Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WARNING: I think this book is crap. It is the first edition and has not been updated like the Kindle version. I think the Kindle version is also crap and I am in the process of fully revising and re-releasing ... but this only happens after my current book - My Life Your Story - is published. If, after all this preamble, you still wish to buy the book, thank you.Have you ever had the desire to just drop everything and follow your Heart, as a last-chance gamble at finding True Love and Freedom? Philen Naidu did just that. Aged 23 he dropped out of university, strapped on a 25-litre backpack, left family and friends behind and set off into the deep and wild unknowns of REAL Africa, with nothing to rely on except a 'voice' inside. A voice that he trusted would lead him to True Love and Freedom. But would it? Naidu allows us to join him in his early-life crisis as he journeys into an Africa that few of us get to truly experience; and a journey within himself that few of us dare to choose. There's no new camera and bug spray in his luggage, as he heads north from his comfortable suburban South African upbringing into unknown rural lands. It's a movingly honest account of his time spent traveling and living amongst the people of tribal Zambia, his westernized way of thinking constantly challenged as he becomes accustomed to a new way of life. Whether he's bumping into wild hippo at night, sitting in the shade of mango trees with the villagers and sharing in their 'local brew', or learning the intricacies of smuggling items across the border for business, what he discovers along the way about life and himself is so clear and simple, yet so difficult to apply. It's a journey that will have you thinking about everything - where your food comes from and with whom you share it, to how you'd go about fighting off competitors to get the prized liver from a recently culled elephant. My Life My Africa is the inspiring true-life story of a young man's search to find purpose for his existence, and a Love worth living for. "In the tradition of Homer's Odyssey and Herman Hesse's Siddhartha, My Life My Africa invites the reader to experience a young man's journey to find his truth and to test himself against the forces of life that tempt him to abandon his soul and his beliefs." - Pulitzer Prize Nominee, Barbara Benjamin Take a Journey Through Africa and See it With Your Soul

Recalling the lives of friends and neighbours—both African and European—Dinesen provides a first-hand perspective of colonial Africa. Through her obvious love of both the landscape and her time in Africa, Dinesen’s meditative writing style deeply reflects the themes of loss as her plantation fails and she returns to Europe. To her, she always felt there was something missing in her life even as a small child. After hours of conversations with Jolene, I have come to the conclusion that she has proven to me she was reincarnated from Soma, a young African girl somewhere in Africa. Dante was reincarnated from Kahari. Kahari was an African warrior, so in this life, he has become a warrior in blue. Jolene was so forthcoming about her life. The stories never varied. Dante was a nonbeliever until the very end.

Book excerpt: In 1973, Valerie Browning, a young Sydney nurse, volunteered to go to Ethiopia to help the victims of a devastating famine. She had little or no conception of Africa or Africans, and yet the continent and its people would become the guiding force of her life.Galvanised by the suffering she witnessed in Ethiopia, on her return to Australia she became a human rights and aid activist for the people of the Horn of Africa. Valerie's work led her back to Africa again and again, involving her - at considerable risk to herself - in the armed liberation conflicts of the region. Even as she discovered brutality and corruption at the heart of these political movements, she also found love, marrying Ismael Ali Gardo, whose people, the Afar, roamed Ethiopia, Eritrea and the Sudan as nomadic herdsmen. Ismael's life mission was to help the Afar - desperately poor, uneducated, landless, and the victims of oppression in every country they once roved freely. Soon it became Valerie's too, as she embraced their culture and threw herself into their cause. In one of the most inhospitable landscapes on earth, Valerie and Ismael have waged an incredible struggle, bringing health and education to a people who would otherwise have nothing. Valerie's story is both an astonishing adventure and a testament to how determination and passion can achieve extraordinary things.

Book excerpt: Africa does not give up its secrets easily. Buried there lie answers about the origins of humankind and the dawn of civilisation. Through a century of archaeological investigation, scientists have transformed our understanding of the beginnings of human life, although vital clues still remain hidden. In Born in Africa, Martin Meredith follows the trail of discoveries about our human origins made by scientists over the last hundred years, as well as describing the history of scholarship in this incredibly exciting field. He relates the intense rivalries, personal feuds and fierce controversies that shaped the study and perception of Africa, and recounts the feats of skill and endurance that have illuminated thousands of years of human evolution. The results have been momentous. Scientists have identified more than twenty species of extinct humans and firmly established Africa as the birthplace not only of humankind, but also of our own species: homo sapiens, the modern human. Scientific study has revealed how early technology, language ability and artistic endeavour all originated in Africa, and scientists have shown how, in an exodus sixty thousand years ago, small groups of Africans left their birthplace to populate the rest of the world. We all have an African legacy, and in this fascinating and informative book Martin Meredith leads us back to the place where we have rediscovered our common human heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a short collection of memories about being white and living in South Africa during Apartheid. I wrote this book for the reader to easily understand what it was like to live in this environment. It is not a history lesson, but some personal experiences that I went through living in South Africa at the time. Living through apartheid I never even realized that it even existed, because we were brought up to believe that it was normal. Life was paradise for me and hell for others! Many of us did not know or care, and even if we did try to change the system, it would have resulted in prison or death. We believed that changing apartheid would have caused the country to fall into the hands of the communists, and many white people were fearful that black rule would have destroyed South Africa and their lives. The other side of the coin is that I cant comprehend what the lives of most blacks was like, which was excruciatingly difficult, something that I didnt personally experience. Our history books never taught us anything good about blacks. I cant remember ever learning anything positive that blacks did. What I did learn was that they were lazy, uneducated, dangerous, and drank a lot. Stay away from them, and if they bother you call the police. There were serious injustices in South Africa, and many black people suffered under the Apartheid Regime.

With new documentary evidence, Jeal explores the very nature of exploration and reappraises a reputation, in a way that is both moving and truly majestic.
