Book excerpt: "It's everyday business when Wattles, the San Fernando Valley's top "executive crook," sets up a hit. He establishes a chain of criminals to pass along the instructions and the money, thereby ensuring that the hitter doesn't know who hired him. Then one day Wattles finds his office safe open and a single item missing: the piece of paper on which he has written the names of the crooks in the chain. When people associated with the chain begin to pop up dead, the only person Wattles can turn to to solve his problem is Junior Bender, professional burglar and begrudging private eye for crooks. But Junior already knows exactly who took Wattles's list: the signature is too obvious. It was Herbie Mott, Junior's burglar mentor and second father--and when Junior seeks him out to discuss the missing list, he finds Herbie very unpleasantly murdered. Junior follows the links in the chain back toward the killer, and as he does, he learns disturbing things about Herbie's hidden past. He has to ask himself how much of the life he's lived for the past twenty years has been of his own making, and how much of it was actually Herbie's game"--

Here is my review Word of Expressions on a Page is a true love story seen through the eyes of one woman. Here these are expressed in the form of poetry and short stories. I was thoroughly surprised at how completely Ms. Thompson covered the subjects she chose to address, love, marriage and life. Ironically, as a poet, I often find the views of others on these particular topics more than interesting. The style of writing in this volume is brisk. There is very little flowery wordplay. Ms. Thompson is quick and to the point with her word imagery contained within more then 150 pages to enchant you. This is refreshing to me. Two of my favorite poems are “I” and “A Mixture”. I have many others. I certainly recommend this book to anyone who wants a fresh perspective on relationships, both the good and the bad. It doesn’t get any clearer than this. Though the book ends at Christmas, there is another book to follow. A sequel titled The Christmas Story is in the works. There is so much going on that we may forget to notice.” She adds, “Sometimes life is hard and cruel, but that doesn’t mean it’s your fault. And it doesn’t matter who looks after you, as long as you have love in your life.”

For a half century, he has been host to the world's most influential figures, and after some 40,000 inter- views, here is King's own remarkable and riveting story, from his humble roots in Depression-era Brooklyn to the heights of celebrity as host of CNN's Larry King Live. In My Remarkable Journey, King tells his colorful story of growing up on Relief in Brooklyn, his early passion for broadcasting, his ascendance in Miami radio, and his early friendship with Jackie Gleason and Frank Sinatra. Married eight times, Larry didn't actually meet the son who had been named after him until Larry King Jr. was thirty-three years old. He has been fired, incarcerated, struggled with a three-pack-a-day smoking habit, had a heart attack and quintuple bypass surgery, and founded the Larry King Cardiac Foundation. A father, a grandfather, and a great- grandfather, Larry King is a man who can tell some tales. And he does it with humor and candor.

Book excerpt: Clearly the favourite character of Canada’s overseas troops during World War II, "Herbie" had a penchant for getting into some of the most bizarre predicaments imaginable. With feet that generally led to trouble and a nose like a disillusioned banana, Herbie provided Canadian soldiers with a daily ration of laughter at a time when humour was often at a premium. No figure before or since boosted so effectively the spirit of Canadians overseas. As J.D. MacFarlane, Editor of The Maple Leaf, stated so aptly: "War can be funny as hell. Things happen to soldiers that shoudn’t happen to a human – crazy situations that add touches of humour to an otherwise grim business ... Herbie helped to win the war with laughs."

