Book excerpt: Research on deformable and wearable electronics has promoted an increasing demand for next-generation power sources with high energy/power density that are low cost, lightweight, thin and flexible. One key challenge in flexible electrochemical energy storage devices is the development of reliable electrodes using open-framework materials with robust structures and high performance. Based on an exploration of 3D porous graphene as a flexible substrate, this book constructs free-standing, binder-free, 3D array electrodes for use in batteries, and demonstrates the reasons for the research transformation from Li to Na batteries. It incorporates the first principles of computational investigation and in situ XRD, Raman observations to systematically reveal the working mechanism of the electrodes and structure evolution during ion insertion/extraction. These encouraging results and proposed mechanisms may accelerate further development of high rate batteries using smart nanoengineering of the electrode materials, which make “Na ion battery could be better than Li ion battery” possible.

Book excerpt: To further improve the stability and capacity of the Si-based anode materials, the yolk-shell carbon-coated Si nanoparticles, which contain a void space between the yolk and shell, were studied through in situ lithiation and theoretical modeling, as discussed in Chapter 6. The geometrical dimension-dependent fracture of the nanoparticles was revealed from the experimental studies. A mechanics-based theoretical model was proposed to calculate the stress states in the carbon shell upon full lithiation. A design guideline was provided to maintain the structural integrity and maximize the capacity by optimizing the geometrical dimensions of the yolk-shell carbon-coated Si nanoparticles. Apart from voiding the fracture, interfacial stability between electrodes and cooper (Cu) current collector is also important for improving the performance of the Si-based electrode materials. In Chapter 7, the Si-coated Cu nanowires were synthesized though hydrothermal method and magnetron sputtering technique. The lithium nanostructures formed on the surface of Si shell during delithiation. The bulk lithium nanostructures reacted with the delithiated Si shell to form LixSi, inducing the fracture of the Si shell. However, the Si shell adhered well with the Cu core, indicating a stable cycling performance. These results showed the potential application of the Si-coated Cu nanowire structured anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Through the comprehensive studies of the core-shell nanostructured electrode materials, the lithiation/delithiation and fracture mechanisms of the high-capacity core-shell nanostructured electrode materials were analyzed. The experimental and theoretical approaches should be beneficial for the study of other electrode materials. The optimal design guidelines proposed in this thesis should be of great value for the design of the core-shell structured electrode materials with supreme structural integrity and high capacity for lithium ion batteries.

Book excerpt: Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized the portable electronics market, and they are currently pursued intensively for vehicle applications and storage of renewable energies (solar and wind energy). Cost, safety, cycle life, and energy and power densities are the critical parameters for these applications. With this perspective, there has been immense interest to develop new cathode and anode materials as well as to develop novel synthesis and processing approaches. This dissertation explores the use of novel synthesis approaches to obtain high-performance, nanostructured phosphate and silicate cathodes and iron oxide nanowire anodes and investigates their structure-property relationships. First, a novel microwave-solvothermal (MW-ST) approach has been developed to synthesize phase-pure, highly crystalline LiFePO4 nanorods within 5-15 minutes at low temperatures of 300 °C, without requiring reducing gas atmospheres. The LiFePO4 nanorods, after forming a nanocomposite with conducting polymer or multi-walled carbon nanotubes or coating with conductive carbon, offer excellent cycle life and rate performance when implemented as cathodes in lithium-ion cells. In addition, other LiMPO4 (M = Mn, Co, and Ni) olivine nanorods have also been synthesized by the MW-ST approach and characterized. The MW-ST process has then been extended to prepare a new class of carbon-coated, nanostructured silicates of the formula Li2MSiO4 (M = Fe and Mn). These materials have two times higher theoretical capacities (~ 330 mAh/g) than olivine phosphates (~ 170 mAh/g). Li2FeSiO4 exhibits practical discharge capacities of 148 mAh/g at room temperature and 203 mAh/g at 55 °C, with good rate capability and stable cycle life. Li2MnSiO4, on the other hand, shows higher discharge capacities of 210 mAh/g at room temperature and 250 mAh/g at 55 °C, but it exhibits poor rate performance and rapid capacity fade during cycling. In addition, carbon-coated olivine solid solution nano-particles of the formula LiM[subscript 1-y]M[subscript y]PO4 (M = Fe, Mn, Co, and Mg), synthesized by a facile, high-energy mechanical milling process (HMME), have also been investigated. The electrochemical data reveal a systematic shift in the redox potential (open-circuit voltage) of the M2/3 couples in the LiM[subscript 1-y]M[subscript y]PO4 solid solutions compared to those of the pristine LiMPO4. The shifts in the redox potentials have been explained by the changes in the M-O covalence (inductive effect), which are caused by changes in the electronegativity of M or the M-O bond length or M-O-M interactions. Finally, a two-step microwave-hydrothermal process has been developed to synthesize carbon-decorated, single-crystalline Fe3O4 nanowires. The resulting iron oxide nanowires exhibit capacity values 800 mAh/g with stable cycle life and high rate performance as an anode in lithium-ion cells.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the design, fabrication and applications of carbon-based materials for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. It provides insights into the localized electrochemical transition of the “solid-solid” reaction instead of the “sulfur-polysulfides-lithium sulfides” reaction through the desolvation effect in subnanometer pores; demonstrates that the dissolution/diffusion of polysulfide anions in electrolyte can be greatly reduced by the strong binding of sulfur to the oxygen-containing groups on reduced graphene oxide; manifests that graphene foam can be used as a 3D current collector for high sulfur loading and high sulfur content cathodes; and presents the design of a unique sandwich structure with pure sulfur between two graphene membranes as a very simple but effective approach to the fabrication of Li-S batteries with ultrafast charge/discharge rates and long service lives. The book offers an invaluable resource for researchers, scientists, and engineers in the field of energy storage, providing essential insights, useful methods, and practical ideas that can be considered for the industrial production and future application of Li-S batteries.
