Book excerpt: Traditional models of development highlight the importance of separation and individuation processes and value autonomy and independence as developmental goals. In contrast, the Relational Theory of Development suggests that human development occurs through being engaged in mutually empathic relationships, and maturity is marked by the ability to engage in complex, growth promoting relationships. In this study, one hundred and eighty three college women and one hundred and ten college men explored the extent to which adolescents and young adults engage in mutually empathic relationships, with whom, and the association between such relationships and psychological outcomes. Participants completed measures of mutual empathy, depression, anxiety and self-esteem. Paired-samples t tests and one-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences in degree of mutual empathy with various relational partners, with women reporting higher mutual empathy in all relationships except with mother. Stepwise regressions indicated that for women, outcome measures were predicted by mutual empathy with mother and opposite sex friend or partner; for men, outcome measures were predicted by mutual empathy with father and same sex friend or partner. Results are consistent with the relational theory of development as applied to women, as well as with its application to adolescents and men. Clinical implications of these findings are considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is an area of concern for college students. College students have higher rates of depression than non-college peers. Additionally, depression is related to multiple risk-taking behaviors and lower performance in school. This study examined the relationships between gender, friendship support, self-esteem and depression ratings in a Midwestern college sample. Undergraduate psychology students completed multiple self-report inventories, including the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support; and they provided information about the number of days they were depressed or their mental health was not good in the previous month. An additional model was run examining the relationships between the aforementioned variables and the number of days reported with mental health not good. While research shows that all three variables can affect depression in a college student population, the present study found that gender interacted with these measures. On the one hand, increased friendship support seemed to buffer males but especially females from depression. On the other hand, increased self-esteem buffered males from depression more than it buffered females. The additional model showed that self-esteem seems to work across genders to buffer college students from the experience of poor mental health days. Perhaps, when looking to intervene in the lives of the students, universities would be able to tailor interventions based on gender, so that they are able to foster increased friendship support for females and increase self-esteem for males, thereby reducing depression's impact on students.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The present study examined the impact of self-esteem, the desire for lighter skin, and gender on levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among university students in Thailand. The study included 761 students from two universities in a northeastern province of Thailand who participated voluntarily. Results indicated that although the desire for lighter skin is prevalent among Thai university students, this desire alone does not significantly impact levels of depression, anxiety, or stress. Self-esteem was a significant predictor of depression, anxiety, and stress. School year showed a significant positive correlation with depression, anxiety, and stress. Academic performance as measured by GPA showed a significant positive correlation with self-esteem and a significant negative correlation with depression. Mental health professionals are advised to explore ways to improve Thai university students’ self-esteem and to examine the influence of academic and graduation-related pressures in order to positively impact students’ overall mental health. Additional implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines emerging trends in contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice, highlighting inter-subjective and relational models of the mind. The author presents vivid and extended clinical vignettes that demonstrate the analyst's use of the self in building clinical momentum and continued development. The author highlights the importance of mutuality and recognition in the development of the self, illustrating the impact of family, the larger group context, and the contribution of the analytic encounter. This book is divided into three sections: First, the contribution of family to development, including some relatively neglected topics, such as the importance of fathers in female development, the role of siblings, the experience of 'only' children or singletons in the family, and the impact of the extended family (including grandparents) upon the individual. A second section examines the influence of unconscious group processes upon individual development and functioning, and includes papers that highlight the contribution of group psychotherapy as a form of treatment.

Book excerpt: Previous principles of hierarchy, inequality, and duty that defined the relationships between husband, wife, and children have been challenged and often replaced by more fluid bonds of equality, intimacy, emotional self-disclosure, communication, and mutual trust. The key question that has emerged for our times, then, is how exactly do families sustain genuine mutuality, democracy, and strong relationships? Figuring out good answers to this question is the major theme of this book and the origin of the title Mutuality Matters.

Book excerpt: Previous research has focused on studying the risk factors associated with social anxiety, but few studies look into the key protective factors. This study intends to fill in the gaps in the current literature by examining whether high self-esteem and self-compassion are important protective factors associated with a reduction in social anxiety symptom severity. The current study hypothesizes that self-esteem and/or self-compassion are protective factors in mitigating the risk behavioral inhibition confers on social anxiety. 299 male and female undergraduate students are asked to complete online measures assessing their behavioral inhibition, self-esteem, self-compassion, and social anxiety levels. Correlational and regression analyses indicate that increased self-esteem and self-compassion are associated with decreased behavioral inhibition and social anxiety. However, behavioral inhibition remains a significant predictor of social anxiety even when controlling for high self-esteem and self-compassion. Although the results do not support self-esteem and self-compassion as moderators, future studies involving younger participants and utilizing a longitudinal design may yield more favorable results.
