Book Synopsis Access at the Crossroads by : David R. Arendale
Download or read book Access at the Crossroads written by David R. Arendale and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning assistance often operates at the crossroads of the institution where academic affairs, student affairs, and enrollment management converge. This report investigates the effectiveness of learning assistance for supporting academic affairs with better-prepared students for academically rigorous courses, working with student affairs to achieve higher student development outcomes, and supporting enrollment management programs to increase persistence rates. This report explores difficult questions confronting learning assistance: What is the obligation of colleges for providing assistance for its students? Is learning assistance a civil rights issue for historically underrepresented students attending postsecondary education? What is the history of learning assistance for serving previous generations of students, even at the most prestigious public and private institutions in the United States? Are learning assistance needs better met by high schools and two-year institutions? Do learning assistance activities benefit the postsecondary institution and society? Although it has a presence in most postsecondary institutions, the expression of learning assistance is quite diverse through credit and noncredit activities. The preferred term used in this report is "learning assistance," because it is commonly used and most inclusive of the various approaches and activities of the field. This is the sixth issue the 35th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph in the series is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education problem, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the hallowed walls of higher education are students who did not grow up expecting to attend college, students who walked through open doors not knowing what to expect on the other side. For some, these open doors became revolving doors, and they simply gave up. For many others, however, there were unexpected successes, successes that included more than academic accomplishments. These people came through the system with an increased sense of self-confidence that empowered them in the world beyond college. This oral history tells the story of the struggles as well as of the triumphs related to the fight for access and high quality in higher education. Thus, it provides a unique look at the past state of higher education, and at the measures that might be taken to improve our future educational system. The book begins with a brief historical overview of what access to higher education looked like before the 20th century. Following chapters tell the actual stories and are organized around four themes: the power of belief in students; access with success; institutional commitment; and effective support systems. Finally, a set of recommendations is provided that will help to keep the doors open for those still wishing to enter. Educators at all levels, graduate students studying higher education, and interested readers in the general public will all find this book an invaluable resource.
Book Synopsis Community College Mathematics by : Brian Cafarella
Download or read book Community College Mathematics written by Brian Cafarella and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the rich history of community college math with a specific focus on gatekeeper math classes. Gatekeeper math classes include courses such as college algebra, introduction to statistics, and all developmental math classes. For community colleges, successful completion of these classes is imperative for student retention. This book presents a decade-by-decade analysis of the history of community college mathematics. The author employs a mix of conceptual, empirical, and quantitative research. The empirical research stems from interviews with 30 community college faculty members from seven community colleges. From the 1970s to the pandemic in the early 2020s, the book explores math curricula as well as trends, initiatives, teaching practices, and mandates that have impacted community college math. The positives and negatives of such trends, initiatives, and mandates are presented along with suggestions on how to apply such knowledge going forward. The author addresses the key questions: How can we build a future model for community college gatekeeper math classes that is both successful and sustainable? Additionally, how can we learn from the past and the present to build such a model? This book will be ideal for students in graduate programs focusing on community college leadership or developmental education leadership as well as all those hoping to improve success rates in community college mathematics programs.

And the best thing about these ideas is that they are not the usual endlessly-discussed theories_these are ideas that have worked_and some which have failed_in the real world...Despite the myriad new works available today related to library instruction in general and information literacy in particular, none is devoted solely to collaborative efforts between teaching faculty and librarians. This is where Library User Education: Powerful Learning, Powerful Partnerships shines_just as in the real world, it's all about collaboration.' _Angela Weiler, Portal

Book Synopsis Supplemental Instruction by : Marion E. Stone
Download or read book Supplemental Instruction written by Marion E. Stone and published by First-Year Experience and Students in Transition University of South Carolina. This book was released on 2008 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes Supplemental Instruction, a student assistance program designed to improve the academic success of college freshmen based on the idea that if students are not being successful in courses then perhaps colleges should change the way courses are taught. Supplemental Instruction (SI) utilizes regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated sessions that offer students an opportunity to discuss and process course information. SI does not identify high-risk students but rather identifies high-risk classes. The first edition was reprinted with minor revisions a year after its initial release, however, this third edition offers an opportunity to explore the subsequent progression of SI and serve as a practical resource for educators seeking to implement a new program or revamp an existing one. The monograph beings with the: Introduction: "Thirty-Five Years of Supplemental Instruction: Reflections on Study Groups and Student Learning." (F, Kim Wilcox and Glen Jacobs). Next follow nine chapters. The first chapter presents the "Basic Supplemental Instruction Model." (Maureen Hurley and Melinda Gilbert). Chapter 2 explains "Research on the Effectiveness of Supplemental Instruction." (Maureen Hurley and Melinda Gilbert). Chapter 3 explains "Theoretical Frameworks That Inform the Supplemental Instruction Model." (Sandra Zerger). Chapter 4 looks at "Implementing a New Supplemental Instruction Program." (F. Kim Wilcox). Chapter 5 explores "Recruiting and Training Supplemental Instruction Leaders." (Amelia McDaniel). Chapter 6 presents "Strategies for Adapting Supplemental Instruction to Specific Academic Disciplines." (Sandra Zerger). Chapter 7 offers "Video-Based Supplemental Instruction." (Maureen Hurley, Kay Patterson, Sonny Painter, Jennifer Carnicom). Chapter 8 presents "Supplemental Instruction: International Adaptations and Future Directions." (Glen Jacobs, M. Lisa Stout, Marion E. Stone). The last chapter provides the Epilogue: "Concluding the First 35 Years." (Amelia McDaniel). The monograph also includes a Foreword by Glen Jacobs and Marion E. Stone and a section about the contributors. The following are appended: (1) Glossary of Terms; and (2) Selected Annotated Bibliography for Supplemental Instruction. [Individual chapters contain notes and/or references. For "Supplemental Instruction: Improving First-Year Student Success in High-Risk Courses. The Freshman Year Experience: Monograph Series Number 7," see ED354839. This monograph was co-sponsored with the International Center for SI, University of Missouri-Kansas City.].
