Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most women, a visit to the OB-GYN is a dreaded experience. It invokes images of sitting on an examination table in a flimsy, tissue paper gown, of staring nervously at the dreaded “stirrups,” of feeling exposed, of being poked and prodded, and of being asked embarrassing questions about sex and reproduction. If it is a first visit, the patient will inevitably wonder: “What is my doctor really like? Is he cold and clinical or friendly and down to earth? How did he become a doctor? And why?” In a book that is as eye-opening as it is compelling, retired OB-GYN Douglas Edwin Heritage invites us to share the joy, humor, and tragedy of his 43-year career as a medical student, intern, resident, and physician in private practice. Through a series of short vignettes, Heritage leads us through experiences ranging from the unconventional pranks of medical school to the solemnity of pronouncing his first patient. He candidly brings to life the colorful and often bizarre encounters that define the unique medical subculture of obstetrics and gynecology. Stimulating, irreverent, and often droll, My Life as an OB-GYN will delight both practitioners and laymen alike.

Book excerpt: "Assume the Position: Memoirs of an Obstetrician" will place the reader in the shoes of an Obstetrician and Gynecologist with years of clinical experience and training. It will also place the reader in the same stirrups as patients in my office, listening to the trials, tribulations, joys, and fears expressed to me. All women wonder what other women experience when they see their OB GYN physician. All men wonder what his girlfriend or wife will be subjected to when exposed in front of their 'Gyno'. The stresses and strains of a busy professional life on an Obstetrician Gynecologist are revealed in intimate, true detail. The story begins after early retirement from one of the busiest group practices in Phoenix, Arizona and a move to the beautiful high alpine ski town of Telluride, Colorado, after an ultimatum from my wife. From there the story continues to the depths of Africa to explore women's health care in a small country with some of the worst obstetrical and neonatal outcomes in the world. Timely topics subsequently discussed include office life, operating room experiences, the medical malpractice crisis, abortion, the family life of an obstetrician, labor and delivery, night life, the business of medicine, Obamacare, managed care, and life after private practice. Each chapter is punctuated with true, unfiltered vignettes, laughable, joyful, fearful, and tearful, that can only be found in the life of an OB-GYN physician as he goes throughout his day. I am an actively licensed, American Board Certified Obstetrician Gynecologist. A graduate of Princeton University, I was trained at two of the top medical institutions in Philadelphia, after which my wife and I picked up our East Coast roots and moved to begin anew in the desert of Arizona. After 21 years of private practice, involved in all aspects of practice management and women's health care and research, I chose to leave it all behind and begin a second career in expert witness medical malpractice testimony, and then a third career as a medical director. I believe you will enjoy the experience of spending some time in my shoes.

This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a brief look at a life spent in the "Gyn Mill" as Dr. Cone shares stories about medical school, hilarious tales from his practice and thoughts about the current transition from "caring to commercial" in the health care community. From the book: Talking with my patients about their lives and families was a great pleasure. Thanks to the bureaucrats and minute counters, this experience in many offices has gone the way of the buggy whips. A most upbeat older patient, after elaborating some of her problems, looked up at me and said, "But you know, with the troubles I have, I'm grateful wrinkles don't hurt." The loyalty of long-time patients was once exhibited by an octogenarian and her friend, also a patient, who told me, "Lena and I are furious with you for retiring. We decided we would rather change husbands than gynecologists." Late night call: "My wife is in terrible pain." "Please put her on, I need to talk to her." "Oh, she's asleep." Duh! About the Author: William J. Cone is a retired (unemployed) Ob/Gyn physician. He has had essays, critiques and profiles published in several magazines and is also the author of So You're Retiring ... A Guy's Guide to Being at Home (Seaboard Press). He enjoys writing, reading, gardening, playing tennis and collecting first editions. Currently, he resides in Tennessee but lived in New Orleans earlier in his career.

