Book excerpt: "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" by Charles Darwin is a groundbreaking scientific work that forever changed our understanding of life on Earth. Published in 1859, Darwin's seminal text introduced the theory of evolution through natural selection, providing a comprehensive explanation for the diversity of life forms. Darwin meticulously gathered evidence from his extensive research and observations during the voyage of the HMS Beagle. He demonstrated how species evolve over time through a process of variation, competition, and survival of the fittest. By presenting a wealth of empirical data, Darwin challenged prevailing notions of creationism and laid the foundation for modern biology. The book is divided into several chapters, each addressing different aspects of natural selection and evolution. Darwin discusses the struggle for existence, variation under domestication, natural selection, the fossil record, and the geographical distribution of species. His clear and methodical approach made complex scientific concepts accessible to a broad audience, sparking widespread debate and interest. "On the Origin of Species" is celebrated not only for its scientific rigor but also for its profound impact on our understanding of the natural world. It remains a cornerstone of evolutionary biology and a testament to the power of scientific inquiry. This landmark work is essential reading for anyone interested in the origins and development of life on our planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For nearly five years, from Dec. 27, 1831, until Oct. 2, 1836, I served as naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle, exploring. During that voyage I was much amazed by how the various types of organisms were distributed around South America, and how the animals and plants presently living on that continent are related to those found only as fossils in the geological record elsewhere. These facts, as will be seen in later chapters, seemed to me to throw some light on the origin of species-that "mystery of mysteries," as it has been called by one of our greatest scientists, John Herschel. After I returned home, it occurred to me in 1837 that I might be able to help address this great question by patiently accumulating and reflecting on all sorts of facts that might have any bearing on it. Finally, after five years of work, I allowed myself to speculate on the subject and wrote up some brief notes. I enlarged these in 1844 into a sketch of the conclusions that seemed to be most probable from the evidence I had collected. Over the subsequent 15 years I have steadily pursued the same object: trying to understand how new species come about. I hope you will excuse me for entering these personal details of my work, as I give them only to show that I have not been hasty in coming to a decision"--

Book excerpt: First published in 1859, this landmark book on evolutionary biology was not the first to deal with the subject, but it went on to become a sensation—and a controversial one for many religious people who could not reconcile Darwin’s science with their faith. Darwin worked on the book for over 20 years before its publication. The radical crux of his scientific theory was the idea of natural selection, which meant that chance, not a divine Creator, played a great role in humanity's advancement and that individuals who weren't physically able to adapt with the greater populace died off.

Book excerpt: Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XI features the revolutionary work of scientific philosophy from English scientist, naturalist, and geologist CHARLES DARWIN (1809-1882). First published in 1859, On the Origin of Species is the seminal work of modern biology, positing the mechanism by which evolution operates... as easily observed even in Darwin's time in the breeding of farm animals, and as confirmed today through numerous lines of scientific inquiry. One of the most important books ever written, it transformed our understanding of the planet and our place on it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writers of the modern essay can trace their chosen genre all the way back to Michel de Montaigne (1533-92). But save for the recent notable best seller How to Live: A Life of Montaigne by Sarah Bakewell, Montaigne is largely ignored. After Montaigne--a collection of twenty-four new personal essays intended as tribute-- aims to correct this collective lapse of memory and introduce modern readers and writers to their stylistic forebear. Though it's been over four hundred years since he began writing his essays, Montaigne's writing is still fresh, and his use of the form as a means of self-exploration in the world around him reads as innovative--even by modern standards. He is, simply put, the writer to whom all essayists are indebted. Each contributor has chosen one of Montaigne's 107 essays and has written his/her own essay of the same title and on the same theme, using a quote from Montaigne's essay as an epigraph. The overall effect is akin to a covers album, with each writer offering his or her own interpretation and stylistic verve to Montaigne's themes in ways that both reinforce and challenge the French writer's prose, ideas, and forms. Featuring a who's who of contemporary essayists, After Montaigne offers a startling engagement with Montaigne and the essay form while also pointing the way to the genre's potential new directions.
