Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1986, I was invited to attend a symposium held in Barcelona on Diseases of the Pericardium. The course was directed by Dr. J. Soler-Soler, director of Cardiology at Hospital General Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona. During my brief but delightful visit to this institution, my appreciation of the depth and breadth of study into pericardial diseases, carried out by Dr. Soler and his group, grew into the conviction that these clinical investigators have accumulated a wealth of information concerning pericardial diseases, and that investigators and clinicians practicing in English speaking countries would greatly profit from ready access to the results of the clinical investiga tions into pericardial disease carried out in Barcelona. The proceedings of the Barcelona conference were published in a beauti fully executed volume in the Spanish language edited by Dr. Soler and pro duced by Ediciones Doyma. Because I believe that this work should be brought to the attention of the English speaking scientific and clinical com munities, I encouraged Dr. Soler to have the book translated into English. I knew that this task could be accomplished and that the book would be trans lated into good English without change of its content. My confidence was based upon a translation of my own book, The Pericardium, into Spanish undertaken by Dr. Permanyer, who is a contributor and co-editor of the pre sent volume.

Book excerpt: This book provides an easy-to-use guide, giving cardiologists and other physicians more confidence in training with and understanding cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in clinical daily practice. The case-based format promotes step-by-step learning and makes this book a helpful tool for students, residents and trainees in cardiology. An updated, comprehensive review of CMR diagnostic criteria is provided for all clinical cardiovascular applications of CMR in adult patients, from ischemic heart diseases to myocarditis, and from pericardial diseases to tumors, artifacts and incidental findings. CMR is an expanding imaging technique for cardiologists and radiologists alike. Despite several textbooks, manuals and dedicated texts, clinicians may still find it difficult to familiarize themselves with the exam and there are limited formats that provide easy access to the basic information (e.g. physics, specific applications) that are needed for training and clinical interpretation (especially case-based). By describing the basics of physics and methodology in a straightforward manner and providing meaningful clinical examples, this book will help all cardiologists dealing with cardiac imaging as well as doctors in training to quickly and accurately interpret CMR findings in their clinical practice.

Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive information and clarity on all aspects of diagnosing and managing constrictive pericarditis. The operative procedures for constrictive pericarditis are presented in detail with technical tips supplemented by surgical videos. Further, it explores and guides on issues with mixed opinions like the role of corticosteroids, timing of the operation, choice of the operative procedure, terminologies to describe the extent of decortication, and the requirement of cardiopulmonary bypass. Despite experience spanning over 100 years, there is no fool-proof formula in the published literature that can be used in selecting an optimal surgical approach for a given patient. The terms "radical", "total", "extensive", "complete", "subtotal", "adequate", "near-total" and "partial" pericardiectomy also have been variably used in the literature, often without a precise definition of the limits of pericardial resection. Providing an update on the latest advancements and long-term results of pericardiectomy appeals to all clinicians managing constrictive pericarditis. For the trainees, it offers insights into surgical techniques' relevant anatomy and foundation. The book will be beneficial to MBBS, MD, MS, M.Ch (CTVS), DM (Cardiology), Diplomate of National Board (Cardiology and CTVS), FRCS, FRACS, MD (USA, Canada, and in all developing and developed countries).
