It describes my school years in Catholic institutions and the problems faced by immigrants at that time. It details how a God-ordained event in year nine saw me progress from near bottom of the class to near top. How I gained a Commonwealth scholarship with no plans to attend tertiary education. It showed that with God’s guidance and against all odds, I eventually obtained a PhD in science and ended up doing research in academic medical hospitals. The journey also describes my falling away from Christianity and my eventual return to God in Christ months later through a Pauline like experience. It tells of my God-directed growth and inspiration in various areas of medical research. It also describes a parallel growth in my Christian spirituality. The book details how my scientific and biblical knowledge dovetail perfectly.

Book excerpt: My Search for Truth Personal Stories of Inspiration, Mediumship, Reincarnation and Ghosts Jo Kelly My Search for Truth is an autobiographical account of the many divers roads and occupations taken by the author in her search for truth and the meaning of life. She encountered many strange and unexplained happenings along the way and was gradually remodeled into a more caring and considerate human being. This quest eventually brought her to an unswerving belief in God. Jo Kelly's hope is that this book will serve as a guide for all people who are in search of their dreams, whatever they may be. Endorsements "It has been my privilege to be closely associated with Jo as she tirelessly pursued her lifelong quest for Truth. Jo's inborn curiosity and her tenacious search for answers have led her to some interesting and colourful life experiences which she is eager to share with receptive readers. The events of her life as described in this book have collectively contributed to a limited but gratifying degree of enlightenment; she is encouraged and motivated. The "Quest for Truth" continues-the journey never ends..." Olive Cerny, Pacifica, California "What a privilege it was for me to read Jo Kelly's book. It is very insightful of an amazing life. The book is both informative and inspiring, full of energy and vigour." Shirley Hughes, chaplain "I have read Jo's book and can see it has been cathartic for her to write about her life. Her personal spiritual journey can be repetitious and tedious at times, but also relevant to the title of the book, her search for truth, especially the chapters relating to her spirituality and belief in God." Anne Worrall "We have both known Jo for quite a number of years and have always found Jo to be a down-to-earth type of person. This book will inspire all who are on their own quest in life and who seek the truth of the meaning of life. Easy to read and a definitive search of the true meaning of this our physical life as human beings. Inspiring and positive for the individual who has many up/downs in life and is seeking answers." Berry & Fred Kent "I have known Jo Kelly for some years. When I read the manuscript, I felt I only knew a small part of her life. It is a good, easy book to read, and the chapters are not too long and contain lots of interesting details." Marie Barnes "Having known Jo for the last 30/35 yrs, whilst reading her book, I could sense her feeling of achievement and hear her chuckle at the different stages in her life of which I knew nothing. I knew Jo as a very experienced nurse, and with a love of horses. She also had a keen interest in religion, especially Spiritualism, as she was very aware of an after-life and the guidance she received. A pleasant book to read which makes you think back on the paths of life which you have taken." Marjorie Stoba, Cheshire ISBN: 987-1-57733-270-1

Book excerpt: Learn to celebrate your body by attending to daily spiritual practices In Honoring the Body, Stephanie Paulsell speaks to those who have ever wondered how to celebrate the body's pleasures and protect the body's vulnerabilities in a world that seems confused about both. What we need, she shows, are practices that honor the body. Paulsell invites readers to explore how we might honor the body in daily activities--bathing, clothing, eating, working, exercising, loving, and suffering--seeking wisdom from Scripture, history, and contemporary experience, in story and song and poetry. She argues that the accumulated wisdom of religious traditions provides the resources for a rich practice of honoring the body. This practice will not be just an individual practice, however. It will be a shared, communal practice, one we engage in with others. Honoring the Body is for those who want to honor their body and the bodies of others, who wish for a community that cherishes, attends to, celebrates, and soothes the body.

Book excerpt: Karl Barth’s famous account of the doctrine of election in his mammoth Dogmatics has been described as the heart of his theology—a great hymn to the grace of God in Christ. Discover the person who initially stimulated Barth’s mammoth reworking of the “classical” view of the doctrine—pastor/theologian Pierre Maury (1890–1956). Their close friendship and especially a seminal paper Maury gave in 1936 entitled “Election and Faith” helped stimulate Barth’s reflection. Discover some never-before-translated works of Maury as well as a revision of a previously published piece on predestination. In this revised and expanded second edition, seven theologians reflect on the significance of these works for us today from historical, textual, pastoral, and theological standpoints, and seek to draw conclusions for us in our contemporary setting.

