This book was released on 2013-02-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Robert Ker Porter’s life was as varied and dramatic as his paintings. A noted author, artist, soldier and diplomat, he was born into a military family in Durham. After developing a reputation for his painting, he travelled extensively in Northern Europe, before accepting commissions for historical paintings from the Tzar of Russia in 1805. He travelled on to Sweden where he met Sir John Moore. Sir John found him congenial company and invited him to accompany the expedition to Spain that he was to lead. Having cultivated significant contacts and friends in Russia - not least of which the Czar himself - Sir Robert’s seemingly endless travels brought him to St. Petersburg in 1811, marrying into the Russian nobility in 1812. Thus placed when Napoleon’s juggernaut attacked in that year, he accompanied the Tzar’s headquarters and wrote of his experiences in this book, which was published soon after the conclusion of the campaign. His writing is important for giving detail on the movements and thinking of the Russian leaders throughout the campaign, and his narration of the events is clear and distinctive. He also had an artist’s eye for graphic details of the fighting and the panoramic expanse of the ground that the campaign was fought over. Author — Porter, Robert Ker, Sir, 1777-1842. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814. Original Page Count – viii, 419 p.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative of the Campaign in Russia, During the Year 1812 And during the whole period the face of Europe never ceased being deluged with blood. Austria, 'who had neglected the past favourable moment to defend herb rights, was at last aroused; and be came involved, and alone too, in a desperate and unsuccessful contest with Napoleon. Spain burst forth against the tyrant, with the spirit of her an cestors. And England (however those at times in power may have committed political err01s) con tinued, in principle, true to the grand cause by feeding the flame in the peninsula; and thus kept tip that fire with which the far-spreading torch of the North now lights the rest of Europe to Eman cipation and Peace. The negative kind of amity, a body without a soul, which the Treaty of Tilsit established be tween the Empires of Russia and France, (and which endured little more than four years) gave time and occasion to Alexander to be fully aware of the ultimate views of his Gallic friend who lost not an opportunity of endeavouring by every species of intrigue to pave the'way for an easy conquest over the arms and allegiance of the sub jects'ot' his august and honourable ally. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Circumstantial Narrative of the Campaign in Russia I relate that which I have seen. A witness of the greatest disasters that ever befel a great nation; a spectator and an actor in every scene of this sad and memorable expedition. I present the reader with no fictitious narrative, artfully arranged, and heightened by false coloring. The events that passed around me were daily recorded, and I now simply endeavor to communicate the impressions which I then felt. It was by the light of the burning of Moscow, that I described the sack of that unfortunate city. It was on the borders of the Beresina, that I traced the recital of that fatal passage. The plans of the battles of the Moskwa, and Malo-Jaroslavitz, which accompany this work, were taken on the spot, at the command of prince Eugene. It is scarcely possible to conceive what difficulties I had to surmount in the progress of my work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
