He visits with Marigold, who scares all the bugs; Sunflower, who has a big happy face; Daffodil, who nods his head; and even some Impatiens, who hang around the shady parts of town. Book excerpt: A daughter returns home to the Navajo reservation to retrace her mother’s life in a memoir that is both a narrative and an archive of one family’s troubled history. “A candid and achingly fractured memoir of [Geller’s] mother, her family, her Navajo heritage and her own journey to self-discovery and acceptance.”—Ms. SHORTLISTED FOR: The Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize, The Jim Deva Prize for Writing That Provokes • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Esquire, She Reads When Danielle Geller’s mother dies of alcohol withdrawal during an attempt to get sober, Geller returns to Florida and finds her mother’s life packed into eight suitcases. Most were filled with clothes, except for the last one, which contained diaries, photos, and letters, a few undeveloped disposable cameras, dried sage, jewelry, and the bandana her mother wore on days she skipped a hair wash. Geller, an archivist and a writer, uses these pieces of her mother’s life to try and understand her mother’s relationship to home, and their shared need to leave it. Geller embarks on a journey where she confronts her family's history and the decisions that she herself had been forced to make while growing up, a journey that will end at her mother's home: the Navajo reservation. Dog Flowers is an arresting, photo-lingual memoir that masterfully weaves together images and text to examine mothers and mothering, sisters and caretaking, and colonized bodies. Exploring loss and inheritance, beauty and balance, Danielle Geller pays homage to our pasts, traditions, and heritage, to the families we are given and the families we choose.

Book excerpt: Through the Flower was my first book (I've since published nine others). I was inspired to write it by the writer and diarist, Anais Nin, who was a mentor to me in the early seventies. My hope was that it would aid young women artists in their development and that reading about my struggles might help them avoid some of the pitfalls that were so painful to me. I also hoped to spare them the anguish of "reinventing the wheel", which my studies in women's history had taught me was done again and again by women, specifically because we have not had access to our foremothers' experience and achievements-one consequence of the fact that we still learn both history and art history from a male-centered bias with insufficient inclusion of women's achievements. I must admit that when I re-read Through the Flower, I winced at some of the unabashed honesty; at the same time, I am glad that my youthful self had the courage to speak so directly about my life and work. I doubt that I could recapture the candor that allowed this book to reflect such unabashed confidence that the world would accept revelations so lacking in self-consciousness. And yet, it is precisely this lack that helps give the book its flavor, the flavor of the seventies, when so many of us believed that we could change the world for the better, a goal that has been-as one of my friends put it-"mugged by reality". And yet, better an overly idealistic hope that the world could be reshaped for the better than a cynical acceptance of the status quo. At least we tried-and I'm still trying. Perhaps I'm just too old now to change. Judy Chicago 2005

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Flower Power books follow the funny fifth-grade adventures of four girls with little in common but their flower names who, nevertheless, blossom into the greatest of friends. Life for the Flower Power girls is never boring. With Milla still madly in crush with sweet Max, Katie-Rose is left wondering why everyone doesn’t find fifth-grade boys as disgusting as she does. Especially pesky, annoying Preston, whose new favorite pastime is throwing erasers at Katie-Rose’s head and who always seems to be around at Katie-Rose’s most embarrassing moments. Yasaman isn’t quite ready for a boyfriend either, but she does have a brilliant matchmaking plan for two of her favorite people, and she recruits the other girls to join. The targets: beloved teachers Mr. Emerson and Ms. Perez, who are meant for each other, even if they don’t know it. The goal: to bring those lovebirds together at their school’s “Lock-In,” a teacher-chaperoned evening of fun, fabulosity, and possibly even romance. The trouble? Ms. Perez isn’t planning on coming. And when the fourth flower friend, Violet, mysteriously pulls out, too, it seems as if the Lock-In will be no fun at all. But these flowers don’t wilt so easily . . . Praise for Oopsy Daisy: A Flower Power Book “Myracle proves, once again, that she has her finger firmly on the pulse of tween girldom.” – Booklist “Myracle perfectly captures the nuances of fifth-grade life. Readers will certainly relate to the girls’ struggles to grow up but not leave childhood behind just yet. Milla, Violet, Yaz and Katie-Rose continue to charm; here’s hoping they have more hijinks in store.” – Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "utterly spectacular" book weighs the impact modern medical technology has had on the author's life against the social and environmental costs inevitably incurred by the mining that makes such innovation possible (Rachel Louise Snyder, author of No Visible Bruises). What if a lifesaving medical device causes loss of life along its supply chain? That's the question Katherine E. Standefer finds herself asking one night after being suddenly shocked by her implanted cardiac defibrillator. In this gripping, intimate memoir about health, illness, and the invisible reverberating effects of our medical system, Standefer recounts the astonishing true story of the rare diagnosis that upended her rugged life in the mountains of Wyoming and sent her tumbling into a fraught maze of cardiology units, dramatic surgeries, and slow, painful recoveries. As her life increasingly comes to revolve around the internal defibrillator freshly wired into her heart, she becomes consumed with questions about the supply chain that allows such an ostensibly miraculous device to exist. So she sets out to trace its materials back to their roots. From the sterile labs of a medical device manufacturer in southern California to the tantalum and tin mines seized by armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to a nickel and cobalt mine carved out of endemic Madagascar jungle, Lightning Flowers takes us on a global reckoning with the social and environmental costs of a technology that promises to be lifesaving but is, in fact, much more complicated. Deeply personal and sharply reported, Lightning Flowers takes a hard look at technological mythos, healthcare, and our cultural relationship to medical technology, raising important questions about our obligations to one another, and the cost of saving one life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dagoberto Gilb is “one of the most powerful writers in his generation, and The Flowers is perhaps his best book . . . Not to be missed” (Larry McMurtry). Sonny Bravo is a sensitive, unusually smart fifteen-year-old who lives with his vivacious mother. But when she marries an Okie building contractor, they are uprooted to a small apartment building in a city where prejudice is not just white against black, but also brown. As Sonny meets his new neighbors, he is inexorably ensnared in their lives: Cindy, a married, bored, drugged-up eighteen-year-old; Nica, a cloistered Mexican girl who cares for her infant brother despite never being allowed to leave her apartment: Pink, an albino black man who sells old cars in front of the building; and Bud, a muscle-bound construction worker who hates blacks and Mexicans, even while he’s married to a Mexican-American woman. In arguably his most powerful work yet, Dagoberto Gilb has written “a psychologically complex novel” that transcends age, race, and time, displaying the fearlessness and wit that have helped make him one of America’s most authentic and original voices (The Washington Post).

Book excerpt: An unlikely pair, seventeen-year-old Ming and twenty-four-year-old Yan meet and form an immediate bond. Ming, innocent and preoccupied, lives in her own world of books, music and imagination. Yan is, by contrast, beautiful, sexy, wild and manipulative. Their friendship is brief, almost accidental, but intense, and it changes Ming’s world forever. Set in modern China, February Flowers captures a society torn between tradition and modernity, dogma and freedom. It is a meditation on friendship, family, love, loss and redemption, and how a background shapes a life. ‘A first novel whose psychic terrain is the hinterland between girlhood and womanhood, lust and love, tradition and progress . . . Subtle and deftly paced, it’s ultimately a story about sheer awakening’ Observer ‘February Flowers enters the past as it was lived, in real-time and without the props of hindsight’ Financial Times ‘An exquisitely beautiful book about that uncertain border between girlhood and womanhood, between passion and desire, a country only too familiar to all women’ SANDRA CISNEROS
