Book excerpt: My Way On My Plate, Part-I, reveals a few of the priceless advanced Yogic techniques that were taught to Ved by the mysterious Himalayan Mountain Man, which are extremely valuable for mankind for their well-being, especially at the present times. What transpired during their weekend stay at Ved’s place in Bhimtal was a life-transforming experience for Yukta and Yamini. Both Yukta and Yamini realized that they were on a sinking ship as far as their lifestyle was concerned - mental stress, anxiety, loss of sleep and depression, etc. were the order of the day for them and life was becoming unbearable for them. Ved revived their lives once again by making simple natural changes and some Yogic techniques that were taught to him by the Mountain man. Yukta, Yamini, and Ved were classmates and childhood friends, till they completed their pre-graduation school and went their separate ways for their higher education. While Yukta and Yamini chased their dreams and spent more than half their life doing that, Ved led a balanced and dynamic life under the guidance of the ‘Mountain man’, giving more importance to his own growth and evolution of the self, instead of chasing materialistic fortunes. The three of them met again in an unexpected manner when attending a seminar in New Delhi, where all three were guest speakers. It was a rare homecoming for both Yukta and Yamini. They decided to make the best use of this unplanned opportunity to catch up on each other’s lives by spending the weekend at Ved’s home in the hilly township of Bhimtal. To know what happened to Yukta and Yamini at Ved’s place, and also to learn about these extremely rare techniques.

Book excerpt: Shawn Green’s career statistics can be found on the backs of baseball cards in shoe boxes across America: 328 home runs, 1,071 RBIs, .282 career batting average, All-Star, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger. . . . But numbers tell only part of the story. His path to success was as grounded in philosophical study as in ballpark wisdom. Striving to find stillness within the rip-roaring scene of Major League Baseball—from screaming fans to national scandals— Green learned to approach the sport with a clear mind. In the tradition of Phil Jackson’s Sacred Hoops, Green shares the secrets to remaining focused both on and off the field, shedding light on a signature approach to living by using his remarkable baseball experiences to exemplify how one can find full awareness, presence, and, ultimately, fulfillment in any endeavor. Following his development from inconsistent rookie to established All-Star to aging veteran, The Way of Baseball illustrates the spiritual practices that enabled him to “bring stillness into the flow of life.” Requiring mastery of perspective and continual management of ego, the game of baseball afforded Green the opportunity to explore his potential as more than just a ballplayer. A treasure of practical wisdom and an intimate look at what it really means to “let go,” The Way of Baseball illuminates the creative possibilities within us all.

Book excerpt: More than 100 simple, Asian-influenced, veggie-forward recipes that crank up the flavor and help you stay healthy and active, from the creator of My Healthy Dish Northern California-based My Nguyen needed nourishing food to keep up with two active toddlers, a demanding job, and a bustling household, but all of the diets she tried were too restrictive and time-consuming. So she stopped counting calories and started to define her own kind of healthy eating. Instead of building her meals around a carb like rice, noodles, or pasta (not totally intuitive for someone raised to believe a big bag of rice is the perfect housewarming gift!), she doubled down on lean proteins, vegetables, and ingredients like fresh herbs and condiments that boosted flavor. Now she shares her pragmatic but playful recipes that look as good as they taste to her millions of fans on her platform, My Healthy Dish. Healthy, My Way offers more than 100 recipes that reflect this upbeat approach to cooking. “My Tips” are sprinkled throughout, offering pragmatic kitchen hacks, substitutions, techniques, and make-ahead notes to help you customize these recipes to your own palate and dietary needs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compelled to seek something more than what modern society has to offer, Robert Sibley turned to an ancient setting for help in recovering what has been lost. The Henro Michi is one of the oldest and most famous pilgrimage routes in Japan. It consists of a circuit of eighty-eight temples around the perimeter of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands. Every henro, or pilgrim, is said to follow in the footsteps of Kōbō Daishi, the ninth-century ascetic who founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Over the course of two months, the author walked this 1,400-kilometer route (roughly 870 miles), visiting the sacred sites and performing their prescribed rituals.Although himself a gaijin, or foreigner, Sibley saw no other pilgrim on the trail who was not Japanese. Some of the people he met became not only close companions but also ardent teachers of the language and culture. These fellow pilgrims’ own stories add to the author’s narrative in unexpected and powerful ways. Sibley’s descriptions of the natural surroundings, the customs and etiquette, the temples and guesthouses will inspire any reader who has longed to escape the confines of everyday life and to embrace the emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of a pilgrimage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Pollak rose through the comedy club ranks at the feet of Don Rickles and Bill Cosby, Johnny Carson and George Carlin. Named one of Comedy Central’s Top 100 Stand-Up Comedians of All Time, he’s a killer impressionist—Falk, Shatner, Walken, Nicholson—a versatile actor with one of the most respected filmographies around, and an Internet pioneer. He’s done it all, and now he’s ready to spill the beans. Ballsy, hilarious, and revealing, How I Slept My Way to the Middle winningly combines never-before-heard stories featuring A-list entertainers with fan favorites and Kevin’s own thoughts about how he made it. He turned down his first invitation to do stand-up on The Tonight Show because he knew that he’d make a bigger impact if he sat on the couch next to Johnny. That huge risk—which paid off in spades—was just the beginning. Find out how he brought John Belushi to his knees, tortured Paul Reiser (twice), bamboozled Larry King, stole Alan Arkin’s soul, almost killed Warren Beatty, and sucked face with Robert DeNiro’s girlfriend. Now a new media entrepreneur, he’s laughing proof that if you follow your gut and believe in yourself, you can do anything you want—except have a rational conversation with Rip Torn, who’s an evil, paranoid $#!%.

