Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the reaction of the common people to some of the tumultuous events which occurred in Northamptonshire and shaped England's history, and how this gave rise to many colourful folklore traditions. Especially rich in dialect, vocabulary, legends, and wondrous stories that have been handed down through the ages, the character of Northamptonshire and its people is firmly rooted in its folklore. There are tales of literary folk and noblemen, but always at the heart of Northamptonshire's folklore are the traditional beliefs, stories, events and customs of the common people. Daily life itself contained numerous beliefs and maxims, omens and superstitions - often based on fear of the uncertain - as well as being full of music and verse, dance and song. These delightful, revealing and sometimes fanciful traditions have remained hidden until now.

Book Synopsis Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths around Northampton by : Paul Harrison
Download or read book Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths around Northampton written by Paul Harrison and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty true tales of violence and villainy in this area of England’s East Midlands—includes illustrations. Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths Around Northampton investigates the darker side of humanity in cases of murder, deceit, and pure malice committed over the centuries in this picturesque part of England. For this journey into Northampton’s bloody past, Paul Harrison has selected over twenty notorious episodes that give a fascinating insight into criminal acts and the criminal mind. He reinvestigates some of the most intriguing cases, introduces new evidence, and questions verdicts that were reached many years ago. Among the cases are two old people who were bludgeoned to death for no apparent reason; the murder of a mistress and her child; a philandering salesman who faked his own death; a promiscuous woman who came to a cruel end; a shoemaker who brutally attacked his wife; and the disappearance of Lydia Atley, whose remains were never found. These human dramas are often played out in the most commonplace of circumstances—while others are so odd as to be stranger than fiction.
Book Synopsis Historical Legends of Northamptonshire (Classic Reprint) by : Alfred T. Story
Download or read book Historical Legends of Northamptonshire (Classic Reprint) written by Alfred T. Story and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Legends of Northamptonshire The following sketches were originally written, for the most part while the Author was resident in Northamptonshire, with a view merely to filling an occasional column of a newspaper. Many of them subsequently appeared in the Northampton Mercury, and it was only in consequence of the interest they then excited that the Author was induced to issue them in book form. This brief statement is necessary to explain some faults of style and construction arising out of the form in which the various Legends were originally cast, and in great measure published. In other respects they have been carefully revised and corrected. The collection would have been much larger but for an accident to which the best regulated Authors copy is liable, especially when at the mercy of occasional Arctic frosts - and still worse - sublunary plumbers. However, the disaster is not irremediable, and if this small budget receive favourable attention, the rest may follow in time. Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities by : Charles Russell Coulter
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities written by Charles Russell Coulter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, humans have pondered the question of their existence. In nearly every society, part of the answer has included some form of god or goddess. For the Mayans, one such deity was Ajtzak, who tried to create humans from wood; for the Yorubas of Africa, Shango controlled the thunder and lightning. The Chinese of the Shang dynasty era worshipped Shang Ti. Evil deities were also part of the answer, as in the case of the Kuvera, the Hindu chief of evil in the Vedic period, and Tu, the Persian or Islamic demon of fatal accidents. All of the known ancient gods, many heretofore obscure or known only from mythological literature, are included in this exhaustive reference work. The focus is on their origins, histories, and functions. The people who believed in each deity are identified, along with alternate names or spellings both old and modern. The descriptions that follow are of the functions, origins and physical nature of the deities. Extensive cross references are provided for alternate spellings and names.
