Book Synopsis Prophets in the Wilderness by : John M. R. Owens
Download or read book Prophets in the Wilderness written by John M. R. Owens and published by [Auckland, N.Z.] : Auckland University Press. This book was released on 1974 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "New Zealand missionaries have been variously painted as heroes, villains, or figures of fun ; and in this portrait of the origins of the Wesleyan mission at Whangaroa in the 1820s the reader can take his choice. For the story is largely told in the missionaries' own words, from contemporary letters and journals which have gradually become available in libraries and archives throughout New Zealand, Australia and Britain. The first part is a narrative, beginning with pious hopes, continuing with the slow erosion of unexpected stress, ending finally with an attack on the mission station and the missionaries fleeing for their lives. It is a dramatic story, told with a day-by-day human detail which gives it some of the immediacy of a historical novel. The second part of the book tackles the detective problem of why the mission station was attacked and by whom ; and goes on to examine the range of sanctions controlling behaviour of missionaries and Maoris and the exchange of religious ideas between them. It challenges many accepted views about the missionary role and the origin of race relations in New Zealand and is a case study inviting comparison with missionary and contact situations throughout the world."--Inside front cover.

Book Synopsis Whipscars and Tattoos by : Geoffrey Sanborn
Download or read book Whipscars and Tattoos written by Geoffrey Sanborn and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-02-09 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Whipscars and Tattoos, Geoffrey Sanborn dramatically transforms the standard interpretations of two of the most important novels in American literary history. On the basis of original scholarship showing that Magua, the supposed villain of The Last of the Mohicans, and Queequeg, the supposed emblem of love in Moby-Dick, are based on Maori chiefs, Sanborn argues that each character is, above all else, an embodiment of the fiercely majestic qualities that were conventionally associated with high-ranking Maori men.In this striking transnational context, The Last of the Mohicans reappears before us as a simultaneously elitist and anti-racist novel, influenced not only by the contemporary conception of the Maori as the tribal people most likely to establish an independent, modernizing nation, but by the surge of political idealism that accompanied the global revolutions of the early 1820s. Moby-Dick undergoes a similarly profound metamorphosis. By enabling us to see Queequeg as an incarnation of the quintessentially Maori virtues of mana and tapu--power and untouchability--Sanborn makes it possible for us to see the White Whale as the epitome of those virtues, opening us to a vision of the world in which every being is moved and shaped by a furious, doomed insistence on its value.Formally as well as argumentatively, Whipscars and Tattoos breaks new ground. Rather than restrict his account of the Maori to an overview of Western representations of New Zealand, Sanborn devotes entire chapters to the life stories of Te Ara and Te Pehi Kupe, the chiefs on whom Magua and Queequeg were modeled. The result is a book in which life bleeds into literature and back again, in which Maori biographies cross-fertilize with readings of American novels, and in which defiant self-assertion is provocatively reimagined as the basis of our relationship to the world.
