Book excerpt: The musculoskeletal system is an organ system which facilitates movement and provides support, form and stability to the body. It is comprised of the bones of the skeleton, muscles, tendons, cartilage, ligaments, joints and other connective tissue that bind tissues and organs together. The disorders of the musculoskeletal system encompass motion discrepancies or functional disorders. As several other body systems such as the nervous, vascular and integumentary systems are correlated with the musculoskeletal system, disorders within these systems also affect the musculoskeletal system. Articular disorders are the most common musculoskeletal disorder. The disorders of the muscles of a different body system can cause respiratory dysfunction, bladder malfunction and impairment of ocular motion. Muscular dysfunctions, such as paresis, ataxia or paralysis can arise due to infections or toxin exposure. The level of impairment caused by these disorders depends on the condition and its severity. The musculoskeletal system can also be injured due to acute traumatic events, repeated exposure to awkward posture, force or vibration. This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Some of the diverse topics covered in this book address the assessment and management of musculoskeletal disorders and trauma. For all those who are interested in orthopedics, this book can prove to be an essential guide.

Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide disability benefits: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSDI provides disability benefits to people (under the full retirement age) who are no longer able to work because of a disabling medical condition. SSI provides income assistance for disabled, blind, and aged people who have limited income and resources regardless of their prior participation in the labor force. Both programs share a common disability determination process administered by SSA and state agencies as well as a common definition of disability for adults: "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Disabled workers might receive either SSDI benefits or SSI payments, or both, depending on their recent work history and current income and assets. Disabled workers might also receive benefits from other public programs such as workers' compensation, which insures against work-related illness or injuries occurring on the job, but those other programs have their own definitions and eligibility criteria. Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment identifies and defines the professionally accepted, standard measurements of outcomes improvement for medical conditions. This report also identifies specific, long-lasting medical conditions for adults in the categories of mental health disorders, cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Specifically, these conditions are disabling for a length of time, but typically don't result in permanently disabling limitations; are responsive to treatment; and after a specific length of time of treatment, improve to the point at which the conditions are no longer disabling.

Book excerpt: Musculoskeletal Injuries and Conditions: Assessment and Management is a practical guide to diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions in clinical practice. More comprehensive than a handbook, yet more clinically-focused than a desk reference, this volume is a one-stop guide for clinicians who deal with musculoskeletal disorders and injuries in the practice setting. The book is organized by anatomic region, from neck to toe, and written in outline format. Each chapter concisely presents the basic knowledge that every practitioner needs to have at the ready in the outpatient clinical context. Taking a uniform approach based on isolating symptoms and the location of the pain, the book presents a uniquely practical template for non-operative management of a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal problems. All chapters include epidemiology, anatomy, biomechanics, physical examination, diagnostic studies, and treatment. Flowcharts for differential diagnosis and initial management are provided for chief complaints. Helpful tables, lists, and over 150 anatomic illustrations supplement the text throughout. Given the increasing importance of ultrasound in clinical decision-making at the point of care, a mini-atlas of normal and abnormal findings for common injuries is presented as part of the imaging work-up. Designed to help busy practitioners diagnose and treat musculoskeletal disorders in the clinic or office, this book is an essential resource for physicians in rehabilitation and sports medicine, primary care, orthopedics, and other healthcare professionals who work in outpatient settings. Key Features: Provides a consistent approach to managing common musculoskeletal conditions based on location of pain Bulleted format and clear heading structure make it easy to find information More than 30 flowcharts map out differential diagnosis, diagnostic approach, and initial management strategy for each complaint Packed with useful tables, lists, and over 150 illustrations of surface anatomy Integrates musculoskeletal ultrasound into the imaging workup, with over 40 normal and abnormal scans to aid in recognizing signature pathologies at the point of care Purchase includes free access to the fully-searchable downloadable e-book with image bank

