Book Synopsis Mycenaean Civilization by : Bryan Feuer
Download or read book Mycenaean Civilization written by Bryan Feuer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-03-16 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Greeks considered the Mycenaean civilization to be the basis of their glorious and heroic heritage, but its material existence was not confirmed until the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in the late nineteenth century. In the ensuing years, as with the field of archaeology in general, emphasis has shifted from revealing monuments and finding treasure to dealing with less glamorous, more scientifically-oriented investigations concerning aspects such as social and political organization, economic functions and settlement patterns. With its more than 2000 entries, this reference work serves as both an introduction to and a summary of the study of ancient Mycenaean civilization. Considerably expanded from the first edition, there are 500 new entries representing materials published since 1991. The largest part of the book is made up of annotated bibliography entries arranged topically with introductory material for each section. The book also includes a general introduction to Mycenaean civilization, a glossary, and author, place and subject indexes.

Book Synopsis The New Documents in Mycenaean Greek: Volume 1, Introductory Essays by : John Killen
Download or read book The New Documents in Mycenaean Greek: Volume 1, Introductory Essays written by John Killen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952 Michael Ventris deciphered the script found on the Linear B tablets from Crete and the Greek mainland, therefore revealing the earliest known form of Greek. In 1956 he and John Chadwick published Documents in Mycenaean Greek, which gave an account of the decipherment, of the language of the tablets, of the society and economy revealed by the documents and a series of chapters giving texts, translations and commentary of the most important tablets. Though partially updated in 1973, Documents is now very much outdated: there has been a vast accrual of bibliography on the subject since 1973, and discoveries of tablets at new sites. This new survey, written by fourteen of the world's leading experts, will bring the reader fully up-to-date with developments in all aspects of Mycenaean studies, concluding with a new, full glossary of all the most recently discovered words.

Book Synopsis The Undeciphered Signs of Linear B by : Anna P. Judson
Download or read book The Undeciphered Signs of Linear B written by Anna P. Judson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades after Michael Ventris deciphered Linear B and showed that its language was Greek, nearly one-sixth of its syllabic signs' sound-values are still unknown. This book offers a new approach to establishing these undeciphered signs' possible values. Analysis of Linear B's structure and usage not only establishes these signs' most likely sound-values – providing the best possible basis for future decipherments – but also sheds light on the writing system as a whole. The undeciphered signs are also used to explore the evidence provided by palaeography for the chronology of the Linear B documents and the activities of the Mycenaean scribes. The conclusions presented in this book therefore deepen our understanding not only of the undeciphered signs but also of the Linear B writing system as a whole, the texts it was used to write, and the insight these documents bring us into the world of the Mycenaean palaces. A colour version of figures 5.1-5.4 of chapter 5 can be found under the 'Resources' tab.
Book Synopsis Studies in Local Case Relations in Mycenaean Greek by : F. M. J. Waanders
Download or read book Studies in Local Case Relations in Mycenaean Greek written by F. M. J. Waanders and published by Brill. This book was released on 1997 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this investigation is to determine the nature of the local case relations to be found in the Mycenaean texts, and the forms by means of which these case relations are expressed. Though much work has already been done in this field, a re-examination of the relevant words and expressions in their contexts may still be rewarding. To put the Mycenaean data in relief, the language of the Homeric epics will receive due attention, and occasionally also dialect inscriptions and post-Homeric literary sources, as need may be.
Book Synopsis Mycenaean Messenia and the Kingdom of Pylos by : Richard Hope Simpson
Download or read book Mycenaean Messenia and the Kingdom of Pylos written by Richard Hope Simpson and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study outlines the state of our present knowledge concerning the Mycenaean settlements in Messenia and examines the evidence for reconstructing the political geography of the "Kingdom" of Pylos. The progress of archaeological exploration in Messenia is reviewed in relation to the Mycenaean (Late Helladic [LH]) period. The data from excavations and surveys concerning the Mycenaean settlements in Messenia are summarized. The author attempts to determine the extent of the "Kingdom" and to identify the locations of its main districts by correlating the archaeological data from Mycenaean sites with the the inscriptions in Linear B found in the "Palace of Nestor" at Ano Englianos.
Book Synopsis Wool Economy in the Ancient Near East by : Catherine Breniquet
Download or read book Wool Economy in the Ancient Near East written by Catherine Breniquet and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Ancient Near East covers a huge chronological frame, from the first pictographic texts of the late 4th millennium to the conquest of Alexander the Great in 333 BC. During these millennia, different societies developed in a changing landscape where sheep (and their wool) always played an important economic role. The 22 papers presented here explore the place of wool in the ancient economy of the region, where large-scale textile production began during the second half of the 3rd millennium. By placing emphasis on the development of multi-disciplinary methodologies, experimentation and use of archaeological evidence combined with ancient textual sources, the wide-ranging contributions explore a number of key themes. These include: the first uses of wool in textile manufacture and organization of weaving; trade and exchange; the role of wool in institutionalized economies; and the reconstruction of the processes that led to this first form of industry in Antiquity. The numerous archaeological and written sources provide an enormous amount of data on wool, textile crafts, and clothing and these inter-disciplinary studies are beginning to present a comprehensive picture of the economic and cultural impact of woollen textiles and textile manufacturing on formative ancient societies.

Download or read book Ancient Taxation written by Jonathan Valk and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of studies that explores the extractive systems of eleven ancient states and societies from across the ancient world Ancient Taxation is a collection of studies that explores the extractive systems of eleven ancient states and societies from across the ancient world, ranging from Bronze Age China to Anglo-Saxon Britain. The contributors discuss the inherent challenges of taxation in predominantly agro-pastoral societies, including basic tax strategy (e.g., taxing goods vs. labor, in-kind vs. money taxes, etc.); the mechanics of assessment and collection; and the politics of negotiating the cooperation of social, economic, and political élites and other important social groups. In assembling a broad range of studies, this book sheds new light on the commonalities and differences between ancient taxation systems, and so on the broader fiscal and institutional practices of antiquity. It also provides new impetus for further comparative research into extractive practices across ancient societies and between antiquity and recent historical periods. The book will be of interest to those studying ancient social and economic history, the history of social organization, and the history of ancient Greece and Rome, Egypt, the Ancient Near East, or ancient China.
Book Synopsis Economics of Religion in the Mycenaean World by : Lisa Maria Bendall
Download or read book Economics of Religion in the Mycenaean World written by Lisa Maria Bendall and published by Oxford University School of Ar. This book was released on 2007 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mycenaean Linear B tablets include numerous references to religion, such as details of offerings, banqueting foodstuffs or land-tenure relating to cult personnel. While contributing significantly to our understanding of early Greek religion, the documents are exclusively economic and administrative records and the limitations of such sources have long been recognised. Few attempts have been made, however, to analyse the purely economic information about religion we do have in Linear B. Such analysis is essential to understanding the place of religion in Mycenaean palace society. This book asks a simple but important question: What proportion of the resources available to the palaces was directed towards support for religion? Price approx.
