Book excerpt: An account of the Morman family history is described in four chapters beginning with a collection of over 70 photographs of original family members, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. One photograph of the parents dates back to 1912 the year of their marriage. Chapter 2 describes the parents, Joseph and Julia Morman (Murman) originally from Austria, their children and pertinent events in narrative and poetic detail. Certain descriptions of family member are perhaps lengthy simply because more information was available. Chapter 3 continues the narrative and versified description of the Morman grandchildren, their children and the great, great grandchildren. The last Chapter, 4, consists of two poems...the first relating to the short interlude on earth called "Life and Stuff." The second poem, "Lifespan Functions A Chronology" uniquely describes life's most important functions in single words or short phrases...all ending in …ation.

Full of writing, drawing, and creativity prompts, I Love Science inspires kids (and adults) of all ages to fill the pages with ideas, self-exploration, and big dreams for the future. Opening with a short reference section that contains basic equations, the periodic table, basic HTML codes, and a measurement converter, the journal then invites the user to write and dream through writing prompts like, "What is a challenge you've overcome recently?" The journal also includes inspirational quotes from notable women who've achieved greatness in the science, technology, mathematics, and engineering (STEM) fields, such as famous primatologist Jane Goodall's, "Only when our clever brain and our human heart work together can we reach our full potential." With illustrations, quotes, and nifty science infographics, this journal will encourage you to ponder the world through tinkering, discovering, doodling, and more

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not since the printing press has a media object been as celebrated for its role in the advancement of knowledge as the scientific journal. From open communication to peer review, the scientific journal has long been central both to the identity of academic scientists and to the public legitimacy of scientific knowledge. But that was not always the case. At the dawn of the nineteenth century, academies and societies dominated elite study of the natural world. Journals were a relatively marginal feature of this world, and sometimes even an object of outright suspicion. The Scientific Journal tells the story of how that changed. Alex Csiszar takes readers deep into nineteenth-century London and Paris, where savants struggled to reshape scientific life in the light of rapidly changing political mores and the growing importance of the press in public life. The scientific journal did not arise as a natural solution to the problem of communicating scientific discoveries. Rather, as Csiszar shows, its dominance was a hard-won compromise born of political exigencies, shifting epistemic values, intellectual property debates, and the demands of commerce. Many of the tensions and problems that plague scholarly publishing today are rooted in these tangled beginnings. As we seek to make sense of our own moment of intense experimentation in publishing platforms, peer review, and information curation, Csiszar argues powerfully that a better understanding of the journal’s past will be crucial to imagining future forms for the expression and organization of knowledge.

Book excerpt: One of the key tasks every researcher must perform is publishing their work, and most of this publication will occur in peer-reviewed journals. These publications are essential for promotion, recognition, and creating a dialogue with your colleagues around the world. Unfortunately, writing publication-quality manuscripts and guiding them through the peer-review process is a difficult, time-consuming, and often frustrating task. In this book, I'll teach you how to make the process easier based on what I've learned from more than 25 years of helping authors publish more than 6000 papers in some of the world's most prestigious journals (including Nature, Science, and PNAS). Writing for Science Journals explains the details of every section of a journal manuscript, including tips and tricks you won't find elsewhere about how to deal with the peculiar ways that journals work with authors and reviewers. I'll also deal with some of the implications of statistics and experimental design that you may have learned in school, but possibly not in an integrated form that guides you through the steps necessary to perform publishable research. In each chapter, I'll provide a list of key points that you can use as the basis for developing a learning plan. I've also provided links to relevant online resources via a Links page that is available only to purchasers of the book, and an errata and additions page (see below) that will provide a forum for expanding on the book until the 2nd edition is available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making "Nature" is the first book to chronicle the foundation and development of Nature, one of the world's most influential scientific institutions. Now nearing its hundred and fiftieth year of publication, Nature is the international benchmark for scientific publication. Its contributors include Charles Darwin, Ernest Rutherford, and Stephen Hawking, and it has published many of the most important discoveries in the history of science, including articles on the structure of DNA, the discovery of the neutron, the first cloning of a mammal, and the human genome. But how did Nature become such an essential institution? In Making "Nature," Melinda Baldwin charts the rich history of this extraordinary publication from its foundation in 1869 to current debates about online publishing and open access. This pioneering study not only tells Nature's story but also sheds light on much larger questions about the history of science publishing, changes in scientific communication, and shifting notions of "scientific community." Nature, as Baldwin demonstrates, helped define what science is and what it means to be a scientist.

This Investigation Journal is designed to teach kids the SCIENTIFIC METHOD. Use this journal with students and kids conducting experiments. As they fill out the boxes, students will get a better understanding of the scientific method. The process of the scientific method involves making conjectures (hypotheses), deriving predictions from them as logical consequences, and then carrying out experiments or empirical observations based on those predictions. Students are guided step-by-step through the process of choosing a scientific topic, conducting broad research, completing a specific experiment, and finding a conclusion.
