Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DescriptionThis is a mainly autobiographical story of one 'Lewis Fergus', and how mental illness began affecting him from his early years, and principally when he began comprehensive school. He finds the adjustment from 'small school' to 'big school' all a bit too much and retreats into himself, turning from a once quiet but confident young lad and into a virtually mute and cripplingly shy boy. Various incidents occur along the way to re-enforce this way of thinking in Lewis, leaving him a 'wallflower' throughout his school years, rarely mixing and making as few waves in life's ocean as he possibly could. The shy and anxious Lewis Fergus story continues through college, through work, through several bouts of depression and just the simple things of everyday life, and suffering because of how he is, as he feels himself as little more than a observer of life, of others living and getting on and having fun, while he remains on the sidelines - a fun kind and gregarious person trapped in the body of a shy and anxious guy, unable to interact with others in the way he would like to. His fragile confidence and mental state has to contend with the loss of loved ones, anxieties and phobias developing and changing, and the frustrations at his own inability to communicate like he sees others do every day. It was a long winding and punishing road for Lewis to walk and to make the small breakthrough's that would help him to grow and get on as a person. It also includes his genuine thoughts and feelings on events and everyday anxieties and sadness from 2006 onwards, written at the time by Lewis and unaltered beyond spelling and grammar. About the AuthorPaul Smith was born and raised in South Yorkshire, now living in south-west Scotland, and he has suffered with cronic depression on and off for the past ten years, along with a mild form of ocd, and a couple of phobias for good measure. These have affected his life in many ways, from socialising and making friends, to struggling to do a job and even using a telephone. It has also affected his sleep to varing degrees and impeded his self esteem for many years. Paul feels this is a genetic affliction, as both his Mother and her Father, along with Paul's sister have suffered with depression. He has also had varied experiences and problems with medication, and three separate occasions of counselling sessions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “engrossing new biography” of the actor famed for his menacing onscreen persona—and his offscreen work for peace and civil rights (Film Quarterly). The Lives of Robert Ryan is an in-depth look at the gifted, complex, intensely private man Martin Scorsese called “one of the greatest actors in the history of American film.” The son of a Chicago construction executive with strong ties to the Democratic machine, Ryan became a star after World War II on the strength of his menacing performance as an anti-Semitic murderer in the film noir Crossfire. Over the next quarter century, he created a gallery of brooding, neurotic, and violent characters in such movies as Bad Day at Black Rock, Billy Budd, The Dirty Dozen, and The Wild Bunch. His riveting performances expose the darkest impulses of the American psyche during the Cold War. At the same time, Ryan’s marriage to a liberal Quaker and his own conscience launched him into a tireless career of peace and civil rights activism that stood in direct contrast to his screen persona. Drawing on unpublished writings and revealing interviews, film critic J.R. Jones deftly explores the many contradictory facets of Robert Ryan’s public and private lives, and how these lives intertwined in one of the most compelling actors of a generation. “Engaging . . . Jones describes a complex man who grappled publicly with the world’s demons and privately with his own, among them alcohol and depression.” —Associated Press “Jones has done a superb job . . . A masterly biography.” —Library Journal Includes photographs

The thoughts came to me in quiet hours, and I put them down in rhyme, partly for pastime, and partly to please my own fancy. The importunities of some of my intimate friends are responsible for their publication. The work makes no pretensions to literary merit. It is merely a collection of reminisences, anticipations, and my own ideals of personal character. The sentiments expressed are from my experiences and observations. If its perusal affords consolation, or lightens the burdens of sorrow, or inspires any one with higher aspirations or loftier purposes, I shall. Book excerpt: In 1945 U.S. Navy photographer Nick Scutti found himself in the Florida Keys on the set of the classic World War II drama They Were Expendable, taking candid shots of director John Ford, stars Robert Montgomery and John Wayne and the supporting cast and crew. Scutti's never before published collection of fully captioned photos provides a unique chronicle of the 30-day location shoot, revealing details of the making of the film and in some instances disproving certain statements made by MGM publicity and Ford himself. Brief biographies are included of the stars of the film and of the men the film was based upon.

