Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of the history of interpretation of Song of Songs focus on its interpretation from late antiquity to modernity. In My Perfect One, Jonathan Kaplan examines earlier rabbinic interpretation of this work by investigating an underappreciated collection of works of rabbinic literature from the first few centuries of the Common Era, known as the tannaitic midrashim. In a departure from earlier scholarship that too quickly classified rabbinic interpretation of Song of Songs as allegorical, Kaplan advocates a more nuanced reading of the approach of the early sages, who read Song of Songs through a mode of typological interpretation concerned with the correspondence between Scripture and ideal events in Israel's history. Throughout the book Kaplan explores ways in which this portrayal helped shape a model vision of rabbinic piety as well as of an idealized vision of their beloved, God, in the wake of the destruction, dislocation, and loss the Jewish community experienced in the first two centuries of the Common Era. The archetypal and idealized language of Song of Songs provided, as Kaplan argues, a textual landscape in which to imagine an idyllic construction of Israel's relationship to her beloved, marked by mutual devotion and fidelity. Through this approach to Song of Songs, the Tannaim helped lay the foundations for later Jewish thought of a robust theology of intimacy in God's relationship with the Jewish people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of the history of interpretation of the Song of Songs focus on its interpretation from late antiquity to modernity. InMy Perfect One, Kaplan maps the landscape of earlier rabinnic interpretation by investigating an underappreciated collection of interpretations of the Book found in rabbinic or Tannaitic literature from the first few centuries of the Common Era, known as the Halachic Midrashim. Kaplan advances two major claims: First, in a departure from earlier scholarship that too quickly classifies rabbinic interpretation of the Song of Songs as allegorical, he advocates a more nuanced reading of the approach of the early sages, who read the Song through a mode of typological interpretation concerned with the correspondence between Scripture and ideal events in history. Second, Kaplan contends that the early rabbinic approach to the text analyzes it using strategies similar to those used in reading epic poetry in antiquity. Throughout the book Kaplan explores ways in which this portrayal helped shape early rabbinic piety in the wake of the destruction, dislocation, and loss the Jewish community in the first two centuries of the Common Era, and how it provided the language to convey an important rabbinic theological idea--that despite the catastrophes of 70 C.E. and 135 C.E., God still loves Israel in a surpassing way and will right the catastrophe in his own time.

Book excerpt: America's foremost scholar on formative Judaism examines the issue of gender as it appears in the corpus of rabbinic literature and arrives at some provocative conclusions. While the structure of Judaism based on the dual Torah is clearly masculine in orientation, the substructure--the religious system that shapes its values and perception--is androgynous, an individual conjunction of genders. In fact, the higher values, as defined by the relevant writings, prove to be feminine.

Book excerpt: This theological commentary to the Rabbinic Midrash explores a simple proposition, in three parts. I. The reading of Scripture by principal parts of the Rabbinic Midrash is formed by compositions and composites that are animated by a cogent theological system. II. These primary components of the Midrash-compilations, further, are in part aimed at systematic demonstrations of theorems of a theological character. III. While forming a principal part of a large theological structure and system, each document is unique. This commentary in its concluding chapter presents what is common to the animating theology of Rabbinic Judaism in all its documentary components and what is unique to Song of Songs Rabbah.

Kabbalah is an esoteric method, discipline, and school of thought in Jewish mysticism. It is a set of esoteric teachings meant to explain the relationship between the unchanging, eternal God–the mysterious Ein Sof ("The Infinite")–and the mortal, finite universe (God's creation). It forms the foundation of mystical religious interpretations within Judaism. Historically, Kabbalah emerged from earlier forms of Jewish mysticism, in 12th- to 13th-century Spain and Southern France, and was reinterpreted during the Jewish mystical renaissance in 16th-century Ottoman Palestine. Jewish Kabbalists originally developed their own transmission of sacred texts within the realm of Jewish tradition. The Kabbalah Unveiled includes translations and commentaries of the books of Zohar: The Book of Concealed Mystery; The Greater Holy Assembly; and The Lesser Holy Assembly.

"Sefer Yetzirah" or, The Book of Creation" is one of primary sources of Kabbalistic teaching. "The Sepher Ha-Zohar" or, The Book of Light – Zohar, or Splendor is the most important text of Kabbalah, at times achieving even canonical status as part of Oral Torah. It is a mystical commentary on the Torah. "Jewish Mysticism" by J. Abelson gives Kabbalah the historical context and presents it as a product of the development of Jewish mystical thought. "The Kabbalah Unveiled" by S. L. MacGregor Mathers presents the translations and commentaries of the books of Zohar: The Book of Concealed Mystery; The Greater Holy Assembly; and The Lesser Holy Assembly.

Book excerpt: The only true and unedited telling of the life of Christ—his life and times, in historical context, but not lacking the psychology behind his physical being and spirit. Unlike other books seeking to strip Jesus' story to reveal only the human being, Romano Guardini's The Lord gives the complete story of Jesus Christ—as man, Holy Ghost, and Creator. Pope Benedict XVI lauds Guardini's work as providing a full understanding of the Son of God, away from the prejudice that rationality engenders. Put long-held myths aside and discover the entire truth about God's only begotten Son.
