Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napoleonic Studies The traveller whose way takes him through a vast forest is compelled by the needs of the case to press on to the outskirts, lest, perchance, night should overtake him amidst those tangled solitudes. He may here and there pause to glance down an attractive glade, but prudence forbids him to stray far from the main path. Very similar is the self-denying ordinance enjoined by common sense on those who essay to write the life of Napoleon. The task is so immense that wandering after side issues involves grave risk of failure to reach the goal. The historian may cast longing glances at many a subsidiary question, but his only chance of emerging from the mazes that beset him, from the time of the Paolist strifes in Corsica to the last intrigues at St. Helena, is to hold fast to the main clue. While writing my "Life of Napoleon I.," I felt the pressure of this prudential constraint. Only at some points was I tempted to disobey its behests, namely, when some new materials came to hand that shed a new light on the story as a whole. In this respect fortune favoured me at many points. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Napoleon, Vol. 1 of 2 In compiling a new History of Napoleon, it has been the object of the Author to relate, as clearly, concisely, and impartially as possible, the great events which his work necessarily embraces. The previous Biographers of the French Emperor have, for the most part, been men who were themselves partisans or actors in the long struggle produced by the French Revolution, and therefore, though perhaps unconsciously, biassed by feelings excited by passing occurrences. Hence the character of Napoleon has been exalted or depreciated, and his actions magnified or disparaged, according to the political or personal views of the writers who have recorded his achievements. The principal aim of the writer of the present work has been to review the Life of Napoleon as a whole; not only in its chivalric details, but as to its influence upon the state and prospects of Europe, and the progress of civilization throughout the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fall of Napoleon This book is not intended to be a history of Europe between the years 1813 and 1815. It is a personal history of Napoleon during that period, and European affairs are only introduced so far as they are necessary for clearness. A vast amount of Napoleonic literature has been published during the last ten or fifteen years, and with the greater part of that literature the present writer claims to be acquainted. The result of this has been not only to bring to light many facts which were previously unknown, but to modify in many respects the judgments passed upon Napoleon's actions by competent historians. For instance, no action of Napoleon has been more universally condemned than his refusal to accept terms of peace during the armistice of 1813, but the analysis of the policy of Metternich made by M. Albert Sorel in his last published volume has shown that it would have been impossible for Napoleon to have acted otherwise. It is believed that the result of these researches now finds place for the first time in an English book, and the view of Napoleon's character and conduct, which is rather indicated in these pages than positively stated, is different to that generally held by English historians. In that solemn hour it will be a solace to him to reflect that he has done what he could to rescue one of the greatest and noblest of names from unmerited obloquy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Napoleonic Statesmanship: Germany For the history of the grand-duchy of Berg the student must go to the Archives Nationales in Paris and to the Staatsarchiv at Dusseldorf. The material at the Archives Nationales is extremely voluminous, but beautifully arranged and catalogued. I have read not all, but nearly all, that is to be found there. At Dusseldorf the mass of papers is even greater, and the cataloguing very rough. Much of the material, pro bably most of it, is a duplicate of documents trans mitted to Paris; but nevertheless the archives repay a visit, and I regret that my stay was necessarily so short. There are a few papers concerning the grand duchy at the Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres, but they are of slight importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dream of Bonaparte: A Napoleonic Study The question of "Pope and Emperor" has always been a favorite one with those who have professed to write the philosophical commentary upon the events of Christian history. The reason for this attraction is not hard to find. In all the conflicts which the Popes have had to sustain against the aggressions of civil rulers, the principles at stake are always clearly defined and of deep moment. In each conflict, the opening, progress and conclusion of the storm stand out, as it were, in great serial illustrations that offer to the philosophical historian material which he cannot find elsewhere in human records. This knowledge obtained, and the work having been placed at my entire disposal by the kind ness of the gentleman who held the property, it is with great gratification that I now issue a new edition of this important history, at a price which will place it within the means of thousands to whom its former cost rendered the purchase altogether impracticable. My revi sion of the text has been, of course, limited to such corrections as occurred to me of names, dates, and figures, and even in these respects I have had very little to do.