Book excerpt: "The techniques are really a vessel for carrying all the things that are budo..." Most books about martial arts (budo) focus on techniques, although some tell the history, and a few wax philosophical. It is rare indeed to discover a book that so fluently combines all this within the broader context of culture and lifestyle, and does so in such a humble, engaging, and accessible way. "Budo Bum Anthology" is a book that answers not so much "how" or "what" as it does "why?" Why call budo teachers "sensei"? Why do we bow? Why kata? Why keep training? Peter Boylan, aka the Budo Bum, has achieved high rank in several martial arts -- judo, iaido, jodo, and more--spending decades immersed within budo, straddling the worlds and cultures of Japan and America, and translating between them. In these essays, the reader is invited to walk alongside a quiet man who thinks deeply about the worlds in which budo was created and is practiced, and who brings the meaning of "all the things that are budo" into our daily lives. CONTENTS Introduction Getting Started Do you have to study in Japan to understand budo? Etiquette: Form and sincerity in budo Sensei, Kyoshi, Hanshi, and Shihan: budo titles and how (not) to use them Different ranks in martial arts? Zanshin Budo Do versus Jutsu ( ) What kata isn't Trust in the dojo Training Training, motivation, and counting training time in decades instead of years The most effective martial art The dojo as the world: learning to deal with violence and power Budo and responsibility Investing in failure The spirit of learning Training hard and training well are not the same thing When it comes to training, fast is slow and slow is fast Getting out of the comfort zone There are no advanced techniques Essentials The most essential principles in budo: Structure The most essential principles in budo: Spacing The most essential principles in budo: Timing Philosophy The only things I teach are how to walk and how to breathe Budo expectations and realities: understanding the limits of what we study Will budo training make me a better person? Budo as a "professional skill" and professionalism in budo Budo training and budo philosophy How to adapt an art form to fit you Is kata too rigid and mechanical?

Book excerpt: A repackaged edition of the revered author’s definitive collection of short fiction, which explores enduring spiritual and science fiction themes such as space, time, reality, fantasy, God, and the fate of humankind. From C.S. Lewis—the great British writer, scholar, lay theologian, broadcaster, Christian apologist, and author of Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Chronicles of Narnia, and many other beloved classics—comes a collection of his dazzling short fiction. This collection of futuristic fiction includes a breathtaking science fiction story written early in his career in which Cambridge intellectuals witness the breach of space-time through a chronoscope—a telescope that looks not just into another world, but into another time. As powerful, inventive, and profound as his theological and philosophical works, The Dark Tower reveals another side of Lewis’s creative mind and his longtime fascination with reality and spirituality. It is ideal reading for fans of J. R. R. Tolkien, Lewis’s longtime friend and colleague.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quiet Man deals with a lot of today's contemporary issues including, divorce, extramarital relationships, impact of divorce on a family, single parenting, depression, overcoming a major disability, romance, conspiracy, intrigue, being screwed by corporate America, losing the love of your life, trials of being a parent, and financial hardship. The Quiet Man is based on a true story, so a majority of the people can relate to these things, will develop an interest in the story, almost living part of the story, saying, "Been there, done that." The Quiet Man not only tells about all the experiences but provides a recipe for a better life to correct the past errors and make America a gentler place to live. The Quiet Man also explores why society is out of control, how today's problems are not running as rapidly one generation ago. ***** The book went through an evolution process; at the time I started to write the book, it was a way to win back my children that I thought I lost because of depression and divorce, then it turned into a beautiful love story to win back the love of my life, then in a turning point, it took a more spiritual journey, and it seemed like God had taken over writing the book, with a recipe of the future ideal society and getting back to the basics. Since the story is a beautiful love story, many people will be lured into picking up the book to read an interesting novel; it takes place in numerous locations, but my fond memories are the ones of the East Coast of Connecticut and Rhode Island. I think there are so many people out there looking for answers, and The Quiet Man helps provide a number of the answers to making America a better place to live. I believe a lot of our problems in today's society are relationship issues, and if we can build a strong family nucleus, then we can solve a lot of society's future problems.
