If you love music, are a budding songwriter, musician, or just love music, I hope to entertain you at a minimum but may also help inspire you to write your own song. Songwriting is an art and science. I will focus on the art because the science part is way too mathematical for me. There are people that write songs by using "formulas" but I am not one of them. I am an artist in the most loosely interpreted definition of artist. I am actually just a guy that loves music, plays a bit of guitar, has a way with words, has written hundreds of songs, and has recorded a number of them for consumption. I have never written a hit song but unless you write a song you will never have a shot at a hit.I have read many books about songwriting and songwriters like McCartney/Lennon and Jaggar/Richards finding one thread of commonality; there is no best way to write songs. People that say there is a "formula" to write songs miss the point of writing songs. There is no formula you can use that connects your heart, mind and musical instrument of choice to the final product; your song. Songs come from the strangest places and you never know when inspiration will strike. Actually I just lied a bit. One thing some of the greatest song writers say about their best songs is they were more of a conduit for the song than the creator. For those of you that write songs you know what I am saying here. For those of you that have never written a song it can only be explained by saying it's like you're playing an instrument and the chords and words just come out so easily and they flow so well together it's like you're possessed.Writing songs is inspiring, frustrating, easy, and difficult; all in one. I have written 5 books and I think writing books is similar to writing songs but without the added difficulty of applying the words to music. Words in a book must flow but rhyme is not as necessary although beautiful when accomplished. Songwriting can be completed in one quick sprint. Book writing takes a marathon mindset and can often be interrupted by everything else in life. The thing that interrupts me most in book writing is too much thinking. If you think too much about writing it is difficult to stay motivated. Songwriting on the other hand can go from inspiration to product in minutes. It is one of the greatest feelings in the world when you have the seedling of a song, whether it's a chord progression, catchy phrase, or lick and the ideas start flowing like Niagara Falls! You get absorbed and sometimes you complete the idea in minutes and other times the completed song takes years. But each time you revisit the song you feel the rush. The rush it what keeps people writing songs. It isn't the hits they produce but the idea of creating something from nothing. It is a great feeling of accomplishment! Why am I writing this book and not another song? Well I am writing songs as I write this book and will be adding them as I go which means I may never finish this book. But that's OK; I don't write for you, I write for me. Hmmm! That may become a new song idea! "I Don't Write for You, I Write for Me". We will see what that idea sparks. I think songwriters have a common bond and I know I love reading how people create songs. Sometimes it validates my process and sometimes I get new ideas to try. I hope something in this book inspires you!