Book excerpt: At the conclusion of the dinner, Chancellor Theobald Bethmann-Hollweg opened the congratulatory part of the program with a toast to His Imperial and Royal Majesty Wilhelm II Hohenzollern, by the Grace of God, German Emperor and King of Prussia. We, the assembled here, renew our faith in a man so various that he seems guided by the Grace and hand of God. Long live our Emperor!” “Hoch! Hoch! Hoch!” exclaimed the guests, each one clinking his neighbors’ wine glass. “Due to the long list of tonight’s speakers, it has been agreed that each personage will limit their speeches to five minutes. At the end of the ceremonies, guests are welcome to view the many gifts presented to His Majesty in honor of his twenty-fifth anniversary.” “With His Majesty’s permission, I wish to present Herr Andrew Carnegie from America. Herr Carnegie, a Scottish-born American is an industrialist turned philanthropist. As is well known worldwide, he built Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Steel Company. With his fortune made, the man of humble beginnings turned to philanthropy with special interests in education.” “With unselfish thoughts, he founded the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. From his adopted Pennsylvania home, he endowed the Carnegie University and Carnegie museums. Over the years, his generosity led to the establishment of many libraries, schools, and universities in America.” “In spite of his busy daily schedule, Andrew Carnegie found time to write several books, including the well received ‘Gospel of Wealth, and dozens of magazine and newspaper articles.” ‘It is with great pleasure that I offer the podium to Herr Andrew Carnegie.” “Thank you, Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg.” The Chancellor who stood a foot higher than the American bent forward to shake Carnegie’s hand which led to a titter among the audience. After spreading his notepaper on the lectern, the philanthropist turned to the Emperor. “Thank you very much, Your Majesty, for inviting me here today.” Wilhelm nodded several times exposing a broad grin. Carnegie’s carefully trimmed white beard glowed under a dozen closely placed incandescent lights. The audience saw a kindly, old man’s face that looked more like a favorite uncle that a millionaire. “I bring greetings and congratulations to His Majesty from the great metropolis of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania populated by a half-million German descendents.” His voice revealed a hint of Scottish burr. “The world’s greatest steel producing center lies between the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers that join to create the great Ohio River that opened the West to adventurous Americans.” “At the time Germany was unified in 1871, Pittsburgh was a village of 75,000 inhabitants. Today, it is a thriving metropolis, the fifth largest city in the United States. It was steel that created work for thousands of families. Steel provided them with schools, hospitals, fine roads and tall buildings.” “At the same time we learned that Berlin was on a parallel growth pattern. I believe that such growth is the result of peace throughout both lands. We can all agree that war is absent as economic growth brings full bellies and general happiness to the people.” The audience shouted, “Hoch! Hoch! Hoch!” “I want to share with you a secret I’ve kept for many years. I am not only an industrialist, I am a preacher.” The audience fell silent awaiting an explanation from the diminutive elder. “Yes, dear friends I am a preacher, but a very special type. I preach peace. I preach the peace that our Lord Jesus Christ desired for all mankind. As I turn and face his Majesty Wilhelm II, I see a man who also preaches peace for the world.” “When I first met the Emperor a decade ago, he told me that Europe is too small to be divided into so many small states. He said that he had long considered a plan for a federation of Europe. I asked him what such a scheme would accomplish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the 1960s ended, Herbie Hancock embarked on a grand creative experiment. Having just been dismissed from the celebrated Miles Davis Quintet, he set out on the road, playing with his first touring group as a leader until he eventually formed what would become a revolutionary band. Taking the Swahili name Mwandishi, the group would go on to play some of the most innovative music of the 1970s, fusing an assortment of musical genres, American and African cultures, and acoustic and electronic sounds into groundbreaking experiments that helped shape the American popular music that followed. In You’ll Know When You Get There, Bob Gluck offers the first comprehensive study of this influential group, mapping the musical, technological, political, and cultural changes that they not only lived in but also effected. Beginning with Hancock’s formative years as a sideman in bebop and hard bop ensembles, his work with Miles Davis, and the early recordings under his own name, Gluck uncovers the many ingredients that would come to form the Mwandishi sound. He offers an extensive series of interviews with Hancock and other band members, the producer and engineer who worked with them, and a catalog of well-known musicians who were profoundly influenced by the group. Paying close attention to the Mwandishi band’s repertoire, he analyzes a wide array of recordings—many little known—and examines the group’s instrumentation, their pioneering use of electronics, and their transformation of the studio into a compositional tool. From protofunk rhythms to synthesizers to the reclamation of African identities, Gluck tells the story of a highly peculiar and thrillingly unpredictable band that became a hallmark of American genius.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the cable TV industry exploded in the 1980s, offering viewers dozens of channels, an unprecedented number of series were produced. For every successful sitcom--The Golden Girls, Family Ties, Newhart--there were flops such as Take Five with George Segal, Annie McGuire with Mary Tyler Moore, One Big Family with Danny Thomas and Life with Lucy starring Lucille Ball, proving that a big name does not a hit show make. Other short-lived series were springboards for future stars, like Day by Day (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), The Duck Factory (Jim Carrey), Raising Miranda (Bryan Cranston) and Square Pegs (Sarah Jessica Parker). This book unearths many single-season sitcoms of the '80s, providing behind-the-scenes stories from cast members, guest stars, writers, producers and directors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping novel based on astonishing true events... In the summer of 1941, two young men from Chicago took off on a road trip to Mexico. From there, they traveled across the Pacific to Japan, and then on to occupied France, landing in that country on the very day that Germany declared war on the United States. Their epic adventure had suddenly taken a dark turn. Wolfgang Wergin and Herbie Haupt were American citizens, though German by birth. Both had lived in America since the age of five, yet now they were given a choice by German officials. They could join a Nazi sabotage mission heading to the United States aboard two submarines, to land on American shores and blow up aluminum factories, or they could be drafted into the German army and sent to the Russian front. One of these young men chose the first option, and one the second. Only one of them would survive. While this fragment of history is mostly forgotten today, the episode became one of the most sensational news stories of its time, garnering intense national interest. "Enemies: A War Story" is a fictionalized version of this true story, sticking as close to the facts as possible. This is a novel that raises challenging questions about the meanings of patriotism, justice, and American morality during difficult times.
