Book excerpt: Captain William Parker's autobiography provides a unique insight into the United States Navy of the mid-19th century during an era when the Age of the Sail was coming to an end and the advent of steam power and ironclads was beginning. He entered the U.S. navy as a midshipman on the 19th day of October, 1841, being then fourteen years of age, on a ship under Commodore Perry. It is also the story of a man who served two governments in his career. In this witty, articulate memoir, Parker tells the good and the bad about the convulsion that tore the country apart in the American Civil War. At the end of the war, he was only 38 years old but out of a job, as he had lent his talents to the Confederacy. This long forgotten work is a pleasure to read for anyone interested in the Civil War and the changing times during the mid 19th century. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viet Nam veteran S. Brian Willson was so shocked by the diabolical nature of the US war against Viet Nam -- irreversible knowledge, as he describes it -- and his own appalling ignorance from his cultural conditioning, that it sparked a lifetime of anti-war activism. This toxic jolt awakened him to the extent to which he and generations of American citizens had thoughtlessly succumbed to the relentless barrage of lies and propaganda that infest US American culture—from the military and political parties to religious institutions, academic and educational institutions, sports, fraternal and professional associations, the scientific community, the economic system, and all our entertainment—that seek to rationalize its otherwise inexplicable and morally repulsive behavior globally and at home. US American history reveals a unifying theme: prosperity for a few through expansion at any cost, to preserve the “exceptional” American Way of Life (AWOL). This has been structurally guided and facilitated by our nation’s founding documents, including the US Constitution. From the beginning, the US was envisaged as a White male supremacist state serving to protect and advance the interests of private and commercial property. The US-waged war in Viet Nam was not an aberration, but one of hundreds in a long pattern of brutal exploitation. A quick review of the empirical record reveals close to 600 overt military interventions by the US into dozens of countries since 1798, almost 400 since the end of World War II alone, and thousands of covert interventions since 1947. This history overwhelms any rhetoric about the United States as a beacon of freedom and democracy, committed to promoting domestic and global equal justice under law. These interventions have assured de facto subsidies for US American interests, regulated global markets on our terms, and provided us with access to cheap or free labor and to raw materials. Millions of people around the globe have been murdered with virtual impunity as a result of our interventions in a pattern that illustrates what Noam Chomsky calls the “Fifth Freedom”—the freedom to rob and exploit. This freedom is ultimately protected with use of force when a country or movement seeks to protect or advance the domestic needs and desires of its members or citizens for political freedom or economic wellbeing. This book provides an invaluable tool for today’s activists, however they may be similarly shocked into wakefulness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A newly-minted West Point lieutenant in 1876, he requested posting to George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry just days after the general's death at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He accompanied the brother of General Philip Sheridan to recover the remains of Custer and the other officers from the battlefield at the Little Bighorn in 1877. He met and befriended most of the important Plains Indians as well as figures like Buffalo Bill Cody, General Phil Sheridan, Frederick Remington, and others. He met "the idol of the 7th Cavalry," Captain Frederick Benteen, modeled his own style of command after Benteen, and remained friends with him until the latter's death. Fluent in Indian sign language, a true friend to Native Americans, probably no white man of his time was better at communicating with and gaining the trust of the tribes with which he worked than Hugh Lenox Scott. During his time in the west, he more than once turned down assignments to more desirable posts to remain working with the tribes. Of his fellow white citizens, he wrote: "...there is an inborn racial fear of the Indian in our minds, due to our ignorance of his thought, enhanced by the tales of scalping and bloodshed we were fed on in our youth." Many times, Scott put himself at great risk to avoid bloodshed between whites and Indians. This fascinating, exciting, and extremely important memoir is one that every student of American history should own and read repeatedly. Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the movement that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The unapologetic, laugh-your-ass-off military memoir both vets and civilians have been waiting for, from a five-tour Army Ranger turned YouTube phenomenon and zealous advocate for veterans Members of the military’s special operations branches share a closely guarded secret: They love their jobs. They relish the opportunity to fight. They are thankful for it, even, and hopeful that maybe, possibly, they’ll also get to kill a bunch of bad guys while they’re at it. You don’t necessarily need to thank them for their service—the pleasure is all theirs. In this hilarious and personal memoir, readers ride shotgun alongside former Army Ranger and private military contractor and current social media phenomenon Mat Best, into the action and its aftermath, both abroad and at home. From surviving a skin infection in the swampy armpit of America (aka Columbus, Georgia) to kicking down doors on the outskirts of Ramadi, from blowing up a truck full of enemy combatants to witnessing the effects of a suicide bombing right in front of your face, Thank You for My Service gives readers who love America and love the good guys fresh insight into what it’s really like inside the minds of the men and women on the front lines. It’s also a sobering yet steadying glimpse at life for veterans after the fighting stops, when the enemy becomes self-doubt or despair and you begin to wonder why anyone should be thanking you for anything, least of all your service. How do you keep going when something you love turns you into somebody you hate? For veterans and their friends and families, Thank You for My Service will offer comfort, in the form of a million laughs, and counsel, as a blueprint for what to do after the war ends and the real fight begins. And for civilians, this is the insider account of military life you won’t find anywhere else, told with equal amounts of heart and balls. It’s Deadpool meets Captain America, except one went to business school and one went to therapy, and it’s anyone’s guess which is which.

Book excerpt: In 1995, Robert G. Mason has a successful quadruple bypass. Freed from the worry that a major heart attack is lurking around the corner, Mason has a new lease on life-and a sobering acceptance of his own mortality. He realizes that his World War II mementos will not mean anything after he dies and thus sets out to tell the stories behind them. Serving in the American occupation of Japan at the end of the war, Mason witnessed a host of incredible, and sometimes entertaining, experiences. In this memoir, Mason describes Birdlegs, a vindictive Army nurse who learns the hard way to care about and respect the wounded. Mason entertains with the story of a pregnant Japanese prostitute who embarrasses a United States company commander. And he reminisces about how a Japanese general, convicted of wartime atrocities, helps him cope with medical trauma. Mason's army experience changed his life. In this vivid memoir, he recounts the incidents that chronicle the two years of military service that transformed him from an immature nineteen-year-old kid into a twenty-one-year-old adult.

Only Kevin OSullivan saw active service. He describes the shock and the violence of ambushing terrorists while on patrol in Malaya. Michael Crowe in the navy visited more places than anyone and Barry Brown spent eighteen months in multi-cultural and vibrant West Africa travelling in Nigeria and the Gold Coast (Ghana). We all describe varying frustrations with the Services, which we responded to with cynicism and humour. But we all agree that it was an interesting and enjoyable experience and David Russell speaks for all of us when he writes that his understanding of the human condition was broadened enormously.