Starting in late 2002. In that time I have seen a great many Christians from all around the nation in many different situations. I had what I thought Christians were like and what they did and didn't do. But quickly found out that Christians didn't always act the way they should or knew one thing really well, but not another. Things I've seen that repeated over and over again, in many situations. It's not like you can go up to someone and tell them what they are doing very easily. I felt it was better for me to write about what I have seen and what should be. I have also written in this book about my personal struggles to attain godliness. I view dying to self as a continual process, and that one has never fully arrived; there are many veils peeled away in due process. I believe that there are still levels of maturity that are not even attained yet. I felt I could fully say what I would like all Christians to hear. This is my portion, and it is incomplete, because everybody has a piece to the puzzle. "We need to have humility to take our pieces and to put them together"(paraphrased Rick Joyner). I'm not the all in all who knows all things, I'm not perfect. I am not an intense person, so I try to say things in such a way to try to not offend, but on the other side, I feel that the truth needs to be said. I think we often overlook the simple things Jesus said in the gospels, many things that we often forget about. This book was written in spurts all around the nation over a period of about 15 years. If you want to know what the book is about, the easiest way is to go through the chapters list (topics). Book excerpt: “River of Fire is Sister Helen’s story leading up to her acclaimed book Dead Man Walking—it is thought-provoking, informative, and inspiring. Read it and it will set your heart ablaze!”—Mark Shriver, author of Pilgrimage: My Search for the Real Pope Francis The nation’s foremost leader in efforts to abolish the death penalty shares the story of her growth as a spiritual leader, speaks out about the challenges of the Catholic Church, and shows that joy and religion are not mutually exclusive. Sister Helen Prejean’s work as an activist nun, campaigning to educate Americans about the inhumanity of the death penalty, is known to millions worldwide. Less widely known is the evolution of her spiritual journey from praying for God to solve the world’s problems to engaging full-tilt in working to transform societal injustices. Sister Helen grew up in a well-off Baton Rouge family that still employed black servants. She joined the Sisters of St. Joseph at the age of eighteen and was in her forties when she had an awakening that her life’s work was to immerse herself in the struggle of poor people forced to live on the margins of society. Sister Helen writes about the relationships with friends, fellow nuns, and mentors who have shaped her over the years. In this honest and fiercely open account, she writes about her close friendship with a priest, intent on marrying her, that challenged her vocation in the “new territory of the heart.” The final page of River of Fire ends with the opening page of Dead Man Walking, when she was first invited to correspond with a man on Louisiana’s death row. River of Fire is a book for anyone interested in journeys of faith and spirituality, doubt and belief, and “catching on fire” to purpose and passion. It is a book, written in accessible, luminous prose, about how to live a spiritual life that is wide awake to the sufferings and creative opportunities of our world. “Prejean chronicles the compelling, sometimes-difficult journey to the heart of her soul and faith with wit, honesty, and intelligence. A refreshingly intimate memoir of a life in faith.”—Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: Life is full of challenges, both big and small. Spirituality is here to offer solutions. Over the course of his career as physician, teacher, and bestselling author, Deepak Chopra has received thousands of questions from people facing every kind of challenge. They have asked how to lead more fulfilling lives, how to overcome relationship problems and personal obstacles. What’s the best way to deal with a passive-aggressive friend? Can a stagnant career be jump-started? In a world full of distractions and stress, how does one find time for meditation? Hidden among all of these questions are answers waiting to be uncovered. In this groundbreaking book, Chopra shows you how to expand your awareness, which is the key to the confusion and conflict we all face. “The secret is that the level of the problem is never the level of the solution,” he writes. By rising to the level of the solution in your own awareness, you can transform obstacles into opportunities. Chopra leads the reader to what he calls “the true self,” where peace, clarity, and wisdom serve as guides in times of crisis. For Chopra, spirituality is primarily about consciousness, not about religious dogma or relying on the conventional notion of God. “There is no greater power for success and personal growth than your own awareness.” With practical insight, Spiritual Solutions provides the tools and strategies to enable you to meet life’s challenges from within and to experience a sense of genuine fulfillment and purpose.
