Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galati Mamertino is a small mountain town nestled in the Nebrodi national park, oozing with history from its very walls: and a small part of that history will come to life in “my country, my people”. Through twenty short stories, rich with vivid characters, intoxicating smells and ancient flavors, the author paints a picture of his youth, cleverly moving between fact and fiction. Reading these pages we hear the fragile voice of the South, a voice suffocated by the numbness born of resignation and sadness, but which at the same time speaks of a love of times gone by, of a poor but sanguine land, exhausted and wounded from the plague of poverty, injustice and emigration but still very much alive in the minds and memories of those who left. And those memories lodge in the mind and settle in the heart as an emotional reservoir overflowing with words, thoughts and images of a moment, a day, an era once lived and still able to touch us deeply.

Book excerpt: This Land is My Land is a historical fictional story about the life and adventures of the soldiers, artisans, and clergy under the leadership of Hidalgo Don Hernando De Soto beginning in the year of 1538 and coming to a tiring end in 1542. The theme illustrates the difficulty of men and women in the first exploration of La Florida and its damaging effects to new lands and the indigenous people who had founded the land many years earlier. It elaborates how exploration is irresistible to human beings and will always have its good and bad outcomes. They begin with about seven hundred and fifty men and women of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds, mostly Portuguese and Spaniard. The route of exploration went through Cuba, 10 states and Mexico ending with about two hundred and twenty-six survivors. The protagonist is the gold and land-seeking explorer and Adelantado Don Hernando De Soto searching for new lands and riches to aid in his own as well as his countries profits. After his death, Luis de Moscoso follows him as the leader to get the remaining explorers safely to the city of Mexico. It does not demonstrate a one sided wrongdoing but the unethical and unfair actions that come about when differently cultivated humans meet. It is not a heartwarming story of great adventures, which leads to a Thanksgiving. It describes the four-year march across the interior of todays southeastern United States based on information the author gathered from translations of four of the original notes and writing of the original company.

The ones that are strongest focus on imagery rather than on message or meaning. You have many wonderful lines about animals and their behavior-about the natural world. Also, the love poems-especially the one about the woman who could not have children-are very moving." --------------- Doctor Jane Sellman, PhD, Professor of English writing, Department of Achievement and Learning Center, University of Baltimore

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the snow-drenched Canadian winter of 1995, poet Mimi Clement succumbs to writer’s block. She will do anything to summon enough faith to get her through another cold, drab day, even if she has to pray for it. Her brother Damon tells her she needs a man, not faith, but he kindly drives her to the airport to begin a pilgrimage. High in the mountains of western México, Mimi finds Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso - Our Lady of Happy Endings. This virgin wears a rosary of skulls carved by an admirer: “memento mori.” Mimi takes it as a sign. For nine days Mimi says her remembered rosary prayers, as she struggles not to forget death. Ignore the sensuous temptations of paradise: memento mori! Tune out the screams of fighting cocks and the rumours of macho abuses: memento mori! Turn a blind eye to the discovery of a lost El Greco masterpiece. Memento mori! There is no better place to look for faith than in the close-up of a new reality.

Book excerpt: The autobiographical essays in The Girls in My Town create an unforgettable portrait of a family in Los Angeles. Reaching back to her grandmother’s childhood and navigating through her own girlhood and on to the present, Angela Morales contemplates moments of loss and longing, truth and beauty, motherhood and daughterhood. She writes about her parents’ appliance store and how she escaped from it, the bowling alley that provided refuge, and the strange and beautiful things she sees while riding her bike in the early mornings. She remembers fighting for equal rights for girls as a sixth grader, calling the cops when her parents fought, and listening with her mother to Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman,” the soundtrack of her parents’ divorce. Poignant, serious, and funny, Morales’s book is both a coming-of-age story and an exploration of how a writer discovers her voice.
