Book excerpt: When my Husband and I became Grandparents, we were surprised at the uncontrollable and endless flow of love and affection we felt for our Grandchildren. It was a feeling that seemed to equal, or surpass the feelings we had for our children when they were growing up (sorry kids). But we soon found that while the love seemed to be as equal, expressing it was different. My maternal Grandmother displayed that same kind of endless flow of love for her grand kids. I knew her as Granny, and I believe she was the litmus test, the gold standard for all Grandmothers. She showered all of her grand kids with unconditional love, and made each of us feel as if we were the most important person in the world. I knew Granny as Granny, and I am sure that I didn't learn her last name until I was much older. To me her name could have been Granny, No Middle Initial, Granny, because to us it was about the way she made us feel, and how we felt about her, and the name Granny was all we needed to know. My grand kids call me Grandma, and for the longest time, that was my first and last name to them, and I didn't mind at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart, warm, telling, and funny, Funny, Your Don't Look Like a Grandmother is the perfect bouquet for today's grandmother, that active and interesting woman who is old enough to be somebody's grandmother and young enough to run around the world. Lois Wyse's new book, charmingly illustrated by Lilla Rogers, is a collection of wit and wisdom for today's Nana, Grandma, Goo-Goo, or Gran. How can you recognize today's grandmother? Easy, says Wyse. The grandmother is the one who goes out more and complains less than her daughter. In the spirit of Erma Bombeck and Bill Cosby, Lois Wyse tells loving and amusing stories that illustrate the joys of contemporary grandmothering. According to Lois Wyse, "A mother becomes a true grandmother the day she stops noticing the terrible things her children do because she is so enchanted with the wonderful things her grandchildren do." Contemporary grandmothers and their children and grandchildren will see themselves in these reflections of family life that include everything from how it feels to become a grandmother to gentle advice on parenting and career grandmothers. Funny, You Don't Look Like a Grandmother is the first nontraditional book about grandmothers who may not look like grandmothers -- but who love as deeply as the generations of grannies who preceded them.

Book excerpt: In a time when “Negros knew their place,” in a small community hidden behind the cornfields just outside of Virginia Beach, Lorraine Ferebee began a journey that would take her throughout the United States and to Europe. Lorraine Ferebee’s parents and grandparents had big dreams for her generation, and Ferebee was taught that Dr. King had marched and died so that she would have opportunities, perhaps become a professional, a doctor or a lawyer. But Ferebee became fascinated with horses at a young age and believed that her destiny would somehow include horses. She wanted to emulate the spirit of the horse, to be a giver, to learn how to acquiesce, to find her true voice and speak her truth. Her life journey did indeed include horses. After years of dedicated training, she was able to enjoy her time riding and teaching while earning a living as an equestrian. But Ferebee’s journey was not solely about horses. It was about finding out what motivated her, over and over again, and then going for it, over and over again. Her story is about faith, perseverance, and resilience—that’s the realization of the dream that Dr. King preached. Always be curious and open to new interests and new goals. Follow the path in front of you, and the way forward will be made clear.

As Kevin helps his parents with the family mortuary, his dream of working for National Geographic seems a million years away—until he and his friends are picked for a special science class at Armadillo Middle School. The class is taught by Dr. Alfred Leopold Wallace, the pompous proprietor of the local Arkansas Marsupial Museum and Discount Souvenir Outlet. Kevin’s friends aren’t keen about the doctor or his possums, but Kevin’s sure that Dr. Wallace can help him become the youngest biologist in history. All he has to do is get Dr. Wallace to notice his scientific genius! The harder Kevin tries, however, the worse his projects flop—including the midterm tarantula project that escapes and terrorizes the funeral home. The class trip to Seven Devils Swamp is Kevin’s last chance—if he doesn’t let his pride get in the way of his final project.

It tells about how she went from a mostly happy childhood and young adulthood to depression, anxiety, and poverty, which didnt help. Her mother nearly died when the author was 9, and the 1976 Swine flu shot was the culprit. Mary Weldon put herself through college, got a scholarship, studied in France, and developed depression and an eating disorder. Ultimately, self help books and the local clinic as well as a few hospital stays helped her to choose life. Some relationships faltered and didnt succeed, but she kept her chin up and kept her faith in God.

Book excerpt: This book explores the diverse manner in which family dynamics shaped Jewish identities in ways that were unique and directly connected to their experiences within their families of origin. Highlighted is the diversity of experience of ethnic identity within members of a group of women who are similar in many respects and who belong to an ethnic group that is often invisible. Jewish people, like members of other ethnic groups are often treated as if their identities were homogeneous. However, gender, social class, sexual orientation, factors surrounding immigration status, proximity of family members to the holocaust or pogroms, the number of generations one's family has been in the US and other salient aspects of experience and identites transform and inform the meaning and experience by group members. The book explores these diversities of experience and goes on to highlight the way in which the intermingling of family dynamics and subsequent Jewish identity in these women is manifested in the practice of psychotherapy. In 2012, the book had been awarded the Jewish Women Caucus of the Association for Women in Psychology Award for Scholarship, for that year. This book was published as a special issue of Women and Therapy.

Book excerpt: This is a true-life memoir of defiant endurance through cruelty and traumatic loss, leading to ultimate survival. The author presents his father’s ordeals during five and a half years of Nazi captivity during the Holocaust. Included is a section of his mother’s similar experiences, although limited by her difficulty in discussing this topic. As the title infers, throughout he perceives the aura of his late grandma’s spirit protecting him with her angelic wings, as vowed in an early vision. Besides the brutal forced labor, extreme hunger, and massive life upheaval, there are numerous near-death escapes. He consistently feels luck being steered his way. With this fortune, perseverance, and daring he ends up as the lone survivor of his large family. A similar outcome applies to the author’s mother. Narrated from a first-person viewpoint it depicts forced migrations, Warsaw ghetto internment, and an ever worsening struggle to survive. Finally he must endure a series of Nazi camps for years until Russian liberation brings the war’s end. He becomes aware of the complete loss of family, being alone in the world in his early twenties. Finally free, DP camp life offers renewal, marriage, USA migration, and starting over.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dr. Patrick C. Horton was wounded on the battlefield during Operation Iraqi Freedom, his life was endangered in more ways than one. The brush with death woke him up to what takes many people a lifetime to discover: We are lucky to be here, and it is our sacred opportunity to figure out what we want to achieve. With candor and insight, Dr. Horton outlines how living with leadership, character, passion, and determination helped him leave behind the foibles of his youth to achieve executive and entrepreneurial success. Even more importantly, he outlines how readers can pinpoint and pursue their own goals for an unapologetically successful existence in which they, too, feel lucky to be here.
