Download or read book Fishing, Gone? written by Sid Dobrin and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have a rapacious relationship with the world’s ocean, extracting immeasurable quantities of its inhabitants and resources, while simultaneously depositing unbound sums of pollution into it. If we are to move toward sustainable practices, then we must first move toward ways of thinking about fish and fisheries beyond mere economic agendas. And there is one group in particular who could make an impact: saltwater anglers. Recreational saltwater fishing is big business and big culture. The industry is one of the largest in the United States, but that has not translated into a cohesive effort, agenda, or ethic. Saltwater anglers, a diverse group with a range of motivations, do not belong to a single organization through which to galvanize significant voting or lobbying power toward conservation regulation. As a result, federal policymakers have traditionally focused on commercial harvesting interests. Dubbed the “most contemplative of pastimes,” recreational fishing provides a valuable perspective on how humans interact with saltwater environments. Fishing, Gone? builds on this tradition of reflection and opens up the saltwater sportfishing life as a method for thinking through the current status of marine fisheries and environment. Author Sid Dobrin calls on fellow saltwater anglers to reconsider their relationship to fishes and the ocean—the sport can no longer be only about the joy and freedom of fishing, but it must also be about living for the ocean, living with the ocean, and living through the ocean. It is about securing the opportunity to fish on while meeting the economic and environmental challenges that lie ahead.

Book Synopsis A Sportsman's Life by : Leigh Perkins
Download or read book A Sportsman's Life written by Leigh Perkins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Leigh Perkins bought the Orvis Company in 1965, the fly-fishing and bird-hunting outfitter was a sleepy business with annual sales that had leveled off at $500,000. Over the next thirty years Perkins built Orvis's annual sales to $100 million by revolutionizing the catalog retail industry and reshaping the company's tradition-bound culture. He achieved this by blending his love of nature with his business acumen and bringing the commonsense approach he learned in the streams and on his hunts to his boardroom decision making. The basic principles he used to run his business include: The Customer Is Always Right. . . Even When You Know Damned Well He's Wrong: Perkins put such a high priority on customer service that he would personally man the phones at the height of the holiday season each year to keep in touch with his customers. Product Excellence: Perkins made sure that everything Orvis sold was of the highest quality--even if that meant he had to fight the US government to get access to embargoed Chinese bamboo for fly rods. Empower Your Employees: By promoting from within, and by empowering his employees to solve problems without manager involvement, Perkins built a loyal and talented team. Living the outdoor life his catalog popularized, Perkins traveled all over the world to fish and hunt, from Argentina to New Zealand, while devoting his resources to conservation causes worldwide.

Book Synopsis Mindful Teaching and Learning by : Karen Ragoonaden
Download or read book Mindful Teaching and Learning written by Karen Ragoonaden and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mindful Teaching and Learning: Developing a Pedagogy of Well-Being features a community of scholar-practitioners from across disciplines, methodologies, and ideological perspectives exploring and examining contexts that support mindful teaching, mindful learning, and a pedagogy of well-being. Collectively, these chapters document and analyze the opportunities and challenges within pedagogical sites and discuss how the disposition of mindfulness can be nurtured and sustained in educational practice and praxis. Bolstered by the positive evidence-based standards emanating from clinical settings, mindfulness based training has spread into a variety of other fields like psychology, healthcare, and more recently, education. Within pedagogical environments, an emergent secular conception of mindfulness, under the auspices of educational psychologists like Langer (1987; 1997), Goleman, (2008), Lantieri (2008), Roeser, Skinner, Beers, and Jennings, (2012), and Schonert-Reichl and Lawlor (2010), is making headway. Consequently, Mindfulness Training (MT) resources have been applied to educational contexts in order to maximize the academic, emotional, physical, and psychological benefits provided by this mind-body approach to well-being. Acknowledging the increasing evidence base for the efficacy of mindfulness interventions as well as the elevated stress levels reported by many educators and their students, this book discusses how mindful practices, praxis, and research can inform and support pedagogy, curriculum, and leadership initiatives in higher education in the twenty-first century. Alongside the multitude of recent studies in the area of Mindfulness, contributors discuss their own experiences using Self-study, Contemplative pedagogy, Living Educational Theory, and Curriculum Inquiry. The content of this book examines ways in which to develop habits of mind and courses of action, as well as a curriculum of study that can support educators as they cultivate competencies for thriving and coping with the modern demands of being a teacher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I finally have a day off from chartering, so we decide to take out two of our grandsons, Cody and Brady, both fourteen. Cody was a big strapping boy, five ten and two hundred pounds and a size 12 shoe size. Brady was also five ten, but only one hundred and forty pounds and a size 9 shoe size. Cody was passive and Brady very aggressive. Brady was born without a left forearm but he had adapted very well. After we got out on the lake, the boys tossed a coin to see who would reel in the first fish. Cody won. When we hooked the first fish, Cody grabbed the pole. This was a big fish. He reeled for fifteen minutes, and finally Brady allowed Cody to use his shoulder to rest the pole on, since Cody was complaining that it was getting hard to reel. After twenty minutes Brady said to Cody, Come on, get that fish in! Cody said, Brady, wait till its your turn. You dont know how hard this is. There are secrets to catching fish, but there are also secrets to everyday living. This book covers a vast number of both subjects. It tells of a young boy who discovered his passion at an early agefishingand the secrets he learned along the way. But what he did not know was that those secrets he learned at an early age about fishing actually applied to everyday life. Things like raising children or becoming a successful salesman or handling stress. Over the years he found that fishing secrets had many applications to life in general. The book is not just about fishing but how our lives are interwoven with all the activities we are involved in throughout our lives.