Book excerpt: Stephanie Urdang was born in Cape Town, South Africa, into a white, Jewish family staunchly opposed to the apartheid regime. In 1967, at the age of twenty-three, no longer able to tolerate the grotesque iniquities and oppression of apartheid, she chose exile and emigrated to the United States. There she embraced feminism, met anti-apartheid and solidarity movement activists, and encountered a particularly American brand of racial injustice. Urdang also met African revolutionaries such as Amilcar Cabral, who would influence her return to Africa and her subsequent journalism. In 1974, she trekked through the liberation zones of Guinea-Bissau during its war of independence; in the 1980’s, she returned repeatedly to Mozambique and saw how South Africa was fomenting a civil war aimed to destroy the newly independent country. From the vantage point of her activism in the United States, and from her travels in Africa, Urdang tracked and wrote about the slow, inexorable demise of apartheid that led to South Africa’s first democratic elections, when she could finally return home. Urdang’s memoir maps out her quest for the meaning of home and for the lived reality of revolution with empathy, courage, and a keen eye for historical and geographic detail. This is a personal narrative, beautifully told, of a journey traveled by an indefatigable exile who, while yearning for home, continued to question where, as a citizen of both South Africa and the United States, she belongs. “My South Africa!” she writes, on her return in 1991, after the release of Nelson Mandela, “How could I have imagined for one instant that I could return to its beauty, and not its pain?”

Charlie Maitland is like no other man I’ve ever met. Part computer programming nerd, part jazz musician, part doting dog dad, and one hundred percent know-it-all. Talking to him would be infuriating if it weren’t so much fun. At least while we’re arguing, I’m not thinking about how much I want him to kiss me. The problem is: I’m married. Granted, my husband is having an affair with one of our neighbors, but I’m not ready to call it quits. And I’m not going to complicate things up further by having my own affair. And Charlie? He’s too smart to get pulled into my messy situation. So we’re friends. That’s it. That’s all we’re going to be. Anything else would be a disaster...

MacDonald winds these yarns into an interesting account of his long and varied life. Book excerpt: I've used my knowledge and experience both personally and from professionals to put together this self help book. It's a story about my life, my addictions, my struggles, and how I overcame it all, which saved my life. I have a very unique story about how I recovered that I want to share with people, and more specifically those who struggle with themselves. My story can be very helpful for many people in getting their lives back on track. Many of us are on a dark road for so long we lose our identities. We have nothing to look forward to and spiral into despair. That is a dangerous place to be and I have been there far too many times. I am a recovering alcoholic of many years and know how hard it is to find peace and happiness. I hope my story can inspire people to live the lives they deserve regardless of the mess they are in.

The plans for his trip were lean on practical detail, but grand in concept: Visit five World Heritage Sites listed by UNESCO for their historical and cultural significance. Having never set foot in Sénégal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin or Togo, Sihle planned to inform himself about Francophone Africa as he went along. Had he pondered the implications of not speaking French in a part of the world where it is the lingua franca, or what the public transport might be like there, he might have set off less bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. But Sihle is not one to be deterred by setbacks and deadends. His flexibility, irrepressible optimism and robust sense of humour, coupled with an unexpected sensitivity towards his host countries, see him reach all his goals – or almost.
