Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Write your story. Reflect on your identity. Understand your emotions. And breathe, brother. Breathing as a black man, has now, more than ever, officially become an act of resistance. From Michael Brown to George Floyd, it is evident that saying "I can't breathe" is not a cry for help worth listening to; rather, it is the green light for taking one's life. Add to that the continued violence towards black folks in general, and black existence is seen as threatening. In addition to witnessing such racial trauma, black men specifically have often become subject to the racist narratives of society while also lacking in adequate space for healing and personal development. "breathe" serves to provide space for healing and to promote a journey to wholeness for black men. Along this 45-day guided journal journey, black men will reclaim the narrative of their own story, process the impact of their identity on their existence, and more fully understand the range of emotions that they feel. This guided journal is perfect for black men ages 16+ and will guide them through prompts and activities to which black men don't often give thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racial and ethnic disparities in health care are known to reflect access to care and other issues that arise from differing socioeconomic conditions. There is, however, increasing evidence that even after such differences are accounted for, race and ethnicity remain significant predictors of the quality of health care received. In Unequal Treatment, a panel of experts documents this evidence and explores how persons of color experience the health care environment. The book examines how disparities in treatment may arise in health care systems and looks at aspects of the clinical encounter that may contribute to such disparities. Patients' and providers' attitudes, expectations, and behavior are analyzed. How to intervene? Unequal Treatment offers recommendations for improvements in medical care financing, allocation of care, availability of language translation, community-based care, and other arenas. The committee highlights the potential of cross-cultural education to improve provider-patient communication and offers a detailed look at how to integrate cross-cultural learning within the health professions. The book concludes with recommendations for data collection and research initiatives. Unequal Treatment will be vitally important to health care policymakers, administrators, providers, educators, and students as well as advocates for people of color.

Financial hardship. Relationship issues. Domestic Violence. A miscarriage. Feelings of grief and desperation... no matter what made you seek therapy, we would like to congratulate you on this important step. And we would like to "hold your hand" to make the most of it... ♥ ...because no matter what you're going through (or what you've been through), we believe that therapy and self-reflection will help you overcome your trauma and find peace again. ◆ ◆ ◆ We created this journal to help you make the most of your therapy and self-reflection sessions. This is a journal with prompts (questions and suggestions), and it was designed to support you during 6 months of therapy (with weekly therapy sessions, ie. 4-5 sessions per month). It will help you make progress by: - prompting you to think and write about important things before, during and after each therapy session, (you could write about how you are feeling, about thoughts that are coming to your mind, about recent events, etc) - and encouraging you to make periodic check ups (ie. an assessment of your overall progress) at the end of each month. ★ How you can use this journal ★ There are 4 sections on this journal: 1.Therapy session notes - where you will write about your recent thoughts, feelings and events and important insights that may come to you during your therapy sessions 2. Checkup pages - a space for you to reflect after each month (or after 4-5 sessions) and assess your progress 3. Meaningful Quotes and Thoughts - an optional section for you to capture powerful quotes or thoughts that help you feel energized and committed to your healing journey 4. Additional Notes pages - a space for you to write about anything else that you think is important and was not captured by the previous sections (or you may use it as a space to continue to write about your Therapy Sessions and periodic Checkups, if you'd like to have more room for that) ◆ ◆ ◆ This journal is a great gift to anyone going through therapy, as it will bring a little bit of reflection and intentionality to therapy and their healing process. This journal can help people attending therapy to: ✓ "pause" to reflect, ✓ release stress, by writing about thoughts and feelings, ✓ plan for their future therapy sessions in advance, making the most of them, ✓ and, overtime, have a record of highlights of their healing journeys in an easy and organized way. ◆ ◆ ◆ We sincerely hope that your healing will happen faster, and in a more intentional way with the help of this journal. We trust that with the help of therapy & your commitment to healing, your self-confidence will grow and you will find true happiness again. Let's do this together!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health researchers routinely evaluate health and illness across subgroups defined by their sex, gender, ethnicity, and race. All too often, these classifications are proffered as an explanation for any differences that may be detected, for example, in access to care, frequency of disease, or response to treatment. Relatively few researchers, however, have examined what these classifications mean on a theoretical level or in the context of their own research. Assume, for example, that a researcher concludes from his or her data that African- Americans utilize certain surgical procedures less frequently than whites. This conclusion may mean little without an examination of the various underlying issues. Is there such a construct as race at all? How were whites and African-Americans classified as such? Does this finding reflect inappropriate overutilization of the specific procedures among whites or inappropriate underutilization among African-Americans? To what extent are socioeconomic status and method of payment related to the less frequent use? Are there differences in the manner in which health care providers present the various treatment options to whites and to African- Americans that could account for these differences in utilization? Are there differences in health care-seeking and health care preferences between the two groups that would explain the difference in utilization? Is the racial classification a surrogate measure for another variable that has remained unidentified and unmeasured? All too often, unfortunately, such issues are ignored or lightly dismissed with an entreaty for additional research.

This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychosocial stressors are a part of the human condition. Individuals experience a myriad of stressors in their everyday lives, and, while many people experience some of the same types of stressors, responses and reactions to stressful life events, interactions, and situations often vary. Research has shown that these stressors often have negative effects on physical and mental health outcomes, among others. Thus, the way one copes with psychosocial stressors is important for explaining human behavior and variations across and within certain groups. For African Americans, there are added stressors that impact daily functioning, due to no fault of their own. These stressors include, but are not limited to, discrimination, microaggressions, and police brutality, as well as income, health, and education inequalities. Inspired by the John Henryism hypothesis and, more broadly, the research on John Henryism, African American Coping in the Political Sphere explores the influence coping has on African Americans' political attitudes and behaviors. Jas M. Sullivan and Moriah Harman reveal that coping plays a role in political outcomes just as it does in social, economic, psychological, and health outcomes. Consequently, coping offers insight into why some individuals believe and behave in the ways that they do in the political sphere.

Book excerpt: Diversity, Oppression, and Change, Third Edition provides a culturally grounded approach to practice, policy, and research in social work and allied fields. The book's intersectionality perspective provides a lens through which students can identify connections between identities based on race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, religion, and ability status. Through theoretical and empirical content as well as "Notes from the Field," students become familiar with the culturally grounded perspective and culturally appropriate ways of engaging with diverse communities. Marsiglia, Kulis, and Lechuga-Peña have crafted a book about hope and resiliency, the miraculous ability of individuals and communities to bounce back from oppressive experiences and historical trauma, and the role of social workers as allies in that journey.
