Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Culture: Yoruba provides teachers, educators and social workers with a quick introduction to Yoruba culture, from which the majority of Black African children in the UK derive. In recent years, high levels of migration have resulted in significantly larger proportions of children from this ethnic group in British schools, particularly those in larger cities. In some places this has represented a drastic change in demographics. Most schools quickly become aware that the differences between British and Yoruba culture have a significant bearing on their interaction with pupils and their families. These differences sometimes lead to conflict and difficulties in communication, which in turn impact pupils’ learning. This book serves as a bridge to help teachers understand these differences and empowers them to interact with the culture from an informed perspective. It covers the history of the Yoruba people, cultural norms and values, child rearing practices and how these differ from British culture. The book provides educators who are relatively new to the culture group with valuable insights into the psyche of Yoruba culture. It treats cultural conflict sympathetically and sheds some light on the struggles bi-cultural Yoruba children face. It highlights some day-to-day issues that teachers and educators may encounter

Book excerpt: Yoruba artists have long employed the visual arts to criticize dictatorial and ineffectual governments. This book examines satires of power in Yoruba visual culture from the precolonial to the postcolonial periods of Nigerian history. Prior to the imposition of British colonial rule between 1893 and 1960, there were manifestations of parodies of power in the Yoruba satirical masking as well as in the carvings of some of the leading artists of the era, including the renowned Olowe of Ise, who worked predominantly for many kings in southwestern Nigeria. By the 1940s, Yoruba artists began to use the Western modernist media of editorial cartooning and photography as tools of social and political commentary. This text explores the visual commentaries on colonialism by Akinola Lasekan and the critiques of postcolonial military and civilian leaderships conceived by prominent cartoonists such as Kenny Adamson, Josy Ajiboye, dele jegede, Bisi Ogunbadejo, Boye Gbenro, and Tayo Fatunla. And in the global arena, the book further explores the triad of identity, power, and parody in the postmodern photographs and installations of Rotimi Fani-Kayode and Yinka Shonibare, two London-based artists of Yoruba descent. While this book complements previous studies of satire among the Yoruba as an aspect of ritualized performance traditions, it departs from such studies by exploring its appropriations in secular spaces of contemporary visual culture. This book is part of the African World Series, edited by Toyin Falola, Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities, University of Texas at Austin. "In original, compelling arguments, Ola considers both direct and oblique influences that the Yoruba trickster deity Esu has had on specific works by each artist. Summing up: Recommended." -- CHOICE Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This masterful book investigates and analyzes several aspects of money among the Yoruba of Nigeria. Falola and Adebayo explore the origin, philosophy, uses, politics, and problems of acquiring and spending money in Yoruba culture. No prior book exists on this aspect of a major ethnic group in Africa with established connections with the black Diaspora in North America and the Caribbean. Conceived so that each chapter may be read individually, the volume is divided into three parts. Part 1, "Money and Its Uses," focuses on the transition from barter to cowry currency, the idealistic and pragmatic views of money, the impact of monetization on social stratification, accumulation among members of the elite, and the development of savings, banking, and credit institutions. Part 2, "Money and Its Problems," investigates the social, political, and cultural problems of money, including money-lending, theft, counterfeiting, and corruption. Part 3, "Money and Oil Economy," assesses the impact of the oil industry on the Nigerian state and examines both the positive and negative effects of oil money on Yoruba economy, society, and spending. Concluding chapters detail efforts to arrest the crisis that followed the economic slump after the oil boom and led to the adoption of the Structural Adjustment Program, and also evaluate the effects of currency devaluation on personal and communal responsibilities and social payment. Culture, Politics, and Money Among the Yoruba is timely in view of ongoing political and economic changes in Africa. It will be of interest to economists, sociologists, and African studies specialists. Toyin Falola, a leading historian of Nigeria and a distinguished Africanist, is professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin. His books include Decolonization and Development Planning and Violence in Nigeria. He is at the moment completing a study on the history of Nigeria. Akanmu Adebayo is a professor of history at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. His latest book is Embattled Federalism: A History of Revenue Allocation in Nigeria.
