Book excerpt: The people who live in towns and cities along the Mississippi River in the southern United States are a special breed, steeped in 500 years of history as rich as the coffee they drink, or the soil where once the river ran. Mississippi River Country Tales is a fast-paced, easy to read history that covers everything from the early conquistadors and the first Mardi Gras to Fannie Lou Hamer and Archie Manning, and covers the geographic region from Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and Louisiana. The book has received hearty praise from reviewers across the South: "[Mississippi River Country Tales] contains an incredible cast of real-life characters that would defy any writer of fiction to create lest they be perceived as too unbelievable. The book can do nothing but add to Jim Fraiser's growing reputation as another young Mississippi writer who knows how to tell stories about the places and people he knows best." --Biloxi Sun-Herald

Book excerpt: The little-known story of the West Florida Revolt: “One rollicking good book.” —Jay Winik When Britain ceded the territory of West Florida—what is now Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida—to Spain in 1783, America was still too young to confidently fight in one of Europe’s endless territorial contests. So it was left to the settlers, bristling at Spanish misrule, to establish a foothold in the area. Enter the Kemper brothers, whose vigilante justice culminated in a small band of American residents drafting a constitution and establishing a new government. By the time President Madison sent troops to occupy the territory, assert US authority under the Louisiana Purchase, and restore order, West Florida’s settlers had already announced their independence, becoming our country’s shortest-lived rogue “republic.” Meticulously researched and populated with some of American history’s most colorful and little-known characters, this is the story of a young country testing its power on the global stage, as well as an examination of how the frontier spirit came to define the nation’s character. The Rogue Republic shows how hardscrabble frontiersmen and gentleman farmers planted the seeds of civil war, marked the dawn of Manifest Destiny, and laid the groundwork for the American empire. “A significant study of an obscure but highly revealing moment in American history . . . Not only does Davis cast a bright light into these murky corners of our national past, he does so with a grace and clarity equal to the best historical writing today.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review “A well-documented account of ‘America’s second and smallest rebellion,’ led by a simple storekeeper named Reuben Kemper . . . Davis tells this story with nuance and panache.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the eighteenth century, over twenty different American Indian tribal groups inhabited present-day Mississippi. Today, Mississippi is home to only one tribe, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. In Mississippi's American Indians, author James F. Barnett Jr. explores the historical forces and processes that led to this sweeping change in the diversity of the state's native peoples. The book begins with a chapter on Mississippi's approximately 12,000-year prehistory, from early hunter-gatherer societies through the powerful mound building civilizations encountered by the first European expeditions. With the coming of the Spanish, French, and English to the New World, native societies in the Mississippi region connected with the Atlantic market economy, a source for guns, blankets, and many other trade items. Europeans offered these trade materials in exchange for Indian slaves and deerskins, currencies that radically altered the relationships between tribal groups. Smallpox and other diseases followed along the trading paths. Colonial competition between the French and English helped to spark the Natchez rebellion, the Chickasaw-French wars, the Choctaw civil war, and a half-century of client warfare between the Choctaws and Chickasaws. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 forced Mississippi's pro-French tribes to move west of the Mississippi River. The Diaspora included the Tunicas, Houmas, Pascagoulas, Biloxis, and a portion of the Choctaw confederacy. In the early nineteenth century, Mississippi's remaining Choctaws and Chickasaws faced a series of treaties with the United States government that ended in destitution and removal. Despite the intense pressures of European invasion, the Mississippi tribes survived by adapting and contributing to their rapidly evolving world.

ROGUE OF NEW ORLEANS They called him “Julian the Terrible.” Handsome, well-born, and hot-blooded, Julian Devereux gambled, drank, seduced women, and fought duels beneath The Oaks. The one soft spot in his heart was for his beautiful young ward, Mercy O’Shea. Julian had rescued nine-year-old Mercy on that terrible, long-ago night when he was compelled to kill her father. Wracked by guilt, Julian sponsored Mercy’s education and saw to her every need—even though the spirited young miss swore to hate him forever. But now Mercy has blossomed into a passionate, headstrong young woman, and Julian must wonder if he can save her from himself. ROGUE’S MISTRESS At eighteen, Mercy O’Shea is ready to escape her relationship with her handsome but arrogant guardian, Julian Devereux. Deliberately slighting Julian, Mercy accepts a marriage proposal from a young man Julian deems unsuitable. Furious when Julian rejects her suitor, Mercy vows to defy him, and soon discovers the horrifying, fascinating truth—that her guardian actually wants her for himself, and is even willing to blackmail her into marriage! Pride and passion explode between the strong-willed lovers as Mercy becomes Julian’s unwilling bride. Convinced that Julian only desires her physically, Mercy is determined to hide the devastating attraction she feels toward her dark, sexy husband. Julian guards his own heart, unable to reveal to Mercy that he wants her not just as a mistress but as a cherished wife. Can their fragile relationship survive all the secrets of their tortured pasts and bring love and healing to their shattered hearts? Rogue’s Mistress is a fiery, touching and sensual historical romance set in glittering antebellum New Orleans. Approximately 120,000 words. Eugenia Riley is the renowned, bestselling author of dozens of historical, contemporary, and time-travel romances, including the classics A Tryst in Time and Bushwhacked Bride.