Among things we are more likely to dream about are our goals and aspirations for our life. However, one must not forget about having fun, as well. What happens when you are thrown that unfortunate curve ball that changes your life forever? Do you throw it back? Do you keep it as a souvenir? What do you do? My Life Is In Gods Hands tells the story of a courageous Black woman who was thrown many curve balls in life. She did not give up. Instead she used her faith in God to guide her thru lifes byways and highways. Her experiences taught her, she was safe and tucked away in the mercy and blessed hands of God. Even when her life flashed before her eyes more than once, even when she had to learn to walk again more than twice, she held on to Gods unchanging hands, trusting and believing that although her earthly vessel tried to leave, her spirit would always remain intact and be safe in the hands of God.

This book was released on 2010-05-24 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Pot, No Window is a true story about my life starting in the year 1951 when I was born in Marshall, Texas, to poor, uneducated parents. This book is intended to be a motivator and inspiration to all the people struggling to survive financially as I did for the majority of my life. The expression ?no pot, no window? means you are so poor that you don?t have a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out. I believe poverty, lack of education, a negative home environment, alcohol and/or drug abuse, bad judgment, a single parent home, disease/illness, and sometimes just plain bad luck keeps the syndrome of ?no pot, no window? perpetuating generation after generation. My abusive alcoholic father abandoned my two sisters and me when I was nine years old, and my codependent mother was absent from my life for many years. After my father left and my parents divorced, my mother spent the rest of her life looking for another husband to support her. She was married nine times and never did find her Prince Charming, just another drunk she met at a bar and dragged home. When I was ten years old, my mother sent my two sisters and me to live with her parents for over three years, and during this period she was completely absent from our lives. My maternal grandparents, who were survivors of the Great Depression of 1929, were very tight with their money and affection. They really did not want to raise three young children but decided we would be a valuable asset as farmhands on their five-acre farm. My mother came back into my life when I was thirteen years old and the saga of stepfathers began. At the age of sixteen, I had a job, a car, and was self-sufficient. Unfortunately, I was also a juvenile delinquent because I had little or no parental supervision. For lack of any other options, I joined the military in 1969, during the height of the Vietnam War, and began the long journey of becoming an adult. Due to my immaturity and poor judgment, I was married and divorced three times before the age of thirty and became a single parent to my only child. When I was thirty-two years old, I was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer and spent the next five years struggling to stay alive physically and financially. With the assistance of the military, I was able to obtain my bachelor of arts degree from the University of Mississippi in 1982 and a masters of forensic science from George Washington University in 1986. After twenty-one years of active duty service, I subsequently retired as a lieutenant from the United States Navy in 1993. I refused to accept and was able to overcome the ?no pot, no window? plight because of my perseverance, hard work, and most importantly, advanced education. I changed my life from sour lemons to sweet lemonade!

The message is this: “We may not always have the easy road in life, but with creativity and determination and not taking “no” for an answer can take you where you want to go.”

Book excerpt: Dr. John Gerard Gallucci believes true healing occurs by allowing the energy of God and the Holy Spirit to run through him and into those to be healed. In his pediatric surgery practice, he heals through the Holy Spirit every day. In My Life with God, he presents a compilation of against-all-odds spiritually and metaphysically-based true stories that demonstrate how God and the spirit move in and work through our lives. Gallucci offers a supernatural journey of healing the heart, mind, body, and soul. He shares the essence of what it means to live and work in a spiritual-metaphysical world of healing while rendering gold standard surgical care to premature infants, babies, and children. Each true story illustrates what can be accomplished by allowing God’s river of love and light to flow regardless of how difficult some challenges may seem or how improbable finding a silver lining on the darkest cloud may appear. In My Life with God, Gallucci shows how if you see others with the eyes of your heart and offer them love and compassion, you will render true healing.

Book excerpt: MY LIFE: A Story of Resilience and Love is a memoir that celebrates the beauty of how much self-expression resides in each of us. It is an uncommon saga of unique depth that tracks eight transformative decades, beginning with circumstances that dare the imagination and that became a personal marker for Tom Delebo. From childhood, Tom put his dreams into action with fearless individualism, expressing himself in one endeavor after another, a blueprint for how to live an engaged life. He would learn, too, that fueling his relentless drive was a profound quest for personal connection and love. It has been quite the ride.
