Book Synopsis The Company's Sword by : Christina Welsch
Download or read book The Company's Sword written by Christina Welsch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth century, it was a cliché that the East India Company ruled India 'by the sword.' Christina Welsch shows how Indian and European soldiers shaped and challenged the Company's political expansion and how elite officers turned those dynamics into a bid for 'stratocracy' – a state dominated by its army. Combining colonial records with Mughal Persian sources from Indian states, The Company's Sword offers new insight into India's eighteenth-century military landscape, showing how elite officers positioned themselves as the sole actors who could navigate, understand, and control those networks. Focusing on south India, rather than the Company's better-studied territories in Bengal, the analysis provides a new approach, chronology, and geography through which to understand the Company Raj. It offers a fresh perspective of the Company's collapse after the rebellions of 1857, tracing the deep roots of that conflict to the Company's eighteenth-century development.

Download or read book The Strange Case of Lord Pigot written by Sudip Bhattacharya and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strange Case of Lord Pigot recounts some interesting and true stories from English settlements in India in the 17th and 18th centuries. It traces several instances of grave insubordination and rebellion at those settlements, and culminates in the public furore over the arrest, imprisonment, and death in confinement, of one of the greatest English governors of Madras. It also recounts the remarkable tale of the rise of the Nawab of Arcot, Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, to power; his contracting of huge debts to private European creditors, and the public attention and parliamentary discussion his liabilities drew for over 40 years. Drawing mainly on contemporary publications, this narrative travels from the time of Francis Day through that of Dupleix, De Bussy, De Lally, Clive, Calcutta, the siege of Madras, and the fall of Pondicherry, to Pigot’s second governorship, and the events that followed.

Book Synopsis The Anglo-Maratha Campaigns and the Contest for India by : Randolf G. S. Cooper
Download or read book The Anglo-Maratha Campaigns and the Contest for India written by Randolf G. S. Cooper and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a cross-cultural study of the political economy of war in South Asia. Randolf G. S. Cooper combines an overview of Maratha military culture with a battle-by-battle analysis of the 1803 Anglo-Maratha Campaigns. Building on that foundation he challenges ethnocentric assumptions about British superiority in discipline, drill and technology. He argues that these campaigns, in which Arthur Wellesley served with distinction, represent the military high-water mark of the Marathas who posed the last serious opposition to the formation of the British Raj. Dr Cooper asserts that the real contest for India was never a single decisive battle for the subcontinent. Rather it turned on a complex social and political struggle for control of the South Asian military economy. The author shows that victory in 1803 hinged as much on finance, diplomacy, politics and intelligence as it did on battlefield manoeuvre and war itself.

Book Synopsis The Evolution of Military Law in India by : Dr U C Jha
Download or read book The Evolution of Military Law in India written by Dr U C Jha and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 1378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest completed code of the British army dates back to the 14th century when the “Statutes, Ordinances and Customs” were issued by Richard II to his Army in 1385 on the occasion of war with France. These statutes called “Articles” or “Ordinances of War” were issued under the prerogative power of the Crown. The earlier Articles were of excessive severity prescribing death or loss of limb as punishment for almost every crime. There were thousands of instances of accused native soldiers being blown from a gun on the orders of their commander. As minor punishment, an accused could be branded with hot iron for swearing. He could even be flogged in public or ordered to ride the wooden horse. This book provides an insight into the origin and development of the legal system of the Indian Army from the year 1600 to 1947 including that of the Navy and Air Force. A total of 40 statutes passed by the British Parliament and the Articles of War issued by the Crown for governing the military forces during that period have been included. This book is for military historians, military personnel, military lawyers, academics, journalists, and those with an interest or professional involvement in the subject.
