream face of the concrete riser with the orifice crest at El. 1227.0, which is 27 feet below design elevation of the top of the dam. The auxiliary spillway is an excavated channel at the right abutment of the dam. It is grass-lined except for portions that were excavated into rock. The hazard classification is high hazard. Downstream conditions indicate that a high hazard classification is warranted for PA-468 Dam. It is owned by the Susquehanna County Commissioners. Its purpose is for flood control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshwood Dam is two homogeneous earthfill embankments with masonry core-walls. The dam was built in a natural saddle. The embankments impound water within the saddle. The dam has a main spillway and an auxiliary spillway. The main spillway is located at the right abutment of the South Embankment. It has a sharp-crested concrete weir with a crest length of 100 feet. The auxiliary spillway is a canal about 300 feet left of the South Embankment. Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations and past operational performance, Marshwood Dam is judged to be in fair condition. The spillway can pass 65 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping of the dam. The spillway capacity is rated as inadequate. This rating is dependent on implementation of some of the recommendations herein. If the low areas on the embankments were raised 0.6 foot to the design elevation, the spillway can pass 80 percent of the PMF. The spillway capacity would still be rated as inadequate.

Phase I Inspection Report written by R. Jeffrey Kimball and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dam is located approximately 2 miles northwest of the Village of Colley, Wilmot Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The inspection consisted of: Visual inspection of the retaining structure, abutments and toe; Examination of the spillway facilities, exposed portion of any outlet works and other appurtenant works; Observations affecting the runoff potential of the drainage basin; and Evaluation of the downstream area hazard potential. The dam appears to be in good condition and adequately maintained. From a brief survey conducted during the inspection, it was noted that the low spot on the crest of the dam exits at the top left edge of the spillway crest. It was observed during the inspection that a new concrete cap had been placed on the structure. The concrete appeared to be in good condition. The dam was constructed with dry rubble masonry with an upstream earthfill. No concrete exists on the downstream face of the structure or on the bench located along the downstream face of the structure. The rubble masonry appeared to be in good condition and well maintained.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Jean Dam is a zoned earth embankment approximately 26 feet high and 780 long, including spillway. The emergency spillway is an uncontrolled, rectangular, concrete and rock cut chute channel located at the right abutment. The crest of the spillway is 20 feet long and is spanned by a concrete bridge which supports a portion of the bituminous roadway that covers the embankment crest. Drawdown capability is provided by means of a 30-inch diameter cast iron blowoff pipe controlled at the inlet by a 30-inch diameter sluice gate. The facility consists of a main dam (Lake Jean Dam) and two appurtenant saddle dams (east and west dikes). Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility will pass and/or store about 73 percent of the PMF prior to overtopping the east dike. Thus, based on the screening criteria contained in the recommended guidelines, the spillway is considered to be inadequate, but not seriously inadequate. Should the saddle dams be regraded to their design elevation, the spillway would then pass floods in excess of the PMF and would be considered adequate.
