Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can music really arouse emotions? If so, what emotions, and how? Why do listeners respond with different emotions to the same piece of music? Are emotions to music different from other emotions? Why do we respond to fictional events in art as if they were real, even though we know they're not? What is it that makes a performance of music emotionally expressive? Based on ground-breaking research, Musical Emotions Explained explores how music expresses and arouses emotions, and how it becomes an object of aesthetic judgments. Within the book, Juslin demonstrates how psychological mechanisms from our ancient past engage with meanings in music at multiple levels of the brain to evoke a broad variety of affective states - from startle responses to profound aesthetic emotions, and explores why these mechanisms respond to music? Written by one of the leading researchers in the field, the book is richly illustrated with music examples from everyday life, and explains with clarity and rigour the manifold ways in which music may engage our emotions, in a style sufficiently engaging for lay readers, yet comprehensive and novel enough for specialists.

Book excerpt: In this introduction to natural-base music theory, Ernst Levy presents the essentials of a comprehensive, consistent theory of harmony developed from tone structure. A Theory of Harmony is a highly original explanation of the harmonic language of the last few centuries, showing the way toward an understanding of diverse styles of music. Basic harmony texts exist, but none supply help to students seeking threads of logic in the field. In a text abundantly illustrated with musical examples, Levy makes clear the few principles that illuminate the natural forces in harmony. He shows that general principles can be successfully extracted from the wealth of examples. This book actually provides a theory of harmony. One of the major musical minds of the twentieth century, Ernst Levy was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1895. His musical career spanned more than seven decades, from his first public piano performance at age six. A naturalized U.S. citizen, he lived here from 1941 to 1966, teaching at the New England Conservatory, the University of Chicago, Bennington College, the Massachusetts institute of Technology, and Brooklyn College. After his retirement, Levy returned to Switzerland where he continued to compose until his death in 1981. He was an enormously productive composer, with hundreds of works to his credit including symphonies, string quartets, songs in English, French, and German, and music for solo instruments and small ensembles. His piano recordings, particularly of the last Beethoven sonatas and the Liszt sonata, have become collectors' items. He thought of himself as a successor to Reimann, immediately, and Rameau, more remotely.

Book excerpt: The producer's guide to harmony, chord progressions, and song structure in the MIDI grid. As an online class, Dr. Allen has had over 50,000 students use this ground-breaking curriculum to learn music theory. Students and Producers who have wanted to learn music theory to improve their own music, but have been intimidated by traditional approaches, music notation, and abstract concepts will find this book to be the answer they have been looking for. From the Author: "How music theory is usually taught is unfair. It starts with the assumption that you can read music and understand the language of classical music. My book leaves all of that behind - focusing only on the MIDI grid that producers are already familiar with to learn all the key concepts of music theory, and ultimately, make better music." This book covers all the fundamentals of music theory, but is written using the language of the DJ and Producer - the MIDI Grid. It includes "analysis" projects that look at the harmonic and melodic ideas in songs by popular producers including Zedd, Boards of Canada, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Bonobo, Richie Hawtin, Moby, Skrillex, and Aphex Twin. Praise for Music Theory for Electronic Music Producers: "Aspiring electronic musicians have choices to make when it concerns their own education and training. This text makes one choice much easier: start here and get learning, quickly. Grounded and easygoing, the book uses real-world examples to help you make sense of music's inner worksings while steering clear of dense theories." - Michael J. Ethen, PhD Musicologist "This book knocks the oftentimes alienating world of music theory completely onto it's side. Difficult to explain concepts are perfectly demonstrated for the aspiring electronic music producer who might have no formal music training. A must have for all aspiring producers." - James Patrick (DJ, Producer, Educator) Slam Academy, Dubspot, IPR, Ableton Certified Trainer "With Music Theory for Electronic Music Producers, Dr. Allen has produced a remarkable resource: an extensive tour of musical theory that leverages some of our favorite modern tools - the virtual studio and it's piano roll note display. By introducing us to the "why" as well as the "what" of music theory, this book helps us to understand what makes music tick and how to improve our own work. In addition to offering a sound theoretical foundation, the deep dives into analyzing tracks by Skrillex, Aphex Twin, and Deadmau5 keeps our attention focused on real-world production. MTEMP will definitely go on the top of my recommendation list for anyone that needs a fresh view of musical concepts." - Darwin Grosse Director of Education, Cycling '74

Book excerpt: "A fascinating and genuinely accessible guide....Educating, enjoyable, and delightfully unscary."—Classical Music What if Bach and Mozart heard richer, more dramatic chords than we hear in music today? What sonorities and moods have we lost in playing music in "equal temperament"—the equal division of the octave into twelve notes that has become our standard tuning method? Thanks to How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony, "we may soon be able to hear for ourselves what Beethoven really meant when he called B minor 'black'" (Wall Street Journal). In this "comprehensive plea for more variety in tuning methods" (Kirkus Reviews), Ross W. Duffin presents "a serious and well-argued case" (Goldberg Magazine) that "should make any contemporary musician think differently about tuning" (Saturday Guardian). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hacking the CAGED System: Diatonic Harmony is both a stand-alone ingenious system that teaches you to construct all the components of any key signature on the guitar fretboard, as well as following on nicely from Hacking the CAGED System – Book 1. This book will provide you with the tools to improvise freely within any key using a variety of devices such as modes, pentatonic scales, triads, chord tones, and arpeggios, chord synonyms, arpeggios, AND come up with your own diverse chord progressions using chord synonyms and all the chords in the key. Please note: it is not a prerequisite to have worked through Hacking the CAGED System – Book 1. You’ll also be able to create modal chord progressions that can be as simple or as complex as you like, as you’ll have access the full range of chords you can find in any key signature. Mapping out key signatures on the guitar fretboard is one of the best (and underused) ways to really learn the neck, play with confidence, and sound exactly like you know what you’re doing in any musical situation. Key signatures keep everything in context and prevent you from learning random bits of information that you can’t really use or that don’t add much to your playing. This book will tie your knowledge together and enable you to understand what chords work well together, as well as how to solo over them using a variety of devices such as triads, arpeggios, pentatonic scales, and modes, among others. I’m sure you’ve been there; you come up with a chord progression, riff or the beginning of a piece of music, but you don’t know what chords work with it, where to go next, or even how to solo over it. This book will put all those options right at your fingertips, leaving you free to do some of your best playing and writing yet.

Although this book's primary focus is on four-note chord voicings on the middle strings of the guitar, much of the knowledge conveyed here can be appreciated and used by all jazz musicians, not only guitarists. Topics covered include: Tensions, Voice Leading Chord Scales, Enharmonic Chordal Substitutions, Fourth Voicings, Chromatic Guide Lines, Triad Over Bass Voicings, and much more! The best part of this book, however, is the unique and practical way the author takes modern harmonic concepts and shows you how to apply them in real music situations! Written for the intermediate to advanced music theory enthusiast who wishes to master this facet of music."