Book excerpt: Every year workers' low-back, hand, and arm problems lead to time away from jobs and reduce the nation's economic productivity. The connection of these problems to workplace activities-from carrying boxes to lifting patients to pounding computer keyboards-is the subject of major disagreements among workers, employers, advocacy groups, and researchers. Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace examines the scientific basis for connecting musculoskeletal disorders with the workplace, considering people, job tasks, and work environments. A multidisciplinary panel draws conclusions about the likelihood of causal links and the effectiveness of various intervention strategies. The panel also offers recommendations for what actions can be considered on the basis of current information and for closing information gaps. This book presents the latest information on the prevalence, incidence, and costs of musculoskeletal disorders and identifies factors that influence injury reporting. It reviews the broad scope of evidence: epidemiological studies of physical and psychosocial variables, basic biology, biomechanics, and physical and behavioral responses to stress. Given the magnitude of the problem-approximately 1 million people miss some work each year-and the current trends in workplace practices, this volume will be a must for advocates for workplace health, policy makers, employers, employees, medical professionals, engineers, lawyers, and labor officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of Musculoskeletal Injuries, Fourth Edition With Web Resource, guides current and future athletic trainers and rehabilitation professionals through the examination and evaluation of musculoskeletal injuries both on and off the field. The text presents injury examination strategies in on-site, acute, and clinical settings and provides the information on mastering the skills needed for the Board of Certification examination for athletic trainers as determined by the sixth edition of Athletic Training Role Delineation Study/Practice Analysis for entry-level athletic trainers. This updated fourth edition contains foundational information on a wide spectrum of injuries and the appropriate tests for examining and diagnosing them. Readers will learn to obtain an accurate injury history from the patient, inspect the injury and related areas, test motion control, palpate both bone and soft tissues, and examine function in order to gauge the player’s readiness to return to play. The fourth edition also includes the following enhancements: • A new online video library contains more than 51 short video clips that correspond to and demonstrate evaluation techniques for various musculoskeletal disorders found throughout the text. • Full-color photos and medical artwork have been added throughout the text to clarify testing techniques and enhance knowledge of relevant body structures. • Substantial updates provide the most recent evidence-based clinical information. • An expanded selection of special tests and injury-specific examinations are now presented in a more accessible format and include a photo or video, description of the purpose, patient and clinician positions for the test, procedures performed, and possible outcomes. The content of Examination of Musculoskeletal Injuries, Fourth Edition With Web Resource, has been restructured and focused to provide applicable information in a straightforward manner. Part I is aimed at entry-level students and presents general and introductory skills for each component of injury examination, including basic terminology and a breakdown of the examination procedure. Each component is then explored in depth along with general purposes and techniques. Part I ends by incorporating the various components into a systematic strategy for examination based on severity of injury and environment. Part II then applies the principles learned in the previous chapters to the recognition and examination of injuries organized by specific regions of the body. Each chapter includes strategies for examination immediately after an injury as well as examinations seen later in a clinical setting. To assist student comprehension and knowledge retention, key terms are in boldface throughout the text and are defined in the glossary. Symbols throughout the text alert students to essential procedures and highlight important information. The web resource houses printable tables of special tests, examination checklists and forms that students can use in laboratory work and review sessions, and a robust video library. To aid instructors, the text includes a suite of ancillary materials featuring a test package, instructor guide, and presentation package plus image bank. Examination of Musculoskeletal Injuries, Fourth Edition With Web Resource, is an essential resource for students of athletic training and therapy as well as current practitioners in the field who wish to use evidence-based procedures in their clinical practice to ensure safe and accurate diagnoses of injuries.

Book excerpt: The system of the human body, which provides humans with the ability to move using their muscular and skeletal systems, is known as human musculoskeletal system. It provides movement, support, form, and stability to the body. Pain, injuries and disorders related to this system are called musculoskeletal disorders. Enthesopathy, Achard syndrome, joint effusion, lumbar disc disease, Sever's disease, Zenker's paralysis and winged scapula are some of the common examples of musculoskeletal disorders. The assessment of musculoskeletal disorders follows a physical examination and a review of symptoms and pain, medical history, intensity of pain, as well as an examination of recreational and occupational hazards. Various diagnostic tests such as X-ray and MRI also help specialists in establishing a diagnosis. The treatment of musculoskeletal pain is often addressed through a prescription of anesthetic and anti-inflammatory drugs, targeted exercises, physical therapy and occupational therapy, chiropractic care, acupressure and acupuncture, etc. This book explores all the important aspects of musculoskeletal disorders in the present day scenario. It strives to provide a fair idea about this subject and to help develop a better understanding of the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of various musculoskeletal disorders. With state-of-the-art inputs by acclaimed medical experts, this book targets students and professionals.
