Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Namdev is a central figure in the cultural history of India, especially within the field of bhakti, a devotional practice that has created publics of memory for over eight centuries. Born in the Marathi-speaking region of the Deccan in the late thirteenth century, Namdev is remembered as a simple, low-caste Hindu tailor whose innovative performances of devotional songs spread his fame widely. He is central to many religious traditions within Hinduism, as well as to Sikhism, and he is a key early literary figure in Maharashtra, northern India, and Punjab. In the modern period, Namdev appears throughout the public spheres of Marathi and Hindi and in India at large, where his identity fluctuates between regional associations and a quiet, pan-Indian, nationalist-secularist profile that champions the poor, oppressed, marginalized, and low caste. Christian Lee Novetzke considers the way social memory coheres around the figure of Namdev from the sixteenth century to the present, examining the practices that situate Namdev's memory in multiple historical publics. Focusing primarily on Maharashtra and drawing on ethnographies of devotional performance, archival materials, scholarly historiography, and popular media, especially film, Novetzke vividly illustrates how religious communities in India preserve their pasts and, in turn, create their own historical narratives.

Book excerpt: Namdev, who lived in the 14th century, was one of the greatest saint-poets of Maharashtra. Besides numerous songs in Marathi, tradition ascribes to him songs in Hindi too. According to his 16th century 'biographer' Anantdas, Namdev was the first among the nirgun greats and stood at the threshold of the remarkable religious and poetic movement which later produced men like Kabir, Raidas, Nanak and Dadu. The authors duo have edited and translated of a select number of Namdev's songs, those that are considered as belonging to the oldest strata. An authentic biography of Namdev is also presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: POET-SAINTS OF MAHARASHTRA: SELECTED POEMS Translations & Introductions Paul Smith From the 13th to the 17th century the state of Maharashtra in India gave birth to a number of great Poet-Saints whose lives and poetry is loved today as much as it was when they lived their lives of selfless devotion and praise of the Divine Beloved. They composed their poems in slokas and abhangs that are here in the correct form and meaning, with biographies and bibliographies. Janabai (1263-1350) was born to a couple from the lowest caste. She worked as a maidservant for the father of the Poet-Saint Namdev who she cared for throughout her life. Her poetry is replete with her love for God. Namdev (1270-1350) was born in Narasi-Bamani. Soon his family moved to Pandharpur where the temple of Lord Vithoba (Krishna as a boy) is located. He spent most his life there. He composed 2500 abhangs in Marathi. Dnyaneshwar (1275-1296) emerged as one the first original Poet-Saints to write in Marathi. He liberated 'divine knowledge' locked in Sanskrit to bring it into Marathi. At the age of 21 he entered into Sanjeevan Samadhi at Alandi. Mukta Bai (b.1279) was the younger sister of Dnyaneshwar but is a profound Poet-Saint in her own right. She wrote forty-one abhangs. Eknath (1533-1599) was a saint, scholar and poet. He is seen as a bridge between Dnyaneshwar and Namdev and Tukaram and Ramdas. Tukaram (1608-1654) was a prominent Poet-Saint during the Bhakti movement in India and is still greatly loved. Ramdas (1627-1682) was a Marathi Poet-Saint and a devotee of Lord Rama. Bahina Bai (1628-1700) was a disciple of Tukaram. Apart from her unique autobiography in verse she composed abhangs that deal with various subjects. Pages 198. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. "It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished. " Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator from English into Persian, knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart. Paul Smith is a poet, author and translator of over 130 books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Mu'in, Amir Khusrau, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Omar Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Mahsati, Lalla Ded, Bulleh Shah, Ghalib, Iqbal and many others, as well as his own poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and a dozen screenplays.

Book excerpt: A revised edition of the prescribed text for "Indian Literature in Translation" course of M.A. (Honours) in English & M.A. (Honours with Research) in English programmes of the University of Mumbai ******************************************** Sant Chokha Mela (13th-14th century) - संत चोखामेळा in Marathi - was born in the Mahar community which lay at the bottom of the caste hierarchy prevalent in the contemporary society. Of course, he was not to have any education even in the remotest sense of the word. Yet, such was the influence of the two founding fathers and other saints of the Varkari Sect that Chokha Mela could compose poetry of the highest order. Poetry that has stood the test of time for last seven hundred years and has become the finest example of the expression of human angst caused by the oppressive societal norms. Each poem by Chokha Mela, or Chokhoba as he was fondly called by his peers, stands testimony to the inhuman treatment that was meted out to large sections of society in the name of religion. Each of his poems is a cry of the bereaved soul that has been deprived of its humanness itself. Each of the poem is a powerful statement against the repression that a handful carried out against the masses. Such is the intensity of these poems that their reader feels the very angst that the Poet must have undergone. Such is the grip that these poems take over the reader's mind that one feels their guts being wrenched, remembering the agony of the Poet's expressions long after the poems have been read and the book kept aside.
