Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originally published in 1979, deals with popular perceptions and expectations of economic trends, popular preferences among economic policies, and the relationships between these and broader aspects of political behaviour like voting, attachment to the party system, and political and social attitudes. The economy has long been held to be a critical determinant of the ability of governments to gain election. This book provides unique evidence about popular expectations of inflation, evaluation of economic management, and preferences among competing economic goals and policies, without which the connection between economic management and electoral success cannot be understood. At the same time, by dealing extensively with electoral survey data for Britain since 1964, the book provides a contemporary history of electoral and political behaviour in an age of unprecedented economic management.

This book was released on 1977-10-01 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "European Yearbook" promotes the scientific study of nineteen European supranational organisations and the OECD. The series offers a detailed survey of the history, structure and yearly activities of each organisation and an up-to-date overview of the member states of each organisation. This special anniversary volume celebrates 60 years of publication of the Yearbook, and its contents differs from that of the regular volumes therefore. It offers a selection of the most important articles, dealing with European cooperation and integration, to appear in the Yearbook during its 60 years of publication. These are of particular interest not only because they provide a unique historical snapshot of the many successes (and occasional failures) in the field of European integration but also because they discuss the ideals and aims that lay behind these efforts, many of which still resonate today as Europe confronts questions about its political destiny and ideal shape. This volume contains articles in English and French."

Book excerpt: This book, a comprehensive study of twelve of the economies of key countries of the Arab world, has three main objectives: to record the developmental achievements and failings of each country; to examine the main issues arising in the drive for development; and to assess the future outlook for development for each country. Most of the countries studied only gained independence from their colonial masters in recent decades, and the process of economic development has necessarily been accompanied by political development. First published in 1978.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a major new theory of economic growth. Orthodox theories explain both the level and growth of output by three main variables: employment, the capital stock, and technical progress. The new theory does not attempt to explain the level of output, only its change over a givenperiod, and so is more historical. The capital stock is not of central interest, and there is no separate rate of technical progress. The two main explanatory variables are the growth of employment and the rate of investment. As well as demolishing existing orthodox theories, the book demonstrates that the new theory can be used to explain why growth rates differ between different countries (mainly the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom) and periods, and why the shares of profits and wages differ. Verdoon'sand Fabricant's Laws relating to productivity growth in different industries; taxation; optimum growth; and the productivity slow-down after 1973 are also discussed.

Book excerpt: These two volumes present empirical studies that have permanently altered professional debates over investment and productivity as sources of postwar economic growth in industrialized countries. The distinctive feature of investment is that returns can be internalized by the investor. The most straightforward application of this idea is to investments that create property rights, but these volumes broaden the meaning of capital formation to include investments in education and training. International Comparisons of Economic Growth focuses on comparisons among industrialized countries. Although Germany and Japan are often portrayed as economic adversaries of the U.S., postwar experiences in all three countries support policies that give high priority to stimulating and rewarding capital formation. In the Asian model of growth exemplified by Japan investments in tangible assets and human capital are especially critical during periods of rapid growth.
