Book excerpt: NOW WITH A NEW CHAPTER AND AN UPDATED RESOURCES SECTION Suicide has touched the lives of nearly half of all Americans, yet it is rarely talked about openly. In her highly acclaimed book, Susan Blauner—a survivor of multiple suicide attempts—offers guidance and hope for those contemplating ending their lives and for their loved ones. “Each word written with thoughtful intent; each story told with the deepest of honesty and humility, and in doing so Blauner puts forward a life-saving book."—Daniel J. Reidenberg, PsyD, Executive Director, Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (www.save.org) “I continued to romanticize my death by suicide: who would find me; what I’d look like. I spent hundreds of hours planning my funeral, imagining the remorse of my family and friends. I wrote good-bye letters, composed wills, and disrupted the lives of everyone close to me. Then reality hit.”—Susan Rose Blauner The statistics on suicide are staggering. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 800,000 people die by suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds, and for each completed suicide there may be twenty or more attempts. In How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying to Kill Me, Susan Blauner is the perfect emissary for a message of hope and a program of action for these millions of people. A survivor of multiple suicide attempts, she explains the complex feelings and fantasies that surround suicidal thoughts. In a direct, nonjudgmental, and loving voice, she offers affirmations and suggestions for those experiencing life-ending thoughts, and for their friends and family. With an introduction by Bernie Siegel, M.D., this important, timely book has now been updated with a revised resources section, and a new chapter on the author’s experiences since the book’s initial publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes life takes its time bringing something of value into plain sight. It took me twenty-nine years to bring this book to a place where I can present it to you with both pride and satisfaction. I am hoping the story Ive shared is one you will find as valuable in your life as it was in mine. The only problem is that my story took its time in me so I could make the necessary changes needed in order for me to find a balance of meaning and peace. This book is a mystery in the way it presents my life to you. Ive been able to use a sense of seriousness mixed with a bizarre sense of comedy. Nothing in this book is what you might expect. About the time you begin to feel sorrowful, I hit you with a note that tells you there is no sorrow in me about what happened, only a sense of victory that Ive been able to make sense of a life that is still unknown to my conscious mind. Ive taken a shovel and dug deeply into my past then explained how I handled myself, both as a child and as the woman I have become. Ive worked to expose the workings of how hard the mind works in order to survive in the healthiest way possible. Ive used every tool at my disposal to retrain my thoughts, behavior, and language in order to break apart habits I developed in order to remain alive. My book is generally the type written by psychiatrists, psychologists, or counselors about patients. In this book, I became my own therapist, being led only by the insight given to me in a yet mysterious and unknown way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Sword and the Pen: Women, Politics, and Poetry in Sixteenth-Century Siena, Konrad Eisenbichler analyzes the work of Sienese women poets, in particular, Aurelia Petrucci, Laudomia Forteguerri, and Virginia Salvi, during the first half of the sixteenth century up to the fall of Siena in 1555. Eisenbichler sets forth a complex and original interpretation of the experiences of these three educated noblewomen and their contributions to contemporary culture in Siena by looking at the emergence of a new lyric tradition and the sonnets they exchanged among themselves and with their male contemporaries. Through the analysis of their poems and various book dedications to them, Eisenbichler reveals the intersection of poetry, politics, and sexuality, as well as the gendered dialogue that characterized Siena's literary environment during the late Renaissance. Eisenbichler also examines other little-known women poets and their relationship to the cultural environment of Siena, underlining the exceptional role of the city of Siena as the most important center of women's writing in the first half of the sixteenth century in Italy, and probably in all of Europe. This innovative contribution to the field of late Renaissance and early modern Italian and women's studies rescues from near oblivion a group of literate women who were celebrated by contemporary scholars but who have been largely ignored today, both because of a dearth of biographical information about them and because of a narrow evaluation of their poetry. Eisenbichler's analysis and reproduction of many of their poems in Italian and modern English translation are an invaluable contribution not only to Italian cultural studies but also to women's studies.

A young woman loses her faith in God and humanity after suffering the tragic deaths of three close people in her life. Embittered by grief and the circumstances of her struggling lot as a server and caregiver for her ailing mother, she aims to change her future through a Faustian bargain with a much older man. Ignoring the moral implications of such a perilous path to success and comfort, she takes her studies abroad to St. Petersburg, Russia, where she attends a university to gain her PhD. When almost in grasp of her goal, Exillien’s soul is tested as tragedy strikes her life again after witnessing the scene of a brutal murder involving her host family. Hoping to escape the trauma of that incident, and refusing to help, she flees to Moscow to resume her studies at another university. Upon landing in her new environment, she is suddenly plagued by a mysterious illness. Stopped in her tracks by fate, she begins to recount the story of her life through soul-baring letters to a man with whom she has fallen hopelessly in love. Through deep introspection, she reveals the tragic events that closed her heart against the Lord and her fellow man, along with her innermost secrets. Grappling with vertigo and her newfound fragility by herself in the busy city of Moscow, she finds empathy in her encounters with the Russian people with whom she develops an enduring kinship. Her spiritual awakening and redemption come when she finds the courage to face her fears and transcends her impossible love. Cleansed by Christ’s compassion and a new vision, the beauty of her soul is revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a circus-performer-turned-PI is drawn into the occult underworld, the result is “beautifully plotted and assured” (#1 New York Times–bestselling author Peter Straub). With a genius IQ, a past career as a circus acrobat, and a black belt in karate, criminology professor Dr. Robert Frederickson—better known as “Mongo the Magnificent”—has a decidedly unusual background for a private investigator. He also just so happens to be a dwarf. Mongo needs all his faculties when he’s hired to investigate a fellow professor who’s been experimenting with sensory deprivation. Soon after, a nun asks him to help clear a psychic of murder. And then, weirdest of all, his seven-year-old neighbor, Kathy, begs him to locate her father’s “Book of Shadows.” When Mongo finds Kathy’s father dead from what seems to be a ritual sacrifice—and the little girl lying comatose nearby—the distressed detective follows a trail of occult clues and discovers that all three of his cases are tied to something wicked. Now, to save Kathy from an unnatural end, Mongo will risk it all to separate the facts from something even stranger than fiction. An Affair of Sorcerers is the 3rd book in the Mongo Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order. “Beautifully plotted and assured . . . The work of a master.” —#1 New York Times–bestselling author Peter Straub
