The glorified myth of a frontier moving faster and faster into the unknown is deeply rooted in the heads of the American people, since the first settlers moved westwards, over hundred-fifty years ago. It had an enormous impact on America’s history and on its national identity. But can this idea of a frontier still be found today, or is it just a historically important, but today mostly unappealing episode in recent history books? Furthermore, I will try to find an answer where hints and connections to the myth of the Old West - with its cowboys, lonesome riders and sheriffs - can be found in modern American culture. Are those images of the wild, deserted West still topical and influential, and if so, where. In which parts of life and culture can they be found, or are the Old West and the Western Myth just outdated? I’m going to carry out my researches about this topic with the help of the books ‘The American frontier – Go West, young man’ by Prof. Dr. Michael Porsche, ‘The frontier in American History’ by Frederick Jackson Turner, ‘The Wild West: Myth and History’ by Alexander Emmerich and several internet sources to illustrate and prove my theses. At the end of this term paper I hope to be able to point out, in which parts of everyday life in modern America references to the myth of the Wild West and the American Frontier can be found and which significance they have.

The number of definitions of what is meant by "the West" is close to the number of references made to it - in numerous fields. Only by looking at individual examples of western myth at work can we find ways to appoach the myth itself and its consequences. In this paper I want to illuminate the intellectual and cultural web that is worked into and created around the Hollywood-made motion picture "Thelma & Louise". Following a rather broad attempt I want to give a comprehensive overview over all the printed reactions and reviews of this piece of discourse beginning with a few "traditional Westerns" and a piece of generic criticism by a young female American film critic. Following that, the story of the movie will be recaptured, analyzed, and thereby, finally, interpreted. Book excerpt: The idea that religion has a dangerous tendency to promote violence is part of the conventional wisdom of Western societies, and it underlies many of our institutions and policies, from limits on the public role of religion to efforts to promote liberal democracy in the Middle East. William T. Cavanaugh challenges this conventional wisdom by examining how the twin categories of religion and the secular are constructed. A growing body of scholarly work explores how the category 'religion' has been constructed in the modern West and in colonial contexts according to specific configurations of political power. Cavanaugh draws on this scholarship to examine how timeless and transcultural categories of 'religion and 'the secular' are used in arguments that religion causes violence. He argues three points: 1) There is no transhistorical and transcultural essence of religion. What counts as religious or secular in any given context is a function of political configurations of power; 2) Such a transhistorical and transcultural concept of religion as non-rational and prone to violence is one of the foundational legitimating myths of Western society; 3) This myth can be and is used to legitimate neo-colonial violence against non-Western others, particularly the Muslim world.

But he is less known as a social theorist. His contribution in this area is quite extensive, important, and relevant for understanding of many social facts, including the delicate process of social change. His utterings are worthwhile, reasonable, and scientific to a great extent. Freud is not valuable only for his theoretical activities, but he is also inevitable for locating a better profile of human behavior, society, culture, and civilization. By exhibiting the fact that neither the unconscious was absolute, eternal, or unalterable nor the conscious, he emphasized the idea that the reality and psyche were interdependent. Social circumstances and psyche shaped and conditioned each other; neither could grow in isolation. Freud pointed out that there was a conflict within each individual and that was the fundamental feature of 'socialization' into every societyan unavoidable 'Repression', characterizing human life. Repression occupies a major area in Freudian literature, so does the idea of social distance. Social distance, according to Freud, is not only a biological entity, but also is a functional entity. Social distance, as is adhered to by the Marxian dialectical materialists as being the creation of private property and its disproportionate ownership, identified as a symbol of superiority in any such spheres as power, prestige, privilege, etc, is considered to be an inevitable phenomenon in human existence and its movement forward.
