It depicts where she was born, and chronicles her courageous journey into exile to Lesotho, Zambia, Zaire, and Britain, culminating with a diplomatic assignment in the United States of America. This is where the politics of the day intersects with personal lives, making us all more deeply appreciative of how profoundly the ?personal is political?.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life in Basuto Land: A Story of Missionary Enterprise in South Africa This book has been placed upon the list of the Religious Tract Society because it describes in very graphic and picturesque style the planting of Christian Missions among the Basutos in the early part of this century. M. Casalis has not attempted to write a connected history of the mission; he has only put together his recollections of the men and deeds of fifty years since, under the general title of Mes Souvenirs. In a fascinating manner he sketches for us his early life in France, his spiritual education and development, and his pioneer work in South Africa. His experiences in the latter country have all the freshness of an original explorer, and they refer to a time when Moffat and Livingstone were yet unknown to fame. The book has been very popular in its French dress, and it is hoped that it will soon find a wide circle of friends among English readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992, a gang leader was shot dead by an ANC member in Kroonstad. The murder weapon was then hidden on Antjie Krog’s stoep. In Begging to Be Black, Krog begins by exploring her position in this controversial case. From there the book ranges widely in scope, both in time - reaching back to the days of Basotho king Moshoeshoe - and in space - as we follow Krog’s experiences as a research fellow in Berlin, far from the Africa that produced her. Begging to Be Black is a book of journeys - moral, historical, philosophical and geographical. These form strands that Krog interweaves and sets in conversation with each other, as she explores questions of change and becoming, coherency and connectedness, before drawing them closer together as the book approaches its powerful end. Experimental and courageous, Begging to Be Black is a welcome addition to Krog’s own oeuvre and to South African literary non-fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sources of the African Past combines a case-study approach with an emphasis on primary and orally transmitted sources to accomplish three objectives; to tell a story in some depth, to portray major themes and to raise basic questions of analysis and interpretation. The case studies are set in the nineteenth century and deal with critical periods in the fortunes of five societies in different parts of the continent (South, East, and West Africa). The authors wish students to work with the "raw" materials of history and to that end have provided a workbook for a "laboratory" experience. Sources of the African Past is designed for use in a wide variety of courses and in conjuction with other texts. The authors have kept their own interpretations to a minimum and invited scrutiny of their decision of selection and arrangement. They chose the cases on the basis of several criteria: geographical coverage, abundance and diversity of primary sources, importance in the secondary literature, and relevance to important historical problems. All the studies emphasize political change. All witness some growth in European intervention. In selecting the documents, the authors sought a balance of perspective without sacrificing accuracy and relevance. This means a conscious effort to present a variety of views: African and European, internal and external, partipant and observer, those of the victims as well as those of the victors, those of the "people" as well as those of the elite. Within the limitations of space, they have made the excerpts sufficiently long to allow the reader to examine the author's style, purpose and other characteristics. Keeping in mind the limitations of libraries, they have attemted to make each chapter self-contained.
