Book excerpt: Presenting a history of slavery that resonates with multiple audiences and serves necessary educational goals, while still creating sufficient appeal to attract visitors and remain sustainable is an enormous task faced by museums in post-colonial spaces across the world. The Museum Kura Hulanda in Curaçao finds itself in an unenviable position of maintaining a vast collection compiled by its founder, navigating the complexities of the 400-year legacy of Dutch involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, and sustaining its position within the local business and tourist economy of Curaçao. Focusing on the exhibitions at the Museum Kura Hulanda as a site of analysis, this research explores how African and Dutch heritage are presented in a specific museum in the Dutch Caribbean; in particular, how these heritages intersect – or not - in the Museum's presentation and interpretation of the transatlantic slave trade. Viewing the Museum's exhibits through the lens of the authorized heritage discourse and conceptualizations of erasure and silences, and using Cubitt's (2011) discussion of "atrocity materials" as a tool of analysis, this exploratory and interpretive qualitative case study critically assesses the modes of presentation in the Museum; the impact and potential impact of the Museum's displays on its visitors in view of historical and contemporary issues of race and racism in the Kingdom of the Netherlands; and the absence of local stories in favor of a more global approach to the Museum's displays. The analysis concludes with a recommendation for further research into the utilization of community engagement as a strategy for rethinking exhibit space, displays, and narratives to potentially provide a space for local people to engage with and relate the stories of Afro-Curaçaoans.

The recent emergence of the memory of slavery allows those who are or who claim to be descendents of slaves to legitimize their demand for recognition and for reparations for past wrongs. Some reparation claims encompass financial compensation, but very often they express the need for memorialization through public commemoration, museums, and monuments. In some contexts, presentification of the slave past has helped governments and the descendants of former masters and slave merchants to formulate public apologies. For some, expressing repentance is not only a means to erase guilt but also a way to gain political prestige. The authors analyse different aspects of the recent phenomenon of memorializing slavery, especially the practices employed to stage the slave past in both public and private spaces. The essays present memory and oblivion as part of the same process; they discuss reconstructions of the past in the present at different public and private levels through historiography, photography, exhibitions, monuments, memorials, collective and individual discourses, cyberspace, religion and performance. By offering a comparative perspective on the United States and West Africa, as well as on Western Europe, South America, and the Caribbean, the chapters offer new possibilities to explore the resurgence of the memory of slavery as a transnational movement in our contemporary world.

For example, the Dutch in the seventeenth century brought Calvinism to South Africa and entrepreneurialism to New Amsterdam and Cura_ao and in the nineteenth century supported slave plantation systems in Indonesia and Suriname, but as time passed the evolution of the colonies was telling. The United States outgrew Great Britain in wealth and power, but while Calvinism declined in the Netherlands it remained vibrant and progressive in the American Midwest. In many ways, the former colonies adapted to modernization better than the mother country. The Dutch Diaspora is an insightful and accessible study of colonialism useful to upper-level undergraduates and all students and researchers of Dutch history.
