Mom pushed her on forward. I was just looking at them both. Half of the man’s face was bruised. Dried-up bloodstains were all over his neck and down from his head. You could not see the rest of his body as it was covered under the sheets. I gripped Nastaran’s hand. “He is asleep; do you want to wake him up?” “Shut up.” The man’s face was shaved, and there were tubes in his mouth and nose. This man was not my father. Nastaran cried nonstop. I could hear Mom’s breathing and her cries too. I felt so sorry for this man. Nastaran put her head on the sheet covering the man’s hands and continued her crying. I was like a wooden stick standing next to him and looking. All the hospital equipment seemed scarier than the dead man’s face. His skin was as white as a ghost, and his cheekbones were standing out. With puffed eyes and a half-open mouth, he was asleep and was snoring like a baby.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examineshow surrealism enriches our understanding of Stein’s writing through its poetics of oppositions Gertrude Stein’s Surrealist Years brings to life Stein’s surrealist sensibilities and personal values borne from her WWII anxieties, not least of which originated in a dread of anti-Semitism. Stein’s earlier works such as Tender Buttons and Lucy Church Amiably tend to prioritize formal innovations over narrative-building and overt political motifs. However, Ery Shin argues that Stein’s later works engage more with storytelling and life-writing in startling ways—most emphatically and poignantly through the surrealist lens. Beginning with The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and continuing in later works, Stein renders legible her war-torn era’s jarring dystopian energies through narratives filled with hallucinatory visions, teleportation, extreme coincidences, action reversals, doppelgangers, dream sequences spanning both sleeping and waking states, and great whiffs of the occult. Such surrealist gestures are predicated on Stein’s return to the independent clause and, by extension, to plot, characterization, and anecdotes. By summoning the marvelous in a historically situated world, Stein joins her surrealist contemporaries in their own ambivalent crusade on behalf of historiography. Besides illuminating Stein’s art and life, the surrealist framework developed here brings readers deeper into those philosophical ideas invoked by war. Topics of discussion emphasize how varied Jewish experiences were in Hitler’s Europe, how outliers like Stein can be included in the surrealist project, surrealism’s theoretical bind in the face of WWII, and the age-old question of artistic legacy.

Book Synopsis Alien Daughters Walk Into the Sun by : Jackie Wang
Download or read book Alien Daughters Walk Into the Sun written by Jackie Wang and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early writings of renowned poet and critical theorist Jackie Wang, drawn from her early zines, indie-lit crit, and prolific early 2000s blog. Compiled as a field guide, travelogue, essay collection, and weather report, Alien Daughters Walk into the Sun traces Jackie Wang’s trajectory from hard femme to Harvard, from dumpster dives and highway bike rides to dropping out of an MFA program, becoming a National Book Award finalist, and writing her trenchant book Carceral Capitalism. Alien Daughters charts the dream-seeking misadventures of an “odd girl” from Florida who emerged from punk houses and early Tumblr to become the powerful writer she is today. Anarchic and beautifully personal, Alien Daughters is a strange intellectual autobiography that demonstrates Wang’s singular self-education: an early life lived where every day and every written word began like the Tarot’s Fool, with a leap of faith.
