Tiny wisps of vapor cradled in winds from far distant seas, or wafted up from the lowlands beneath, are here swept into cloud masses which swirl about the treeless summits, fill the crevices, or change at the touch of the wind into flakes of snow. At first, these flakes are dry and powdery, drift about and fall upon the upper heights. They fill the hollows which are sheltered from the strong winds and if the mountain is extremely high, as in Alaska or Switzerland, the snow may accumulate until its own weight is such as to cause it to creep slowly out of its hollow.
