Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1997. North American Women Artists of the Twentieth Century: A Biographical Dictionary was created to fill a gap of there being a comprehensive reference work like this available, even though the bibliography in English on various aspects of the history of women artists has grown exponentially during the past ten years. As researchers, the editors have been frustrated many times by being unable to locate basic information about many of the artists included in this volume—especially those working outside the United States. This leads directly to another reason for producing this particular kind of reference book—to try and create a better understanding between and among the artists and art audiences in these countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexican Transpacific considers the influence of a Japanese ethnic background or lack thereof in the cultural production of several twentieth- and twenty-first-century Mexican authors, performers, and visual artists. Despite Japanese Mexicans’ unquestionable influence on Mexico’s history and culture and the historical studies recently published on this Nikkei community, the study of its cultural production and therefore its self-definition has been, for the most part, overlooked. This book, a continuation of author Ignacio López-Calvo’s previous research on cultural production by Latin American authors of Asian ancestry, focuses mostly on literature, theater, and visual arts produced by Japanese immigrants in Mexico and their descendants, rather than on the Japanese community as a mere object of study. With this interdisciplinary project, López-Calvo aims to bring to the fore this silenced community’s voice and agency to historicize its own experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1959, the very year the Cuban Revolution amplified Cold War tensions in the Americas, museumgoers in the United States witnessed a sudden surge in major exhibitions of Latin American art. Surveying the 1960s boom of such exhibits, this book documents how art produced in regions considered susceptible to communist influence was staged on U.S. soil for U.S. audiences. Held in high-profile venues such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Walker Art Center, MoMA, and the Art Institute of Chicago, the exhibitions of the 1960s Latin American art boom did not define a single stylistic trend or the art of a single nation but rather attempted to frame Latin America as a unified whole for U.S. audiences. Delia Solomons calls attention to disruptive artworks that rebelled against the curatorial frames purporting to hold them and reveals these exhibitions to be complex contact zones in which competing voices collided. Ultimately, through multiple means—including choosing to exclude artworks with readily decipherable political messages and evading references to contemporary inter-American frictions—the U.S. curators who organized these shows crafted projections of Pan-American partnership and harmony, with the United States as leader, interpreter, and good neighbor, during an era of brutal U.S. interference across the Americas. Theoretically sophisticated and highly original, this survey of Cold War–era Latin American art exhibits sheds light on the midcentury history of major U.S. art museums and makes an important contribution to the fields of museum studies, art history, and Latin American modernist art.

Book excerpt: The man Octavio Paz called a "glacial spark" was a painter for whom intuition always had the last word. But Gunther Gerzso's work has in recent years lacked the in-depth attention it deserves, a situation meant to be righted by Risking the Abstract. Originally conceived in collaboration with the artist, and finished with the help of his widow and sons, this volume and exhibition provide a better understanding of the artist's essential role in shaping an alternative approach to Modernism in Mexico, one that bears an important relationship to Abstract Expressionism in the United States and art informel in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a fascinating story of 220 pages, through a selection of more than 300 images from 65 archives in America, Europe and Asia; the Mexican Football Federation and Cooperativa La Joplin celebrate, in an unprecedented and playful way, one of the great contributions of Mexico to all humanity: the ball. The first half of the book covers the remote origin of this claim, the symbolism and myth, the culture and art in Mesoamerica to answer all of the questions that may arise for those familiar and unfamiliar with the subject. The second part responds to the immediate question: what about the other balls? These are mainly in Asia and Europe. And the third narrates the evolution of the most popular ball of humanity: the football. And amidst all of this there is a convergence of childhood, math, humor, presidents and passion… Through an investigation of two years, this book celebrates one of the most influential objects in the culture of man, and of course, one of the greatest Mexican legacies. And beyond a history that provides much pride, it entails an ancient sense of joy and fun. Endearing brotherhood: culture and sport.
