Glücklicherweise kam es nie dazu; statt dessen resultierte aus dieser Arbeit sein zweiter Roman: „Die letzte Welt“. In diesem Roman erzählt Ransmayr die Geschichte des Römers Cotta, der in die Stadt Tomi reist, um dort nach dem Verbannten Ovid und seinem Werk – den „Metamorphosen“ – zu suchen. Soweit scheint der Roman in der Tradition der historischen Romane zu stehen, doch schon bald bekommt dieses Bild Risse: Nicht nur, daß Ovids Werk im Roman als verloren gilt, weil es von Ovid verbrannt wurde, sondern auch die gesamte Zeit des Romans, in der die Handlung spielt, scheint auf dem Kopf zu stehen. So läßt Ransmayr etwa im historischen Tomi eine verrostete Bushaltestelle entstehen oder aber Ovid vor einem Strauß Mikrophone sprechen. Neben den genannten Beispielen wimmelt das Werk geradezu von Anachronismen, die 2000 Jahre Menschheitsgeschichte vereinen. Warum bricht Ransmayr so deutlich mit der Tradition des historischen Romans und läßt statt dessen die Zeiten miteinander verschmelzen? Zudem tauchen die Figuren aus Ovids Metamorphosen, zumindest namentlich, als Akteure in Tomi auf, wobei sie durchaus Eigenschaften ihrer Namensgeber aufweisen, und erscheinen gleichzeitig auf Zelluloid gebannt – in klassischen ovidischen Geschichten, die der Filmvorführer Cyparis zeigt. Daneben sollen auch andere Probleme der Zeit in Ransmayrs Roman betrachtet werden. Besonders hervorgehoben werden hierbei statische Elemente, wie z.B. der „Maulbeerbaum“, welcher – im Gegensatz zu fast allen anderen Elementen des Romans – im Laufe der Handlung keiner Veränderung unterliegt, aber auch zirkuläre Momente. Hat „Die letzte Welt“ wirklich einen Schluß oder scheint mit ihrem Ende nicht auch ein Neubeginn der Zeit erreicht?

Ovidius Naso, in einer Weise wiederauferstehen bzw. weiterleben läßt, daß in der steten Veränderung seiner Figuren und seiner erzählten Welt eine Richtung deutlich wird: die Richtung auf den Tod der letzten Welt zu, die Mündung der Dekadenz und Abstumpfung im endlichen Untergang dieser Welt. In dieser Arbeit soll dieser Untergang näher beleuchtet werden und vor allem die Frage, ob dieses Ende ein tatsächliches Ende ist oder nur die kosmische Metamorphose, das Zeichen dafür, daß die Zivilisation in ihrer Gesamtentwicklung ein großer Zyklus ist und mit dem Sterben ein neues (Wieder-)Entstehen einhergeht,3 das der paradiesischen Welt, die zu Beginn der Ovidischen Metamorphosen geschaffen wird.4 Es soll untersucht werden, wie dieses Szenario abläuft und vor allem, welche symbolträchtige Rolle hierbei die mythische Grundlage spielt und inwiefern die Diegese mir gleicher Motivation mythisch konstruiert ist. Die Literaturlage zu Ransmayrs Roman ist reichhaltig, handelt es sich doch um einen der populärsten, wenn nicht den populärsten Roman der Postmoderne. Auf diesen Bereich werde ich in dieser Arbeit allerdings nicht eingehen, da dies den Rahmen sprengte. Untersucht man die mythisch konstruierte Diegese, findet sich hingegen sehr wenig unterstützende Literatur, eine beiläufige Behandlung dieses Themas ist hier und da zu finden, und dies muß auch der Grundstock an Sekundärliteratur für diese Arbeit bleiben. Ferner verzichte ich auf eine ausführliche Behandlung der mythischen Erzählstruktur, da dies in einer anderen Arbeit getan werden soll.

Whilst a broad range of mythological, legendary, fairytale and folktale traditions have played an appreciable part, Ovid's Metamorphoses is still an important comparative analysis and reference point for nineteenth- and twentieth-century German-language narratives of transformations. Metamorphosis is most often used as an index of crisis: an existential crisis of the subject or a crisis in a society's moral, social or cultural values. Specifically selected texts for analysis include Jeremias Gotthelf's Die schwarze Spinne (1842) with the terrifying metamorphoses of Christine into a black spider, the metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa in Kafka's Die Verwandlung (1915), ambiguous metamorphoses in E. T. A. Hoffmann's Der goldne Topf (1814), Hermann Hesse's Piktors Verwandlungen (1925), Der Steppenwolf (1927) and Christoph Ransmayr's Die letzte Welt (1988). Other mythical metamorphoses are examined in texts by Bachmann, Fouqué, Fontane, Goethe, Nietzsche, Nelly Sachs, Thomas Mann and Wagner, and these and many others confirm that metamorphosis is used historically, scientifically, for religious purposes; to highlight identity, sexuality, a dream state, or for metaphoric, metonymic or allegorical reasons.
