They sent him also an account of the situation of all the boys, as far as they could obtain it; and the result was, that every one who had been under his tuition was brought forward, and able to provide for himself, and the far greater num ber in highly respectable stations, doing well and filling situations in life, said one of these grateful men, which your unwearied labour and the system of education you followed, could only have enabled them to fill with so much credit toif themselves. Well might Dr. Bell say, that the very conception of such an address might be deemed no common specimen of the effects of the Madras system. The reader has heard what the character of these half-cast children was, and he sees here how perfectly Dr. Bell accomplished his purpose of mak ing them good scholars, good men, and good'f. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of National Education There can be no doubt that the Educational System of Europe is a great advance on the many methods of antiquity, but its defects are also palpable. It is based on an in sufficient knowledge of human psycho logy and it is only safeguarded in Europe from disastrous results by the refusal of the ordinary student to subject himself to the processes it involves, his habit of studying only so much as he must to avoid punishment or to pass an immediate test, his resort to active habits and vigorous physical exercise. In India the disas trous effects of the system on body, mind and character are only too appa rent. The first problem in a National System of Education is to give an Education as comprehensive as the European and more thorough, with out the evils of strain and cramming. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete System of Education: A Lecture Delivered Before the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, January 19, 1853 Laws for the promotion of education will undoubtedly, if wisely made, be of great, of incalculable benefit to the whole community, through their direct action, and of still greater advantage through that which is indirect; and I now propose to suggest what it seems to me, would be a true and com plete system of education for the benefit, and by the means and resources of the Commonwealth, and to urge some argu ments to show the importance of the object, and the duty which devolves on the government of the Commonwealth to carry into execution such scheme of general education as shall appear to it most comprehensive and useful. The present educational plans of Massachusetts embrace nothing more than the Common school for children, and the Normal school for the teachers. Nothing is taught, under the auspices of the Commonwealth, but the absolute neces sities of intellectual life; those elements which may ena ble the child of a poor man, if endowed with an ardent genius, to educate himself imperfectly in after life, or the son of a rich man to move on more rapidly, under the guidance of such instructors as may be procured for him by a liberal expenditure. The acquisition of knowledge, the discipline of the mind which is the best result of the best education, is not a task so soon or so easily finished. The road is steep, difficult, abounding with obstacles, interminable. And shall the State, the common mother, content herself with standing at its very entrance, just holding the gate open, and saying En ter, my children, this is the road to eminence - climb up these first hills, and you will have a splendid view of moun tains upon mountains beyond, which you may ascend if you like, and which you must climb if you mean to reach a really lofty position? The great and almost the sole aim of the mother, to whom the, infancy of life is ne cessarily entrusted, is to keep the child out of the way of bodily injury, and to secure, by every means, immediate submission to her com mands. The authority which is thus preserved, is principally that of 'the passions. It oscillates between anger and indulgence: or, when neither the one nor the other of these may be employed, it leaves the infant uncontrolled, to adopt any mode of feeling or action, which the natural disposition may give life to, or circumstances suggest. When the parent is weary of the trouble which thus devolves upon her. She seeks relief, by sending her infant children to the re sidence of a dame, who is contented, for a small remuneration, to hold a contest with the passions of the young, and, by whatever means. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Education in Modern Times More striking characteristics of the book will probably be found in the emphasis laid upon educational institu tions and practices, rather than upon theoretical develop ment; and in the larger place given to American educa tion. The account of each educational movement has included at least an attempt to trace its in uence upon the content, method, and organization Of education in this country, while three chapters have been devoted exclusively to the rise of our educational system. For this somewhat special point of View, I trust that no apology is needed, as the book is intended primarily for use in the United States, and will be of service to our teachers largely as it succeeds in focusing the educational progress of this country. It will be quite possible, however, for those readers in England and other coun tries, who have been so hospitable in their reception of my former works, to neglect or curtail these parts of the book, and still have a body of material sufficient to represent satisfactorily the history of education during the past two centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Education: Or Strictures on the Nature, Necessity,& Practicability of a System of National Education, Suited to the United States Rev. and Dear Sir: It affords me much pleasure to know that you are about to publish your work on education, the substance of which you did me the honour to submit to me in manuscript, two or three years ago. The work, I am persuaded, will need no recommendation to the thoughtful reader beyond the matter it contains. As, however, some friends of the great cause you advocate have requested an introduction from my pen, my deep interest in the subject will not allow me to refuse my humble aid in its support. Were you as extensively and favourably known here as you are in the field of your past labours, you would need no introduction. Devoted for many years to the work of instruction, bringing to it the enthusiasm of a mind deeply impressed with its importance, and eminently successful in your past efforts, I think you have acquired a right to speak upon a subject to which you have devoted so much thought and observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of a System of National Education Education is systematic, and is a science or an art, as it refers to principles or their applica tion. Systematic education is the development of some, or all man's powers, for the attainment of a special or a general end. The former may be styled partial, or sometimes professional; the latter, general education. General education has for its object, the for mation of a rational character, i. E., one whose powers (fully developed) and actions are under the rule and guidance of a rational will. All partial and professional, must therefore be sub ordinate to, though it may accompany and even forward general, education. Every one is anxious to get on in the world, and recognizes that knowledge is power. The modern system of written examinations tends to a wrong idea of education. Unfor tunately character has no value in deciding whether or not a candi date is to pass an examination. The boy who fails in algebra may be debarred from matriculation, even though his principles are good. On the other hand, 'one who has not sufficient will power to abstain from the use of cigars may be admitted to the university by barely making one-third of the marks in each subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why we need to stop wasting public funds on education Despite being immensely popular—and immensely lucrative—education is grossly overrated. Now with a new afterword by Bryan Caplan, this explosive book argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students' skills but to signal the qualities of a good employee. Learn why students hunt for easy As only to forget most of what they learn after the final exam, why decades of growing access to education have not resulted in better jobs for average workers, how employers reward workers for costly schooling they rarely ever use, and why cutting education spending is the best remedy. Romantic notions about education being "good for the soul" must yield to careful research and common sense—The Case against Education points the way.
