Book excerpt: According to Sara Crosby, the new popular ‘power of horror’—in writings by Poe and many others—gave American authors a new way of moving beyond beauty through the ‘poisonous muse.’ This new power corresponds to the vitalizing changes in Jacksonian America and brings with it a major change in US literary history. Her study of these changes in the US cultural scene is an incredibly engaging, vibrant narrative.

Book Synopsis Understanding Revelation by : Malcolm Hedding
Download or read book Understanding Revelation written by Malcolm Hedding and published by Intend. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation is often polarizing. Many choose to avoid the work altogether, declaring it to be unknowable or intimidating. Others maintain a fascination with the images and characters of the prophetic pictures of Revelation. Malcolm provides a remarkable perspective on the Book of Revelation. He invites the reader into the text, providing a devotional approach to the truth presented. His insights help illuminate the promises and warnings of God. His combination of scholarship and pastoral concern are very helpful in sorting through the complexities of Revelation and therefore his discussion of the "temporal, eternal and eschatological" aspects of Revelation constitutes very helpful distinctions. Malcolm does a remarkable job of introducing the reader to Jesus throughout the Book of Revelation. It is after all a "Revelation of Jesus Christ."
Book Synopsis Without Benefit of Clergy by : Karin E. Gedge
Download or read book Without Benefit of Clergy written by Karin E. Gedge and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common view of the nineteenth-century pastoral relationship--found in both contemporary popular accounts and 20th-century scholarship--was that women and clergymen formed a natural alliance and enjoyed a particular influence over each other. In Without Benefit of Clergy, Karin Gedge tests this thesis by examining the pastoral relationship from the perspective of the minister, the female parishioner, and the larger culture. The question that troubled religious women seeking counsel, says Gedge, was: would their minister respect them, help them, honor them? Surprisingly, she finds, the answer was frequently negative. Gedge supports her conclusion with evidence from a wide range of previously untapped primary sources including pastoral manuals, seminary students' and pastors' journals, women's diaries and letters, pamphlets, sentimental and sensational novels, and The Scarlet Letter.

Book Synopsis The Pulpit Commentary, Volume 8 by : Spence-Jones, Henry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulpit Commentary was first published between 1880 and 1919 and is a highly respected work written by conservative, trustworthy men. Containing over 22,000 pages and 95,000 entries, it is one of the largest and best-selling homiletic commentary sets of all time. It was directed by editors Joseph Exell and Henry Donald Maurice Spence-Jones and utilized more than 100 authors over a 30-year span. When reading this commentary, it is not difficult to see why it has remained a favorite amongst pastors for more than 100 years. There are three key elements which set this apart from its contemporaries, the first being that it gives an exposition or verse-by-verse annotation of each verse in the Bible. The second element is that it explores the framework of the text, the homiletics. Finally, it supplies the homilies with multiple model sermons from various authors. Also included is a translation as well as historical and geographical information. The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle declared, “This commentary bids fair to take a conspicuous place among the ever-multiplying aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures. It will revive the great work of Lange, and will far exceed the Speaker's Commentary in the bulk and fullness of its material. The peculiarity of the Pulpit Commentary is that it offers special assistance to the preacher: first by giving him a critical and exegetical exposition of the text of Scripture, and then providing him with succinct and helpful directions as to the preachable aspects of the chapter and paragraph already explained." The print edition of this set typically retails for more than $1,000 making the current offered price a very good bargain. Due to its size, it has been broken up into nine separate volumes: Volume 1 - Genesis to Joshua Volume 2 - Judges to 2 Kings Volume 3 - 1 Chronicles to Job Volume 4 - Psalms to Song of Songs Volume 5 - Isaiah to Daniel Volume 6 - Hosea to Malachi Volume 7 - Matthew to John Volume 8 - Act to Philippians Volume 9- Colossians to Revelation The footnotes have been placed in line with the text with each footnote number enclosed in red brackets (i.e.: []) and the text in green. There is also a linked table of contents at the beginning of each volume for ease of navigation. Book Synopsis The Mystery of the Gospel by : Evangelist Victor A. Sackey
Download or read book The Mystery of the Gospel written by Evangelist Victor A. Sackey and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystery of the Gospel: Revealing the First Century Truths About the Kingdom of God is an attempt to expose the messages of the coming kingdom of God to earth, which Christ brought down from the Father unto mankind. This knowledge is not known by majority of professing Christendom, but God wants the latter to be encompassed by the truth because it is evident that there is an undeniable force, power, and sovereignty of the Spirit of God moving within the true church of God and also the end-time charismatic movement of Christians. The coming of Christ and his establishment of the church of God became the standard and benchmark for living the Christian life at the time. However, due to opposing forces to the church of God and the first followers of Christ, the truth became suppressed. In other words, the first-century message and essence of the coming of Christ to proclaim his coming kingdom became lost or seriously flawed. Fortunately, Christ gave a promise concerning his church. He said, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Despite the continuous existence of Gods true church, God is still real and moving in the lives of all professing Christians who are in the majority but are ignorant of the existence of the true church of God. God is not out to save all of humanity in this lifetime but will introduce and reeducate humanity to the laws and government of heaven in the millennial rule of Christ here on earth. God is a family, and as Christ is the firstborn of many brethren, so shall the first-fruit saints be called, begotten, and then born or resurrected as sons and daughters, and the rest of the professing Christians as the children being re-taught the truths, laws, statutes, and commandments of God in the kingdom.
