Book excerpt: Heal Thyself is the paperback edition of The End of My Addiction—a memoir of Ameisen's struggle and a call to action. "[This book is] the story of the dazzling discovery of a cure that could soon be within reach of all . . . you must read this book." —David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PHD, author of Healing Without Freud or Prozac and Anticancer When Olivier Ameisen's book was first published, Barbara Fisher noted in The Boston Globe that "this is not your usual memoir of addiction, degradation, and redemption." His story is indeed unusual—not because he was a brilliant cardiologist who developed a profound addiction to alcohol, or because he tried numerous treatment options and none helped. His story was the story of millions of alcoholics—until he decided to take his treatment into his own hands. Searching for a cure for his deadly disease, he happened upon baclofen, a safe muscle relaxant that had recently shown promising results in studies with laboratory animals addicted to a wide variety of substances. Ameisen experimented with increasingly higher dosages until he reached a level that left him free of any craving for alcohol. That was more than six years ago. In the past year, a growing number of researchers and doctors have been inspired by Ameisen and begun prescribing baclofen and lobbying for wide-scale studies into how the drug works. Last spring, no less an authority than the leading medical journal Alcoholand Alcoholism endorsed the book. Hailing Dr. Ameisen as "a remarkable medical researcher," it summed up its assessment strongly and directly: "This book is to be recommended."

Within minutes they found out Stan was partially right. It wasn't a tire, but a muddy, seaweed-laden bag of some sort. Stan got the grappling hook and they pulled it up into the boat. It was an old backpack, and it was a mess. Dinkel Island artist Stan Grayson struggles with lingering grief after his wife's untimely death. While fishing, he and his friend Ed Heygood find a water-logged backpack containing a large amount of money. This stirs reactions in town. An investigation uncovers an abduction that happened twenty-two years earlier and has implications for Kate Sheppard, pastor of the Dinkel Island Wesleyan Brethren Church. An explosion and robbery bring added stress. A visiting gospel music group provides a key to unlock the mysteries of both the abduction and the money. Ultimately, faith and mutual support open doors to the resolution of grief and a return of bliss for Stan, Ed, Kate and others. Return of Bliss is a story of unfolding hope and joy built around Psalm 30:5, 'Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Veatch is one of the most distinguished American bioethicists, having in many ways helped to create that field. His new book is on a theme he has developed for thirty years: his view that a fundamental and radical change is sweeping through the American health care system but has so far received relatively little attention. This change is so fundamental and far-reaching that Veatch claims we are in the early stages of a 'new medicine' that will replace what we think of as modern medical practice. The change is in how we think about medical decision-making. Whereas modern medicine's core idea was that medical decisions should be based on the cold, hard facts of science -- the province of the doctor -- the 'new medicine' reflects the notion that medical decisions impose value judgments. Since physicians can claim no expertise on making those value judgments, the pendulum has swung greatly toward the patient in evaluating alternatives and making decisions about their treatment. While the doctor's expertise is consulted, the patient is in control. In short, doctor no longer knows best. Veatch shows how this is only true for value-loaded interventions (abortion, euthanasia, genetics) but coming to be true for almost every routine procedure in medicine -- everything from setting broken arms, to choosing drugs for cholesterol or osteoporosis. Veatch uses a range of fascinating contemporary and historical examples to reveal how values underly almost all medical procedures, and illustrate his case that this change is inevitable and a positive trend for patients.

Book excerpt: A witty, candid, sharply written memoir by the cofounder of Steely Dan In his entertaining debut as an author, Donald Fagen—musician, songwriter, and cofounder of Steely Dan—reveals the cultural figures and currents that shaped his artistic sensibility, as well as offering a look at his college days and a hilarious account of life on the road. Fagen presents the “eminent hipsters” who spoke to him as he was growing up in a bland New Jersey suburb in the early 1960s; his colorful, mind-expanding years at Bard College, where he first met his musical partner Walter Becker; and the agonies and ecstasies of a recent cross-country tour with Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. Acclaimed for his literate lyrics and complex arrangements as a musician, Fagen here proves himself a sophisticated writer with his own distinctive voice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990, American television experienced a seismic shift when Twin Peaks premiered, eschewing formulaic plots and clear lines between heroes and villains. This game-changing series inspired a generation of show creators to experiment artistically, transforming the small screen in ways that endure to this day. Focusing on six shows (Twin Peaks, with a critical analysis of both the original series and the 2017 return; The Wire; Treme; The Sopranos; Mad Men; and Girls), Television Rewired explores what made these programs so extraordinary. As their writers and producers fought against canned plots and moral simplicity, they participated in the evolution of the exhilarating new auteur television while underscoring the fact that art and entertainment don't have to be mutually exclusive. Nochimson also makes provocative distinctions between true auteur television and shows that were inspired by the freedom of the auteur series but nonetheless remained entrenched within the parameters of formula. Providing opportunities for vigorous discussion, Television Rewired will stimulate debates about which of the new television series since 1990 constitute “art” and which are tweaked “business-driven storytelling.”

You are a child. You are dyslexic, borderline autistic, contemptuous of authority in any form, and asocial. Life is a cruel reality made by others, and a surreal fantasy made by you. Do you ever learn to tell the difference?Do you conquer, or be conquered by, loss, envy, hatred, prejudice, cruelty, violence, apathy, and greed? This is a story about love, sensuality, sexuality, spirituality, innocence, caring and empathy. This is a story about someone growing and trying to transcend his surroundings, and comprehend a priori concepts such as truth and beauty. This novel is in the "Unreliable Narrative" genre of literature, and is a unique blend of classic literary styles ubiquitously meshed with modern pop culture, and a playfully irreverent handling of the modern English language.
