Book Synopsis My Heresies by : Michael Jean Nystrom-Schut
Download or read book My Heresies written by Michael Jean Nystrom-Schut and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mind of each person on the planet, a set of notions and ideas of God or gods reside. Some of these systems are basic and simple. Others are highly complex and complicated. Some borrow their God/god notions from authority, or from others they know. Others are much more original - eclectically piecing together many separate parts from multiple sources. No two people in the world experience and translate God/gods in the same way. And this is what makes things so interesting! As I have encountered this wonderful life, I have also bumped up against countless people who were in the position to explain exactly who God was and was not. They were quite sure of themselves, and anxious to impart this wisdom to me. But because I had a mind and heart of my own, this put me on the outside looking in, for much of my life. We all come to a place where we realize we must make our minds up as to what we will and will not do, how we will think and who we will be. As I have encountered them and their God/gods, I have found my own way through this foggy maze, and discovered a modicum of peace and reconciliation in the process. This is the massive task of all of us, as well as why I needed to lay it out to you, in this lengthy, 2-part book.
Book Synopsis Heresies and how to Avoid Them by : Ben Quash
Download or read book Heresies and how to Avoid Them written by Ben Quash and published by SPCK Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What don't Christians believe? Is Jesus really divine? Is Jesus really human? Can God suffer? Can people be saved by their own efforts? The early church puzzled over these questions, ruling in some beliefs and ruling out others. Heresies and How to Avoid Them explains the principal ancient heresies and shows why contemporary Christians still need to know about them. These famous detours in Christian believing seemed plausible and attractive to many people in the past, and most can still be found in modern-day guises. By learning what it is that Christians don't believe--and why--believers today can gain a deeper, truer understanding of their faith. --! From back cover.

Download or read book Heresies written by Thomas Szasz and published by Anchor Books. This book was released on 1976 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Heresy means to choose. The person who chooses 'wrongly' is a heretic; yet heretics, since the beginning of time, have existed in all societies. The result has been an endless conflict between holders of power, whose business it is to rule, and the individual, whose business it is to free himself from arbitrary authority. It is this personal human conflict -- between power and knowledge, authority and reason, the collective and the individual -- which noted psychiatrist Thomas Szasz explores in Heresies. In the same biting but often humorous vein as in The Second Sin, Dr. Szask illuminates the contractions and fallacies that make up our contemporary attitudes toward sex and marriage, freedom and punishment, law and morals, medicine and psychiatry. These aphorism expose many of our modern beliefs and practices to be as self-serving and inhuman as those of the medieval Christians, who, out of fear of the Devil, burned witches at the stake" -- Back cover
Book Synopsis The Great Heresies by : Hilaire Belloc
Download or read book The Great Heresies written by Hilaire Belloc and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of a classic work, the great Catholic apologist and historian Hilaire Belloc examines the five most destructive heretical movements in Christianity: Arianism, Mohammedanism (Islam), Albigensianism, Protestantism, and Modernism. Belloc describes how these movements began, how they spread, and how they have continued to influence the world. He accurately predicts the re-emergence of militant Islam and its violent aggression against Western civilization. When we hear the word "heresies", we tend to think of distant centuries filled with religious quarrels that seemed important at the time but are no longer relevant. Belloc shows that the heresies of olden times are still with us, sometimes under different names and guises, and that they still shape our world.
Book Synopsis Lacan and Other Heresies by : Linda Clifton
Download or read book Lacan and Other Heresies written by Linda Clifton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers together the recent writings of the analysts and members of the Freudian School of Melbourne and the Belgian analyst Christian Fierens, displaying the ongoing interrogation by the School of Lacanian psychoanalysis into its history, theories and practices. Within the framework of Lacan’s interventions in Freudian psychoanalysis, the book in particular highlights Lacan’s inventions in theoretical discourse and clinical practice, including the no-sexual relation, the discursive structures of language, the school, the cartel and the pass. Theoretical shibboleths such as the Oedipus complex are questioned, while the historical writings of Sabina Spielrein are read and interpreted anew. Chapters also engage with the psychoanalysis of children, the questions posed by the psychoses to psychoanalysis and the intersection of creativity and the arts in new and original ways. Bringing together a range of expert contributions, this text will be an illuminating resource for scholars and practitioners of psychoanalysis.
Book Synopsis Superheroes Can’t Save You by : Todd Miles
Download or read book Superheroes Can’t Save You written by Todd Miles and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comic superheroes embody the hopes of a world that is desperate for a savior. But those comic creations cannot save us from our greatest foes—sin and death. Throughout the history of the Church there have been bad ideas, misconceptions, and heretical presentations of Jesus. Each one of these heresies fails to present Jesus as the Bible reveals him. In Superheroes Can’t Save You, Todd Miles demonstrates how these ancient heresies are embodied in contemporary comic superheroes. Miles compares something everybody already knows (who the superheroes are) with what they need to know (who Jesus is), in a book that makes vitally important Christian truths understandable and applicable to a wide audience.
