Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of drawings and watercolours is devoted to my impressions of the majestic beauties or 'icons' of the continent, but also aims to present my observations about the 'small Australia' of ordinary buildings and landscape; the general stores, the post offices, the railway stations, the old hotels, the tea rooms, the corrugated iron sheds, the empty shops, the disused mines and the classical colonial town halls reminiscent of the old and far away Europe. I wanted to show places like Dimbullah and Norseman that are unknown to outsiders but are just as interesting in their own ways as Sydney Harbour and Uluru.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with a chapter on homeland memories, followed by the author’s and his wife’s first experiences in Australia in 1954. For the first decade they moved from place to place, finally settling down in Canberra. These adventures are expressed in chapters on Tasmania, Darwin, a 15month stay in Canberra, Grafton, and finally Canberra again. The family, now with five daughters, settled in the National Capital where Mr Feeken became permanently employed as a draftsman and cartographer with the Bureau of Mineral Resources (now Geoscience Australia). Being interested in Australian Exploration, the family travelled year after year, checking out explorers’ discoveries, culminating in the publication of The Discovery and Exploration of Australia in 1970. Afterwards, the family still travelled, year after year, the vast expanses of the Australian Continent, often checking out explorers’ routes. After the untimely death of Mrs Feeken in 2005, the author was encouraged by friends to write up this story. The fascination for travelling the outback continued into the next generation. In 2007, Mr Feeken travelled with his granddaughter Kiah around Australia and to the centre, covering nearly 30 000 km in 6 months.

Book excerpt: "My Experiences in Australia" is a historical novel by Emma MacPherson and her recollections of a visit to the Australian Colonies in 1856-7. She had accompanied her husband Allan MacPherson on a business trip to dispose of some of his properties there. She writes to encourage her readers to visit the country and states, "I am aware that these recollections of a fifteen months' residence in Australia do but little towards supplying the want referred to; still, if the perusal of these pages has the effect of checking the over-sanguine expectations of some of my lady readers, and of removing the over-timid apprehensions of others, I shall feel that this record of my own experience has not been without its use."

Book excerpt: Three years ago, Spiri Tsintziras found herself mentally, physically and spiritually depleted. She was stretched thin – raising kids, running a household and managing a business. She ate too much in order to keep going and then slumped in front of the telly at night, exhausted, asking herself ‘What is it all for?’ Spiri’s quest for a healthier, more nourishing life took her from her suburban home in Melbourne to her family’s homeland of Greece, and to the small Greek island of Ikaria. The people of Ikaria – part of the famous ‘Blue Zones’ – live happy, healthy and long lives. Inspired by their example, Spiri made some simple lifestyle changes and as a result lost weight, gained energy and deepened the connection to those closest to her. Best of all, she didn’t have to give up bread or wine! Spiri’s heartwarming memoir, which includes delicious family recipes, will console and entertain anyone bogged down in the daily grind – encouraging you to put your health and happiness first. ‘My Ikaria is a kindly wake-up call to live a more mindful, meaningful and generous life – a joy to read.’ —Alice Pung ‘I applaud Spiri for sharing her fascinating and insightful journey to better health through My Ikaria. As our lives become increasingly busy and fast-paced, we can all learn valuable lessons from the Ikarians, who show us it’s not about striving to live longer but to live better.’ —Jerril Rechter, VicHealth CEO ‘Tsintziras gives an engaging account of her Ikarian journey, practically and philosophically, saying “they’ve reached across the seas and inspired me to live better”. This charming memoir may inspire you to live better too.’ —SAWeekend

Book excerpt: Terror in Australia: Workers' Paradise Lost, by veteran journalist John Stapleton, is a beautifully written snapshot of a pivotal turning point in the history of the so-called Lucky Country. This book is a sidewinding missile into the heart of Australian hypocrisy. In 2015 there were well attended Reclaim Australia demonstrations in every major capital city, all protesting what the demonstrators saw as the growing Islamisation of Australia, along with countering anti-racism demonstrations. There were frequent violent clashes, hundreds of police were forced to form lines separating the demonstrators in Sydney and Melbourne, there were a significant number of arrests and injuries, and dozens of people were treated for the effects of capsicum spray. The terror alert was at its highest level ever, the country was engaged in an unpopular and discredited war in Iraq and Syria, and relations between the government and an increasingly radicalised Muslim minority had broken down. Despite the billions being spent on national security, authorities believed another terrorist attack was inevitable. A demoralised population, saddled with a history of grotesque overregulation, turned inwards, increasingly questioning the failed social creeds of the past. On the streets once vibrant entertainment districts were desolate, while closed and shuttered shops became a characteristic of many suburbs. An optimistic, freedom loving country with an irreverent, larrikin culture and a wildly optimistic view of its place in the world lost faith in its own story. Well documented, switching through multiple points of view, Terror in Australia: Workers' Paradise Lost is a sometimes frightening, sometimes intensely lyrical step inside a democracy in serious trouble.

Book excerpt: Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Brisbane, Australia, Belonging and Becoming in a Multicultural World provides a critical analysis of the shortcomings and underpinning contradictions of modern multicultural inclusion. It demonstrates how creating a sense of identity among young Sudanese and Karen refugees is a continual process shaped by powerful social forces.
