Young David looks on in awe as the spirit of Stonewall Jackson takes control. Is there anything that he can do to stop the sometimes vindictive spirit of his ancestor? Or, does he glory in the knowledge that he is gifted with the same cunning and daring as the renowned hero of the old South? Find out what happens when he learns the truth.

Book excerpt: My sister and I are the only survivors of the black heirs of the Confederate General "Stonewall" Jackson. Katie, my sister Lucille, my brother Jimmy and myself were all gifted by the quirky, off-kilter spirit of the famous general. Each of us inherited his burning ambition, his religiosity, his foolhardiness, and his brazen sexuality. I went ape with the sexuality. For me, the specter of Jackson always hovered in the background. From the roaring twenties to the here and now, it has been a difficult but exciting journey for Katie and me. Sadly, it is time for the flip side. There will be a quiet ride to a quieter cemetery, hopefully with a view. Place a lemon on my gravestone and like "Stonewall" Jackson in battle, my soul will have a tangy fruit to chew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to a young black boy in Depression stricken North Carolina when he learns he is the direct descendant of a Confederate legend? Follow David Jonathan Sawyer on a fabulous journey down the Rose Hill Road, past sunny fields white with cotton, into his favorite swamp, where he learns his family's dark and tragic secret. A boy who would rather play with June bugs and get into mischief must confront the terrifying past ¿ and the ominous present, where segregation is enforced by the same Klansmen who would dig his father a well, or sell him a cow. To venture from the swamp with his burden is to see the world in a different light. Each challenge, insult, or danger adds to his strength and wisdom until, like his famous ancestor, he can prevail against impossible odds. Along the way he finds a simple truth: that all men should be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. A witty, warm, and wonderful book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stonewall Jackson and the American Civil War, Vol. 2 of 2 Before Yorktown mcclellan's five army corps had been held in check, first by men, then by protected by earthworks of feeble profile.1 The fort at Gloucester Point was the key of the Confederate lines.' mcclellan, however, although a division was actually under orders to move against it, appears to have been unwilling to risk a failure.3 The channel of the York was thus closed both to his transports and the gunboats, and he did nothing whatever to interfere with Johnston's long line of communications, which passed at several points within easy reach of the river bank. Nor had he been more active since he had reached West Point. Except for a single ex pedition, which had dispersed a Confederate division near Hanover Court House, north of the Chickahominy, he had made no aggressive movement. He had never attempted to test the strength of the fortifications of Richmond, to hinder their construction, or to discover their weak points. His urgent demands for reinforcements had appeared in the Northern newspapers, and those newspapers had found their way to Richmond. From the same source the Confederates were made aware that he believed himself confronted by an army far larger than his own; and when, on the departure of Whiting's division for the Valley, he refused to take advantage of the opportunity to attack Lee's diminished force, it became abundantly clear, if further proof were wanting, that much might be ventured against so timid a commander. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed investigative reporter and author of Confronting Collapse examines the global forces that led to 9/11 in this provocative exposé. The attacks of September 11, 2001 were accomplished through an amazing orchestration of logistics and personnel. Crossing the Rubicon examines how such a conspiracy was possible through an interdisciplinary analysis of petroleum, geopolitics, narco-traffic, intelligence and militarism—without which 9/11 cannot be understood. In reality, 9/11 and the resulting "War on Terror" are parts of a massive authoritarian response to an emerging economic crisis of unprecedented scale. Peak Oil—the beginning of the end for our industrial civilization—is driving the elites of American power to implement unthinkably draconian measures of repression, warfare and population control. Crossing the Rubicon is more than a story of corruption and greed. It is a map of the perilous terrain through which we are all now making our way.

Book excerpt: From the #1 bestselling author of The Bomber Mafia, the landmark book that has revolutionized the way we understand leadership and decision making. In his breakthrough bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant--in the blink of an eye--that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work--in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others? In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of "blink": the election of Warren Harding; "New Coke"; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police. Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing"--filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables.
