Book excerpt: The 24th Infantry Regiment is a "night fighting" unit and have orders to search and destroy enemy combatants in and around Mosul.Private Hunter McCall is unpopular among his fellow yakuza underlings for his fear of pain. He refuses to become tattooed with the unit's skull symbol. The macho meat eaters view McCall with disdain and ridicule him. But McCall is fiercely loyal to their boss, the legendary Lieutenant Colonel George Prescott Miles. In the testosterone world of the front line U.S. Army soldiers, no one is more feared than regiment boss LTC Miles. He is the only Lieutenant colonel in the history of U.S. Army to go out on night search and destroy missions. Seemingly invincible and ageless, the truth is he is secretly a vampire. Of course, he always manages to become separated form the group and wreak cadaverous devastation on the enemy.Inadvertently, Miles allows a "half-bitten" ISIS Uber Terrorist to escape and become a vampire. Before the insurgent vampire can be hunted down, half the ISIS forces are bitten and transformed into vampires. There are so many the tide of night battle shifts in favor of the Islamic force. Miles is accused of violating the rules of engagement when he attacks and almost kills the terrorist leader (leaving him a vampire). Then pressure for result comes from central command for results. However, every night they go out they are overwhelmed by increasing hordes of Islamic vampires. Also two Army vampires show up to reprimand Miles He has given the enemy a vampire and he must remedy the problem. Then Miles doesn't take the reprimand well and then fails to kill the new Muslim vampire. He is assassinated by vampire Black soldiers from the 24th Spanish American War and Korean War. They are old-school vampires from the 24th's history and act as it's institutional protectors.LTC Miles , in his final seconds of like bites Private McCall transforming him into a vampire. McCall becomes a super-human soldier (and vampire) who must avenge his boss's death while gaining the respect of the regiment. As the 24th Infantry Regiment loses territory. The two old-school vampires argue for "changing" the entire regiment to combat the enemy. There is a struggle for control of the regiment's leadership. McCall must defeat the old school vampires to defend the group of men who really didn't accept him when he was a mere human. The film ends with an intense battle between the 24th and the vampiric Muslims occupying Mosul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there is an increasing awareness and availability of the sacred writings of the world's religions. This raises important questions about the Christian Scriptures. What is distinctive about these writings? What role do they play in the Christian story? What makes these particular texts "holy"? The modern "battle for the Bible," with its narrow focus on proving (or disproving) biblical inerrancy, has made it difficult to provide sufficient answers. This work of constructive theology rethinks the concepts, categories, and assumptions that have dominated the modern approach to the Bible by returning to the biblical narrative and its focus on the cross. It identifies the Scriptures as the written form of the living and active Word of God, which was spoken by the prophets and apostles and became human in the person of Jesus Christ. This conception of the Bible provides Christians in this postmodern world with a solid ground from which to address pressing questions about canon, authority, and interpretation of their Scriptures.

Book excerpt: Confronting trauma behind the transnational adoption system—now back in print Many adoptees are required to become people that they were never meant to be. While transracial adoption tends to be considered benevolent, it often exacts a heavy emotional, cultural, and economic toll on those who directly experience it. Outsiders Within is a landmark publication that carefully explores this most intimate aspect of globalization through essays, fiction, poetry, and art. Moving beyond personal narrative, transracially adopted writers from around the world tackle difficult questions about how to survive the racist and ethnocentric worlds they inhabit, what connects the countries relinquishing their children to the countries importing them, why poor families of color have their children removed rather than supported—about who, ultimately, they are. In their inquiry, the contributors unseat conventional understandings of adoption politics, reframing the controversy as a debate that encompasses human rights, peace, and reproductive justice. Book excerpt: DIVThe novel that began as a radio hoax, Theodore Sturgeon’s I, Libertine is a hilarious erotic romp through the royal boudoirs of eighteenth-century London/divDIV Inspired by a notorious radio hoax in the mid-1950s, popular radio host and prankster Jean Shepherd exhorted his faithful listeners to approach their local booksellers the next morning and request copies of the historical novel I, Libertine by Frederick R. Ewing—a book that had never been written, by an author who had never been alive. The hoax was so successful that I, Libertine became the talk of the town, even earning the unique distinction of being banned by the Archdiocese of Boston, despite the fact that it didn’t yet exist. Now there was nothing left to do but write the thing . . . and fantasy and science fiction legend Theodore Sturgeon was called in to work his magic./divDIV /divDIVOriginally written pseudonymously, Sturgeon’s I, Libertine is a glorious tale of close shaves, daring escapes, and wildly licentious behavior. It covers the bawdy misdeeds of Captain Lance Courtenay as he carelessly romps through the royal court and the bedchambers of London’s finest ladies. Chock-full of wicked wit and Sturgeon’s trademark twists and turns, it is a hilarious, picaresque adventure that Ewing himself would certainly have been proud to call his own, if he had existed./divDIV /divDIVThis ebook features an illustrated biography of Theodore Sturgeon including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the University of Kansas’s Kenneth Spencer Research Library and the author’s estate, among other sources./div

Book excerpt: With brilliantly vivid irony, a mosaic of voices tells the true story of Switzerland's most notorious bank robbers: Kurt Sandweg and Waldemar Velte. As 1933 draws to a close, the pair arrive in Basel from Wuppertal, Germany. Rebels on the run, they are searching for an escape from the confines of a callously regimented society left impoverished by the Depression and the onset of Nazi power. However, their desperation leads them to a realm outside reality, on a destructive path of vengeance for the world's abhorrent lack of justice. Resolute on their doomed mission, neither expected to fall in love. Seen through the benign eyes of Dorly Schupp, the agonising humanity of their relationships are sharply juxtaposed against the reckless cruelty of their crimes. Yet in a world equally heartless and unremitting, who should shoulder the blame? Capus relates the portrait of these chillingly charismatic figures in a curious blend of documentary and narrative where precision of detail collides with an economy of emotion, and leaves the desolation of their situation stark and blindingly poignant. Suspended between the tragic and comic, Capus's novel mimics the absurd idiosyncrasies of life where often nothing but interpretation is left to determine the sacred from the profane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANCIENT FAITH AND AMERICAN-BORN CHURCHES is a groundbreaking book that brings together in dialogue, representatives of various Christian churches which function as though they were in completely different worlds. These dialogues were undertaken by the ecclesiology study group of the Faith and Order Commission, National Council of the Churches Christ. Churches originating in pre-American (pre-United States) experience were brought into dialogue with churches in the American experience, i.e., a dialogue between Roman Catholic and Baptist traditions. Some of the topics explored in the eight dialogues are apostolicity, Christian Initiation, and the authority and function of scripture. The result then is a dialogue that exemplifies much of what is best in the modern ecumenical movement. Though the participants live and work in different ecclesial communities, they were able to see each other as friends and faith--"faith that recognizes Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
