Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The icing research tunnel at the NASA Glenn Research Center underwent a major rehabilitation in 1999, necessitating recalibration of the icing clouds. This report describes the methods used in the recalibration, including the procedure used to establish a uniform icing cloud and the use of a standard icing blade technique for measurement of liquid water content. The instruments and methods used to perform the droplet size calibration are also described. The liquid water content/droplet size operating envelopes of the icing tunnel are shown for a range of airspeeds and compared to the FAA icing certification criteria. The capabilities of the IRT to produce large droplet icing clouds is also detailed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of two impinging jets of water showed that the liquid sheet formed on impingement disintegrates intermittently, forming groups of drops, which appear as waves propagating from the point of impingement. The frequency of wave occurrence was determined and the variation in frequency with jet velocity, impingement angle, jet diameter, and jet length was measured. The frequency varied between 1000 and 4000 cycles per second for the test conditions used. Photographs of spray pattern are presented.

Book excerpt: Liquid Acquisition Devices for Advanced In-Space Cryogenic Propulsion Systems discusses the importance of reliable cryogenic systems, a pivotal part of everything from engine propulsion to fuel deposits. As some of the most efficient systems involve advanced cryogenic fluid management systems that present challenging issues, the book tackles issues such as the difficulty in obtaining data, the lack of quality data and models, and the complexity in trying to model these systems. The book presents models and experimental data based on rare and hard-to-obtain cryogenic data. Through clear descriptions of practical data and models, readers will explore the development of robust and flexible liquid acquisition devices (LAD) through component-level and full-scale ground experiments, as well as analytical tools. This book presents new and rare experimental data, as well as analytical models, in a fundamental area to the aerospace and space-flight communities. With this data, the reader can consider new and improved ways to design, analyze, and build expensive flight systems. - Presents a definitive reference for design ideas, analysis tools, and performance data on cryogenic liquid acquisition devices - Provides historical perspectives to present fundamental design models and performance data, which are applied to two practical examples throughout the book - Describes a series of models to optimize liquid acquisition device performance, which are confirmed through a variety of parametric component level tests - Includes video clips of experiments on a companion website

Great strides have been made in our understanding of what is required to support an enduring human presence in space, as evidenced by progressively more advanced orbiting human outposts, culminating in the current International Space Station (ISS). However, of the more than 500 humans who have so far ventured into space, most have gone only as far as near-Earth orbit, and none have traveled beyond the orbit of the Moon. Achieving humans' further progress into the solar system had proved far more difficult than imagined in the heady days of the Apollo missions, but the potential rewards remain substantial. During its more than 50-year history, NASA's success in human space exploration has depended on the agency's ability to effectively address a wide range of biomedical, engineering, physical science, and related obstacles-an achievement made possible by NASA's strong and productive commitments to life and physical sciences research for human space exploration, and by its use of human space exploration infrastructures for scientific discovery. The Committee for the Decadal Survey of Biological and Physical Sciences acknowledges the many achievements of NASA, which are all the more remarkable given budgetary challenges and changing directions within the agency. In the past decade, however, a consequence of those challenges has been a life and physical sciences research program that was dramatically reduced in both scale and scope, with the result that the agency is poorly positioned to take full advantage of the scientific opportunities offered by the now fully equipped and staffed ISS laboratory, or to effectively pursue the scientific research needed to support the development of advanced human exploration capabilities. Although its review has left it deeply concerned about the current state of NASA's life and physical sciences research, the Committee for the Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space is nevertheless convinced that a focused science and engineering program can achieve successes that will bring the space community, the U.S. public, and policymakers to an understanding that we are ready for the next significant phase of human space exploration. The goal of this report is to lay out steps and develop a forward-looking portfolio of research that will provide the basis for recapturing the excitement and value of human spaceflight-thereby enabling the U.S. space program to deliver on new exploration initiatives that serve the nation, excite the public, and place the United States again at the forefront of space exploration for the global good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue and Durability of Structural Materials explains how mechanical material behavior relates to the design of structural machine components. The major emphasis is on fatigue and failure behavior using engineering models that have been developed to predict, in advance of service, acceptable fatigue and other durability-related lifetimes. The book covers broad classes of materials used for high-performance structural applications such as aerospace components, automobiles, and power generation systems. Coverage focuses on metallic materials but also addresses unique capabilities of important nonmetals. The concepts are applied to behavior at room or ambient temperatures; a planned second volume will address behavior at higher-temperatures. The volume is a repository of the most significant contributions by the authors to the art and science of material and structural durability over the past half century. During their careers, including 40 years of direct collaboration, they have developed a host of durability models that are based on sound physical and engineering principles. Yet, the models and interpretation of behavior have a unique simplicity that is appreciated by the practicing engineer as well as the beginning student. In addition to their own pioneering work, the authors also present the work of numerous others who have provided useful results that have moved progress in these fields. This book will be of immense value to practicing mechanical and materials engineers and designers charged with producing structural components with adequate durability. The coverage is appropriate for a range of technical levels from undergraduate engineering students through material behavior researchers and model developers. It will be of interest to personnel in the automotive and off-highway vehicle manufacturing industry, the aeronautical industry, space propulsion and the power generation/conversion industry, the electric power industry, the machine tool industry, and any industry associated with the design and manufacturing of mechanical equipment subject to cyclic loads.
